Does the below question make sense to any of you?

Who wants to be a millionaire question

Instead of highest it should say most. It’s badly written.

cakeorwine · 25/09/2022 09:05

I saw it and struggled to understand the question. I wonder if it had to be explained but we didn't see that.

It was really badly worded

CatherinedeBourgh · 24/09/2022 23:49

If you listed all the EU countries in english (i.e. Spain, Greece, Germany, Ireland, etc.) what would be the most common initial?

That's a clearer question.

(except no mentioning countries Grin

DawkinsOldSpot · 25/09/2022 09:39

I get it but took a few attempts to

SpinningAlwaysSadly · 25/09/2022 09:45

Mouseaboutthehouse · 24/09/2022 23:55

What is it people aren't understanding?

The words.

Everything. All of it.

I’ve had coffee as well.

cakeorwine · 25/09/2022 09:54

They didn't want to phone a friend as she and Jeremy felt it was a complex question for 30 seconds

HebeSunshine · 25/09/2022 10:05

Very clear question. Obvious answer.

Give over. It’s a ridiculously worded question and it’s not even the ‘common English name’ bit that’s confusing, it’s all of it.

Novum · 25/09/2022 10:15

ShyPussyCat · 24/09/2022 23:49

Or 'the most EU states' would perhaps be clearer.

Doesn't help and I would waste time cringing at the grammar.

cakeorwine · 25/09/2022 10:19

Put the EU states into alphabetical order using their English name. What is the most common initial (or starting letter)

(Just like they do at the fastest finger first question)

Hyacinth2 · 25/09/2022 10:21

Which letter starts the name of the majority of EU countries in their language.

cakeorwine · 25/09/2022 10:22

What is the commonest starting letter of EU states, when you use their English spelling?

Or

What is the most common starting letter of EU states, when you use their English spelling?

Anoisagusaris · 25/09/2022 10:22

‘Which letter starts’ sounds wrong to me.

Hyacinth2 · 25/09/2022 10:22

sorry - in English not 'their language'

cakeorwine · 25/09/2022 10:23

Hyacinth2 · 25/09/2022 10:21

Which letter starts the name of the majority of EU countries in their language.

Their language?

Now that's a question.

cinnabongene · 25/09/2022 10:27

Terribly worded but I understood what they meant

newnamethanks · 25/09/2022 10:29

That is extremely ill-phrased. I don't watch this programme, is it designed to confuse?

SleepingAgent · 25/09/2022 10:34

ARoyalSubject · 25/09/2022 08:57

Part of my job is writing / editing publications which need to be in very clear, easy to understand English.

I would not have understood that question, at first glance.

I would rewrite it as:

"Thinking about their names in English, which initial letter starts the largest number of EU member states?"

Is that any clearer?

Excellent way of phrasing it!

WWTBAM needs some new proof readers.

bigbeautifulmonster · 25/09/2022 10:39

Ladyof2022 · 24/09/2022 23:47

It should be "largest" number not highest.

This!
I too read it at first as asking the letter of the NUMBER.

Badly worded.

Did she get it?

PuttingDownRoots · 25/09/2022 10:40

How much was it worth?

cakeorwine · 25/09/2022 10:48

bigbeautifulmonster · 25/09/2022 10:39

This!
I too read it at first as asking the letter of the NUMBER.

Badly worded.

Did she get it?

That's what I first thought

Which letter starts the common English name of the number......

Which got me.

I was thinking of the letters that could start a number. And it could be 'T' for Twenty something.

But of course T isn't an option.

Good thing she had plenty of time to think about it.

Her and Jeremy worked together. And discussed Liechtenstein in only the way Jeremy can. And I am sure some people know a bit about Liechtenstein. From Cabin Pressure Grin

KikoLemons · 25/09/2022 10:51

I understood it - and I think got it right. But agree it's very badly worded.

Crunchymum · 25/09/2022 10:52

It was Dnow you are just purposely confusing us.

(I know you meant answer D as in S which is what I'd have said!)

chilliesandspices · 25/09/2022 10:59

I started off trying to think of a common English name like Anna then I saw the answers so had to reread it. It's a very badly worded question. Suggestions by PPs made more sense.

KimberleyClark · 25/09/2022 11:19

Makes sense for me.

EvilRingahBitch · 25/09/2022 11:26

You do have to say "common English name" rather than just "name in English" though because otherwise it would probably be R for "Republic of" or K for "Kingdom of" and Luxembourg begins with a G for Grand Duchy.
