When do you put up Halloween decorations?

Strictly on the 31st October?

a day before?

a week before?

My toddler is very excited about Halloween this year, it’s the first year where she remembers the last, so she knows what’s going to be going on - and we’ve moved from a village that’s mostly elders that didn’t participate in Halloween to a village that mostly family’s so I feel like it’s going to be a good year!😄

but when do we put the pumpkins out ect?!

October 1st. It all gets very puritanical on these threads, there isn’t a limit on fun and celebration. I also managed to teach my children about Guy Fawkes, and the historical background to Halloween (which is not American 🙄).

I didn't know there was a limit to how many things could be celebrated in a year. is there a fine for going over it do you think?

Only if you mistakenly think that it's an American import 😉

Never, I hate it, it's garish tat. Everyone is entitled to their point of view even if it is against the majority.

I've seen more 'garish tat' at Christmas and that's up for months.

PrincessofWales · 20/09/2022 10:27

@Sparklingbrook there is plenty of garish tat at Christmas also. It doesn't make the crap at Halloween any less horrible.

MummyDrinksWine · 20/09/2022 10:31

Oh goodness. I can see this has created quite the divide.

@kewinsurreylass I’m not sure where you’ve made the connection that if you decorate for Halloween you don’t educate your children. But I really don’t think my 2 and a half year old will give quite the shite about an assignation attempt. Nor do I actually intend on teaching her about assignation at this age.
But while you must have been so busy educating your children on Guy Fawkes, you forgot to educate yourself that halloween originated in Europe.

For those who think the plastic tat halloween decorations are an eye sore… I agree😂 but again, my 2.5 year old LIVES for plastic tat decorations and I’m not about ruining her holidays for my own aesthetic (unfortunately!)

Mine is up now! To be fair, I left the bunting up from last year and the other bits look nice all year round by the woodburner. I just have a quilt to dig out for the back of the sofa, probably October 1st for that

Aiionwatha · 20/09/2022 10:31

Never. Halloween is horrible in my opinion.

You ain't seen nothing yet. Grin Give it a week or two and it'll really start. Keep hold of your Bingo card!

Maybe you could get some tasteful hand carved wooden ones. Wink But that will be wrong too.

Never - it is an american load of rubbish
Cannot understand why parents indulge this rubbish and do not teach their kids about Guy Fawkes which could have totally changed the uk and europe
Most kids will never even have heard of him or the plot
Incredible -
The dumbing down and forgetting of UK culture is incredible as is the lack of general knowledge most kids have now

Ding ding ding!

Who had 20 September?

You sound fun. Guess you know nothing about Samhain and All Saints Day?

Scoundrella · 20/09/2022 10:45

We don’t go too heavy on Halloween but the pumpkin usually gets carved a few days before so it’s still nice and fresh on Halloween!

I’ve got some lovely ceramic pumpkins 🎃 from
poundland that ill put out with candles in, some window stickers from Etsy that are a few years old now and usually the kids and I make some bat gardlands. One year we had fake cobwebs but I was clearing up for months (like glitter!) so I’ve hidden those 🤣

constantgarden · 20/09/2022 10:50

Never. It’s just clutter to me! We live in a small flat though, maybe if you have a big house it looks okay.

Except that’s not true. Halloween or All Hallows’ Eve originated in the UK. Yes it has been more commercialised in American and has become bigger probably as a right result of early immigrants in America wanting to connected to their UK roots. Halloween and Gay Fawkes night are a week apart so it’s possible to teach both. Don’t forget to explain that Fawkes was set up by the king so he could be killed so he won’t try and get rid of the monarchy.

OP - I will probably but them up anytime from the 22nd at the start of half term.

It is not actually American at all, but Celtic (v much part of culture here in the UK, there is no such thing as homogeneous"UK culture"), but that is besides the point. Gay Fawkes and Halloween are not mutually exclusive! I indulge it because I am Irish and it is a great time to share legends and part of my culture with my DC. I put out the witchy stuff because it is fun and cheerful, why not have a bit of craic with it? Give yourself a shake and don't be such a misery!

Surtsey · 20/09/2022 10:58

I bet you think Santa Claus is American too.

He is. His current image was invented by Coca Cola for an advertising campaign.

Never. There's too many celebrations in the year just to add another one.

Is there such a thing as too many celebrations? Certainly not in my house. We do Dia de Los muertos, Chinese New Year, Holi and Diwali regularly. Often others that I hear of and sound fun. We also do fun holidays I found online, not all of them as there are an awful lot, but the ones I think DC would enjoy. Eat ice-cream for breakfast day is a particular favourite. I don't think there can be too many days to celebrate!

DutchessOfMuck · 20/09/2022 11:10

I have found (some) of my people 🕷🎃👻🧙‍♀️🧹

I have activities planned from the first week of October right up to the big day 😁

Think I will decorate my house a week before Halloween.

So far I have planned:
Foraging in the woods for bits to use as decorations.
Pumpkin picking at a farm that has a fairy treasure trail and a fire pit, hot chocolate, marshmallows. That's a 2 hour slot.
Baking Halloween cakes and cookies
An evening walking around an enchanted forest
Decorating our finds from foraging

Decorating the house

On the main day we will have a buffet and watch movies. Then probably go round the neighbours.

Dd is 11 so might add in some spooky nights such as reading tea leaves and spooky stories.

Following this thread for more ideas 😁

You've definitely reached the celebration limit. Sad You need to drop some to remain compliant.

Bestcatmum · 20/09/2022 11:13

I have them all out for the whole of October, nut then I am pagan by religion 😉
