DH put a full chicken in a cold oven

Pinkkahori · 19/09/2022 22:36

Our oven is old, it takes a while to heat up. DH just told me that he forgot to preheat the oven today so he put the chicken in to a cold oven. He didn't allow any additional cooking time.
I didn't eat it but he and the kids did.
I'm worried about the possibility of food poisoning.
Does everyone preheat their oven?
Is it likely to be a problem?

I would be very cross if my husband undercooked a whole chicken then chucked it in the bin, given the price of food at the moment. Does he not have any common sense?

Carproblem · 19/09/2022 22:56

I think the fact it all went in the bin tells you it was badly cooked.

canyouextrapol · 19/09/2022 22:57

I don't preheat my oven for chicken, but it's a fan one. Mind I think a small chicken is about 1.5 hours so that doesn't sound long enough

I rarely preheat the oven

If you aren't preheating, then surely you will need more cooking time as you need to get the meat inside to the right temperature so it cooks properly.

Carproblem · 19/09/2022 22:57

Yeah I'd be pissed off so YANBU to be pissed off.

Idontevenknow · 19/09/2022 22:59

The preheated oven is not the issue, I rarely preheat mine. The end result is what matters. The problem is that your husband didn't check his meat was cooked before eating it and I'm not sure that lack of common sense is something you can teach to be honest

Hotandbothereds · 19/09/2022 23:02

Not preheating an oven is irrelevant as long as you make sure whatever you’re cooking is actually cooked.

Sounds like he just didn’t cook it long enough.

I’d be more concerned/irritated that a grown man can’t tell whether or not a chicken is cooked and to put it back in the oven for a bit longer if it was undercooked 🙄

Well yes, obviously that’s how it works… anyone who doesn’t pre heat their oven will be well aware of this.

Pinkkahori · 19/09/2022 23:06

It's an ongoing issue since I went back to work. He's working from home, I'm not. I think he should make an effort to put the dinner on, on the 2 evenings I'm in late. He doesn't want to make the effort.

Crosswithlifeatm · 19/09/2022 23:09

Now we get it,chicken is not the issue!

Flower2047 · 19/09/2022 23:12

Ohh right okay the chicken isn't the issue

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/09/2022 23:12

@endofthelinefinally , me too.
Obscene waste.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/09/2022 23:12

I think it needed longer, and I usually would pre-heat my oven but I never do for the turkey, I set it to come on at 5 am, so then it isn't pre

Childish, selfish and no common sense. You must be very fed up and disappointed in him.

purpliee · 19/09/2022 23:17

Ah, so he's punishing you for not making dinner by feeding his kids undercooked chicken? That's a unique kind of logic right there.

I honestly don't know what's going on in his head. It's exasperating.
We've had so many conversations about it but I'm getting nowhere.
He often cooks the meat part of the meal and doesn't bother putting on a carb or any vegetable or whatever to go with it.

Tell him, whatever pathetic fucking point he's trying to make, he does not get to make it by making the kids I'll, so grow the fuck up!

why does he think dinner is YOUR problem?. There are 7 night pw, tell him he's on 3 a week now.

also tell him, being a twat does not make him an attractive proposition.

endofthelinefinally · 19/09/2022 23:24

It isn't about the food. He is just being nasty and controlling. Does he pull his weight in other ways? Does he make you happy? Care about and parent his children? He clearly doesn't care if they get sick.

BirdyWoof · 19/09/2022 23:24

I’m sorry but how can a fully grown adult not know how to cook a chicken?

It’s incredibly common knowledge that you check if the juices run clear and that the meat isn’t pink. Further to that, when carving up said chicken, how did he not notice? How did he not notice when he ate it? Or when the children complained it tasted bad? To then still let them keep on eating the probably undercooked chicken?

Additionally, how can an adult not use their own oven properly that they’ve likely had in their house for numerous years?

I’m a distinctly average cook. I have two kids. If I didn’t feel comfortable cooking something, I wouldn’t try it. If I was cooking a chicken, you’d be damned sure I’d be not only googling an estimation of the cook time and temperature based on the weight, but checking it thoroughly before I served it up to my kids. If anyone said it tasted weird (as in uncooked/off), it would be in the bin.

I would never just wing a chicken into the oven, especially when cooking for children, and just hope for the best.

Is he always this careless and useless?

Cynderella · 19/09/2022 23:27

I preheat my oven for pizza, bread, pies, crumbles, cakes ... anything where you want a blast of heat to work its magic on the pastry or whatever, rather than a build up of warmth where the butter or other fat slowly melts.

I don't cook chicken, but I'd put it into a cold oven and take off 15 mins - but you just keep checking at the end, surely?

Sooverthisnow · 19/09/2022 23:28

Were you looking at the meat as you were eating it? If it was white it was cooked. If it had a translucent look to it then it wasn’t.

BirdyWoof · 19/09/2022 23:31

Just saw your update, he is always this careless and useless, then.

If it’s a matter of him being useless at cooking and not knowing what to do, and perhaps not wanting to admit it (but there is no ill intention behind it), then he’d be better off ordering a takeaway or having frozen meals for his evenings (something cooked properly is much more important than anything else). He learns how to cook basic meals in the mean time. As I said, I’m a fairly average cook, but a simple pasta dish as an example is easy to cook and filling. Kids like pasta. Sun win.

If he’s just a lazy bastard who can cook a meal but would rather feed his children undercooked food than bother his hole, then I really hope you give him a bollocking and don’t let him minimise you.

You need to be assertive or someone is going to get properly sick here, if they haven’t already. It really isn’t acceptable.

Pinkkahori · 19/09/2022 22:54

Thanks everyone.
I know how to cook a chicken and how to check if it's done.
DH has seen me cook plenty of chickens and had cooked more than a few himself too so I assumed he knew what he was doing.

Sounds like he knew what he was doing then!?! Is anyone sick? If not, not sure what this thread is really about,

BirdyWoof · 19/09/2022 23:31

*Win win.

IvyTwines · 19/09/2022 23:33

@endofthelinefinally yes, what a waste - chucking it away like he's Henry VIII at a banquet!
