Trigger warning I guess for news avoiders.

I've been feeling very uneasy since the Brexit vote but it's now tipped into outright terror that a huge catastrophe is coming and I can't see how we can avoid it! Hopefully people can make me feel better....

So:
*energy bills going up and government borrowing obscene amounts of money to cap it

  • also paying for the proxy war on Russia
  • also still paying off covid costs
  • companies struggling as not enough staff, lots appear to be on the bare bones and I suspect we'll see bankruptcies soon as they can't meet contractual obligations and have to pay out
  • No plans for fixing staff shortages
  • medicine shortages
  • empty shelves in shops
  • pound is tanking
  • everyone striking as staff can't afford cost of living
  • basic public services (transport, NHS, rubbish, roads etc) unreliable
  • power insufficient - risk of black and brown outs
  • inflation going up so interest rates rising too - increasing pressures on households
  • more people using food banks and more homeless
  • No trade deal with USA, out of EU so not benefitting from preferential energy deals they are negotiating with e.g. Norway
  • Then to top it all off, climate change, droughts, storms, flooding getting increasingly more severe

At the same time, despite spending as if there is a magic money tree, the government is cutting taxes primarily on rich people and refusing to publish the maths so we don't know how much their actions are costing!

I'm genuinely fearful for the future of the country as well as the world! Cheer me up please....

The English's love for the Tories has got us here.

Scotland won't forget.

Not to mention the national self harm that was Brexit.

To be honest I'd love Scottish independence. Then I could move there and leave all this brexit English unicorn upland behind 😁

Why aren't you in the streets protesting?

This shit happens because you let it happen.

You are allowed to demonstrate peacefully... so what is it that is stopping you?

Exactly!
We only have ourselves to blame.

Very difficult financial times have tended to come and go across history, so we have to focus on the (hopefully) brighter future, but it’s very hard not to assume that the next few years aren’t going to be very hard for the majority of us. I hope that won’t be true of course.

I think these just are really worrying times.
National and global problems are coming to a head. It’s completely understandable to find it overwhelming. And it’s outrageous that this crazy government puts out a budget with no proper costing of it around it, and at public expense.

We know their strategy will not benefit most people and it will have huge costs to us all which is absolute madness at time when so many people are under such financial pressure already.

I think we need to adopt a war time mentality.

Grow our own veg.
Repair holey clothes.
Make our own clothes.
Reduce our standards of cleanliness.
Eat a rationed amount of food, no sugary snacks etc.
Forget about holidays abroad/flying.
Drive 10 year old cars.
Mongrel dogs.
Dcs dressed in hand me downs.
Going to bed early in the winter.
Dcs home alone at younger ages rather than in expensive childcare.

We'd survive.

I agree with a lot of that. However these days making your own clothes is more expensive than buying clothes.

The Russians are waking up to Putin.

Eventually people in this country will wake up to the Tory's.

Many have stirred - soon they will act.

I think they'll have to.

Actually, I don't agree, I don't think Brexit voters (the root of it all) will EVER change their mind and these voters are the ones keeping the Tories in power.

But why should we just accept that?
We should be holding government to account and demanding better.

OP I share all your concerns. More for our children than ourselves.

The UK is in a downward spiral and it's only a matter of time before we crash.

I'm most worried about our children. I'm going to encourage them to emigrate soon after uni when they're young and it's easier to get in to other countries.

The anxiety right now feels like the pandemic all over again. 🙁

So we just accept this dire situation and government? Let them get away with running us into the ground?

We need to get them out and never let them into government again. And once we've done that join the single market and customs union.

@caroleanboneparte Mongrel dogs. Have you seen the price of mongrel dogs ? add a poo onto the name and sling on at least another grand onto the price tag !

Retired greyhound is where the savvy money is at Wink Pedigree breeding, most will be related to the royal's pets somewhere down the line, don't like the wet or the cold or too many miles, tiny dainty feet , short coat so no grooming costs, super insta worthy poses when sleeping, see pretzel, they don't like to be alone so you will need two ten Grin

I'm sure you mean well, but imo this 'blitz spirit' / keep calm and carry on mentality is partly what allows this despicable govt to get away with this unconscionable shit.

'We'd survive' is not acceptable. Why are people so willing to scrabble in the dirt for the crumbs from the Tory table?

Lets get out in the streets and let the bastards know what we think.

Why should the 5th richest country in the world have to get used to shit life? That’s just giving into them.

@Kendodd my father in law has changed totally - both Brexit and the Tory's- he thinks he was totally miss sold 'a pup' with the 'nothing will change' comments and he now thinks the Tory's are a bunch of corrupt , self interested lying knobheads - all my discussions with him paid off and he's in his 80's !! He also loved Denmark when he visited us a fair few times(until we moved back) and thought the way they did stuff made far more sense.

Half the people up in arms about this are people that voted for the tories over the past decade.

Now its all about getting out on the streets blah blah blah

All people needed to do for the past decade was to vote in a way that didnt run the country down but unfortunately they couldnt be arsed.

Not if they want the red wall back and to win a general election, unfortunately Brexit was in part why Boris won - 'get Brexit done'

Will Labour take us back into the single market? <Prays>

I think they would struggle for a number of reasons.

Whoever picks up government after the tories wont last more than a term, possibly two because the fall out of this current economic crisis wont be easily fixed and Labour would be blamed for everything that happens once they get in power

Secondly we are losing economic confidence of other countries by the day and I doubt we would meet the criteria to get into the single market but I dont know enough about that to explain the details

Thirdly, Labour have got too caught up in non issues that dont affect the majority of the public, housing, education, health care, public services, social care, crime are what affect peoples day to day experiences but they've got caught up in identity politics which are not only very divisive but turn voters off.

But Boris got Brexit done, so what happens now in the red wall areas isn't Brexit related, its back to being Government, specifically a Tory Government, related, isn't it ? Or are the Conservatives still dragging Brexit out to win votes ? Even though Boris got it done ? or didn't he ? Remind me when the referendum was again ? I know it was pre Covid !

The English's love for the Tories has got us here. We've made our bed (public voted Brexit as well) and now we have to lie in it.
