Trigger warning I guess for news avoiders.

I've been feeling very uneasy since the Brexit vote but it's now tipped into outright terror that a huge catastrophe is coming and I can't see how we can avoid it! Hopefully people can make me feel better....

So:
*energy bills going up and government borrowing obscene amounts of money to cap it

  • also paying for the proxy war on Russia
  • also still paying off covid costs
  • companies struggling as not enough staff, lots appear to be on the bare bones and I suspect we'll see bankruptcies soon as they can't meet contractual obligations and have to pay out
  • No plans for fixing staff shortages
  • medicine shortages
  • empty shelves in shops
  • pound is tanking
  • everyone striking as staff can't afford cost of living
  • basic public services (transport, NHS, rubbish, roads etc) unreliable
  • power insufficient - risk of black and brown outs
  • inflation going up so interest rates rising too - increasing pressures on households
  • more people using food banks and more homeless
  • No trade deal with USA, out of EU so not benefitting from preferential energy deals they are negotiating with e.g. Norway
  • Then to top it all off, climate change, droughts, storms, flooding getting increasingly more severe

At the same time, despite spending as if there is a magic money tree, the government is cutting taxes primarily on rich people and refusing to publish the maths so we don't know how much their actions are costing!

I'm genuinely fearful for the future of the country as well as the world! Cheer me up please....

You work for the NHS but are defending the government?

I see the waste, inefficiencies and mismanagement from the inside. That is nothing to do with the Government. Thérèse Coffe doesn't micro manage the NHS. Wake up.

Do you honestly believe life is better in Bulgaria?😅

www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/11194608.areas-north-east-worse-off-parts-romania-bulgaria-poland/

This is current- areas of northeast poorer and have lower income than Bulgaria. Whether the Midlands and the poorer parts of the South fall into this category in the future- I cannot say.

In amongst all the issues already highlighted by this thread, there are for me two further elephants in the room.

The first is fracking. Destroying the economy (which is what I believe is the Tories' aim) is one thing. Destroying the environment/water tables is quite another.

The second is anti-trades union legislation meaning every single derisory offer needs to be put to members is a charter for employers to never increase wages by utilising Tory legistlation to bankrupt unions by forcing ballots on every deliberately derisory offer.

The UK will be lucky, in 2/3 years, to consider itself a third-world country. By that time the Tories will have fucked-off with the funds they have syphoned from the public purse, leaving a scorched earth (literally and financially) for whatever group of mugs pick up the votes next time round.

I'm not young, but if I were I'd be training for any career that would get me the fuck out of this currently circling-the-drain country.

Total bollocks.

People living in County Durham and Tees Valley have a lower income than places in Romania, Bulgaria and Poland, according to the Brussels statistics.

Large chunks of Greece also boast higher living standards than the North-East’s poorest sub-region – despite that country’s recent economic catastrophe.

Have you been to Bulgaria ?.

Ah so you believe it's all down to red tape and too many managers eh. The story the Tories have been spinning, that damn bureaucracy is the rot, is the lie that covers their deliberate dismantlement and privatisation of our most precious NHS. Of course it's not entirely efficient, can you pinpoint any system that is? If the NHS is so badly run, under your argument, why don't you leave ?

Prayitsok · 23/09/2022 17:03

I'm more scared about what this government is going to do next (or not do). Crises, wars, pandemics, recessions etc will always happen. But it's not as bad if you are being lead by competent people that the public trust to get us out of the mess. Which is not what we have currently and that's what's worrying me. The Tories are simultaneously destroying the economy, the NHS, schools, the climate...

I got my Irish passport recently but in reality I’m too old to move countries for work but am encouraging my 2 Uni kids to leave UK.

Where to?

I’m ok still but if things keep getting worse after next GE I’ll be glad I have another passport.

I wouldn’t want to split very far geographically from dc (been there done with my own family) and they have great friends and schools / opportunities etc

I think that is the post-Brexit plan, yes. Goodbye to food standards, workers’ rights, environmental protections and the welfare state. Welcome to tax breaks for high earners and corporations.

Pyewhacket · 23/09/2022 15:57

If the UK is so shit then leave. There are plenty of trains and aeroplanes heading in all directions.

We did.

It isn't as easy as it sounds now, thanks to Brexit.

Plexie · 23/09/2022 17:07

The OP didn't include nuclear war on their list. It's not a proper doomsday list unless it's got nuclear armageddon on it.

IpanemaChic · 23/09/2022 17:08

I also agree, UK is heading towards a mini USA. Bye bye NHS.

Well I was nursing for 26 years and Dh is a hospital consultant. We know the NHS has suffered terribly under Tory rule because we have the services fall apart as budget cut after budget cut happened. Also you used to get tons of applicants for jobs in the NHS, now Dh has been trying to recruit another Dr for his team for 3 years with no success. Why? Because they don’t exist, they’ve all left.

I did work abroad, in many countries, and could again, very easily but I was glad to come home. And the Conservatives have no ambition to privatise the NHS. That is just dogmatic tripe Labour wants you to believe. But you clearly work in the NHS as you speak with such authority about it.

Perfect28 · 23/09/2022 17:15

No, I work in a school where we have similarly been slandered as being lazy am inefficient as a pretext for underfunding. I know that your view in the public sector is very much the minority and it's shameful, frankly.

Currently the NHS and healthcare amount to 40% of all government spending, not to mention the additional £12billion just agreed, on top of planned increased budget. And why are the F1's I work with having to relocate to the North East then ?. The problems with the NHS are rooted within the NHS. I see it every day.

hobbledyhoy · 23/09/2022 17:21

We are absolutely fucked and it breaks my heart to watch it. From where we were to this utter chaos in 12 short years.
How these people sleep at night I'll never know.

Why, because it disagrees with yours ?.

And don't get me on the subject of education because I had to send my daughter to a private school ( on the advice of the Police !!! ) as the only solution to a shit education and being violently assaulted on a regular basis. Something the school and especially the teachers did absolutely nothing about.

By far the top destination of people leaving the UK has always been Australia, by a long long way. And as far as I am concerned they never were part of the EU.

I'm struggling here, but could it be that the Australians have trading alliances with countries in their part of the world? Rather than completely isolating themselves?
