What happens if you need the loo (Westminster Abbey)?!

Makes me cross my legs just thinking about it. Some of those people have been sitting there for ages already and the service doesn’t start for two hours. No-one seems to be getting up and popping off for to the loo…maybe they’re told they can’t once seated?

I think I would actually turn an invite down on that basis!!!

I was also wondering the same thing. The mere thought of it sets my ibs on overdrive. I don't think I could do it.

Tractordiggerdump · 19/09/2022 15:11

My husband used to be in the armed services. He said there would be a lot of peeing in that March!

ILoveMyBedTooMuch · 19/09/2022 15:15

Nothing in, nothing out and I bet they are all on Immodium especially all the military and naval ones.

I was brought up - (it's pretty normal in an upper middle-class upbringing) - that you don't trot off to the loo all the time - in the morning & the evening should be enough. And you exercise common sense - you don't drink much, you eat early. Normal self control & common sense, really.

Not really that sensible. Long term low intake of fluids and holding your pee isn't good for you in many ways.

where?

Well unless they all have catheters in, where do you think?

GCAcademic · 19/09/2022 15:19

I’m glad it’s not just me who thought this. I spent much of the time watching the ceremony and procession thinking that most people must have a much stronger bladder than me.

gabsdot · 19/09/2022 15:21

I have a 30 minuts bladder so this is an issue for me too. I was wondering about that 6 hour drive through Scotland last week too. Did they stop enroute at all?
That's a long time to go without going. 😁

JustDanceAddict · 19/09/2022 15:29

Also if you’re heavily on having to change frequently. That’s worse than needing a wee!

megletthesecond · 19/09/2022 15:30

I can't even cope with a work meeting. I get cold and stiff and it sets my IBS off. I wouldn't even get promoted let alone grace the worlds stage.

pigalow27 · 19/09/2022 15:30

Do adults really need to go to the loo every hour or so? How do people cope with sleeping? Do they just not drink for 4 hours before bed? We are only talking about 4 hours or so in the Abbey. It's not exactly 24 hours.

ILoveMyBedTooMuch · 19/09/2022 15:33

Just peeing their pants and uniform?

Small bladder capacity, UTI, diabetes, nerves, some other illnesses, being on a period etc can all make you need to go more frequently.
Some people have bladders of steel, I am not one of them!

IchbineinBerlinerin · 19/09/2022 14:52

🤣

Depends on your age. I had a fantastic bladder until hit 60 and now it can act up at any time. No liquids etc doesn't help as l have an overactive bladder sending me the wrong messages. I, also, spent the time wondering how they all last eg Camilla and Anne who are more my age and had to leave the service and straight into action. I couldn't do it.
Don't presume you will always have a great bladder!!!

Flux1 · 19/09/2022 15:56

So glad I'm not alone! I've always had a weak bladder so I watched today in wonder at how they were all managing for that long. Nerves alone would have had me bursting for the loo before the service even started!

People watching TV always make the mistake of thinking what they see on the screen is everything as it actually happened .

EVEN in live TV, multiple cameras offer the director a choice of what will be broadcast and what will be dropped.

I'm married to a BBC TV editor . so I watch TV to a constant technical commentary :-). Especially on continuity gaps.

At the start of the service, on camera, bishop in white dropped his speech notes on the floor out of reach and in view of the coffin and was so panic stricken he fumbled and almost dropped his glasses. Later, the dropped note had disappeared from the coffin shots. Someone we didn't see, had retrieved it.

Woman with long blonde hair shown dashing back into her seat DURING the service. Probably been for a pee.

After the camera showed Edward in front row seat in tears, with hanky wiping nose/drying his eyes, and Sophie hunting frantically for her own hankie, there were no further closeups on E or S. (Tactful command by TV director).

Playplayaway · 19/09/2022 16:08

You shouldn't really hold on until you're bursting. The only times I've had UTI's is when I've held on too long.

ThomasinaGallico · 19/09/2022 16:10

I noticed some similarly tactful angles on the King during the procession.

cptartapp · 19/09/2022 16:18

As a nurse I instinctively took one look at Biden and assumed he had a sheath on attached to a bag on his leg.
Can't imagine him queueing for the loo after the service.

BirdinaHedge · 19/09/2022 16:21

It won't kill you for one day!

JustDanceAddict · 19/09/2022 16:25

@2bazookas - I saw the note drop but not the retrieval!

Too public for a she-wee

Notanotherwindow · 19/09/2022 16:28

Mine too. Absolutely cannot manage more than 2 hours and even that gives me anxiety. I can do 4 or 5 hours during the night but sometimes do wake every 2 to 3 hours to pee. Nothing wrong with me, just an overactive bladder.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/09/2022 16:31

I always need a wee when I'm nervous and in situations where I can't go ot makes me want one even more!!

travellingfamily · 19/09/2022 16:33

I know someone who was there. Apparently the invitation said there are toilets Westminster Abbey but words to the effect that it was probably better to try not to need to use them!
