What is this smell in my kitchen?

All day today there's been a stinky cheese whiff in my kitchen. It got worst throughout the day and DP can smell it too.

It's not in the fridge, not the bin, not the floor. I've had the fridge and freezer out and hoovered/mopped underneath in case it was trapped food. I've had the kick boards out and nothing is behind them. I've had everything off the worktops and given them a good clean and antibac. The smell is still there!! 😩

Kitchen is small, cleaned fully every night and there's no clutter. WTF could this be, has anyone got any suggestions? Please.

I disagree, we had a pong in our hall, was a dead mouse decomposing in a shoe and covered in maggots 🤢🤮

When you say it's not the drip pan at the back of the fridge, have you checked the reservoir where the overflow collects? So not just that little gutter with the drainage hole on the inside of the fridge but if you pull the fridge out and look at the bottom there is a small container where the water collects and it usually evaporates into the atmosphere but if something like milk or food has leaked through it can stink just like you've described.

OH. MY. GOD. This is it! I just got the fridge out again to check and fuck me I nearly threw up. How did I not see this earlier?? This has never happened before!

Can I take it out? Seems wedged in there.

On the plus side I'd already messaged DP (in bed) to tell him it was a dead rodent so he'll be well chuffed it wasn't 🤣

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

You can't remove it unfortunately, I used an old rag to soak up the liquid and cleaned it as best I could, it's not an easy task!
Easier than tracing a dead rodent trapped
Inside a wall though

I found a clip! Used an old kids medicine tube thing to drain out the worst then I unclipped it to wash it out. Smell has COMPLETELY GONE!

Thank you!

As you were Mumsnet 😂

Dead rat either in the wall or under the floor. It will wear off eventually.

Mice are too small to pong.

The mouse that died under our floorboards definitely ponged to high heaven.

I had a hedgehog climb the back steps, go behind the cooker and die there. Smell was awful and took ages to discover. Could even be a dead starling in the gap between the walls. Had this too in a bedroom

Put a drip of zoflora in the pan before you return it!

I just knew it was going to be this. We had the same and I was going mad trying to track that stench down. I didn't think ours was removable either but it did eventually come out with a good yank. It is one of the grossest smells going!
