Address is expected but delayed. No idea why. What will he announce? Mobilisation?? Referenda?

Shoigu confirms it amounts to to if got 300,000 reservists.

Igotjelly · 21/09/2022 07:48

Amounts to around*

DancingBudgie · 21/09/2022 07:50

There we have it. If we don't start doing as we're told them he's going to chuck a big bomb on us all. 😂

ScarlettnotOHara · 21/09/2022 07:53

Have you noticed now the queen’s funeral is over it’s all news about Ukraine again ? Press no doubt will make us all start panicking again 😞

DontTrustThisPoster · 21/09/2022 07:55

I’m at a loss as what to think at this point. Other than Putin is deranged to hold the world to ransom with threats of nuclear war.

I had almost pushed Ukraine to the back of my mind, focusing on other things… out of sight out of mind (I know I know, but when there’s nothing you can do?) and almost convinced myself it was probably all coming to an end. So naive.

These threats aren’t new though. They are literally all he has to threaten the West with.

He starts to lose face and he throws his toys and say “yeh but nukes…” it’s typical Putin.

This isn’t over by a long shot but nothing has fundamentally changed in the past 24hrs.

HappyPeach · 21/09/2022 08:04

They've already got conscription, albeit without that name.

Kissingfrogs25 · 21/09/2022 08:50

General mobilisation won’t be the huge sea change some imagine. Given 50,000 actual soldiers have died - the news conscripts are not trained and will need to be, by the time he is ordered a full mobilisation and even very basic training - Ukraine will have a window of opportunity to close in on Russian occupied areas. Ukraine have millions and millions at their disposal - not so for Russia.

This is a really desperate knee jerk reaction from the Russians - and the referenda I guess is paving the way for Russians to claim Ukraine are attacking Russia. (After redrawing the map)

We are entering the most dangerous part of the war, Putin is losing.
What will the cornered and sickly rat do?

I am not sure what the Russian response will be to. General mobilisation would you want to sign up to be cannon fodder for a war you are guaranteed to lose?

Mybumlooksbig · 21/09/2022 12:39

Should we be worried?

Flights leaving Russia have sold out after Putin announces mobilisation, according to press reports. Also ‘how to leave Russia’ becomes top google search trend.

This is what a retired general said on the news today. He explained how we are in very dangerous territory and no one really knows what the hell he will do.

I agree with you

I'd be more worried if the nuclear bluster wasn't happening, to be frank. A threat doesn't work if you don't publicise it, which is what he's done. Don't forget also the dialogue is not simply Putin-the West. There are diplomatic hotlines that are in use. This kind of thing is never ever as simple as - man threatens to use nukes - man uses nukes, and any mouthpiece that tries to convince you it is, is reading from the propaganda playbook.

This is interesting:

Kyrgyz embassy in Moscow releases a statement warning Kyrgyz citizens to stay away from Russian army recruiters and contact the embassy if they’ve received draft notices.

The duma adopted the amendments for the foreign service to get citizenship dropping it from 3 years in the military to one and a couple of other things to make it easier for foreign people to get citizenship via serving.

But retired generals are always saying this. They said we should expect conscription when it first happened.

They then said the British army would be fighting in European ground.

They talk bollocks imo

These are people with years of military experience, some of which was with the old USSR.

Putin is literally fighting for his life, if he cannot come out with something from his Ukraine war, then he is as good as dead.

Yes he is repeating what he has said before but the longer he keeps talking like this, the more likely it becomes a self fore filling prophecy, one where he is forced to act on his threats.

If Ukraine attacks the areas that have had a fraudulent vote on becoming Russian, what will Putin then do?

I think Ukraine will have to negotiate, lose territory but then become a NATO member, to prevent further Russian incursions.

The loses on both sides are horrendous but i have no sympathy for the Russians, as far as i'm concerned, they are the enemy.

So many unknowns but he is a very dangerous man (why is it always a Dickhead male?)

Ylvamoon · 21/09/2022 15:48

... I think most of it is just talking.
And in the grand scheme of things, there is nothing I can do if he decides to nuke us all.

(There is an interesting programme on Radio 4 called Sideways- nuclear awakening. Makes for interesting listening and how things work behind the scenes)

This is really insightful. Alexandra2001.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/09/2022 16:01

I’m not saying that they don’t have years of military experience, but they are military generals whose main interest is fighting/wars and military things in general.

Have U.K. troops been conscripted to fight in Ukraine? No. But this is what the ‘military generals’ were predicting in February. I had a long argument with someone in here saying ‘Oh, but they will because General So and So’ said so. Did it happen?

One told us to get ready for conscription fgs.

Yes i can understand your lack of confidence but in the context of what could have been a superpower to superpower conflict in Europe, conscription was a real possibility.
UK has an infantry of about 23k, only around a 1/3rd could be deployed long term.

Thankfully, Ukraine held back Russian forces and whilst no BJ fan, he did the right thing and got weapons to Ukraine, he (UK) and the US arming Ukraine did stop Putins aggression.

Yes the General was wrong then but that doesn't mean he will always be wrong.

There is always several ex Generals giving their opinions on MSM, i take the majority view as being the most probable.

Alexandra2001 · 21/09/2022 16:23

@Igotjelly As are yours and many others on the Ukraine thread, which i like to read but not contribute to as much as i did.

L1ttledrummergirl · 21/09/2022 16:33

For those worrying about conscription in the uk-ds2 applied to rejoin the British Army 18 months ago.
Due to one fuck up after another he is still waiting, so they're not in any particular hurry to recruit right now.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/09/2022 16:38

l take them as their wish list. Not worth listening to. Why would a militaristic retired old man say anything worth listening to? Deluded.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/09/2022 16:40

He’s just pushing his militaristic agenda.

l’d listen to a doctor of Russian studies, but not a general. He joined the military for a reason.
