Where to for a snorkelling-based holiday, family of 5?

Is there anywhere in Europe where we can have great snorkelling? My only experience is in the Red Sea and Thailand but I wonder if there are good sites closer to home. I don't really want to go on a very long flight and for that reason, Thailand, Australia, etc, are off the cards. The Red Sea could work. The main thing for us is lots of marine life in warm waters.

If the Red Sea is realistically the best choice, is an all-inclusive package the best thing to do? And how much are we looking to pay? Finally, is it going to be possible to get accommodation for the 5 of us?

Thanks!

Malta and Gozo. Very clear waters.

I have had great fun snorkelling around the Greek islands. For me it was more of an add on to the holiday/ something to do at the beach rather than the main focus - but might be worth looking into.

Thanks! Can I ask if there is plenty to see, like fish and other marine life? Or is it just clear waters and interesting rocks?

Hi everyone, I wonder if everybody else has any ideas. We'd like a snorkelling trip with tons of fish to see, as well as interesting rocks and things like that. What do you recommend?

Yeah greek islands had cool fish. DD saw a swordfish. Freaked her out but she liked it. Lots of shipwrecks and other interesting stuff too.

Thanks! Can I ask whereabouts in Greece that was? Snorkelling around a shipwreck sounds amazing!

Following this with interest! We did a lot of snorkelling on the South coast this summer and it has made me want to try it in sunnier waters!

DH is about to go to Ibiza to complete his PADI open water cert so I assume it could be good for snorkelling too. Flights with EasyJet are very cheap.

That being said, he's only doing it so he can go straight into diving in Egypt when we go on holiday. I don't think Europe can compete with warmer waters like the Red Sea, Caribbean, Hawaii etc but it's not bad.

For coral reef snorkelling, Malaysia (Borneo) is great. Zanzibar is also well known but we had a horrendous experience there whrn we ended up snorkelling through a swarm of blue bottle jellyfish. Quite put me off.

It was kefalonia/Ithica that we went -and it was great, but the shipwrecks were not old galleons with doubloons etc but more modern yachts to avoid disappointment 😁

Cyprus was lovely.
