I need to buy warm but cheap clothes for the winter - share your best buys?

I work from home, and home is currently big and draughty and always cold. I have a heated throw but want to stock up on warm clothes like socks, leggings, hoodies etc. Will you share your warmest best buys with me please?! Thank

I always buy second hand - much cheaper and charity shops are full of lovely things, often hardly worn. This weekend I got a Vans hoodie for £6 and a fake fur wool-lined gilet thing (can't really describe it very well - sounds horrifying I know but it's nice) for £5.

There are even sales on in a lot of charity shops at the moment if money is really tight - we went to 8 or 9 on Saturday and about half of them had "everything for £1" rails.

Also helps charities and is more environmentally friendly!

I'm currently wearing a man's fleece top which I bought from Morrisons a few years ago.

It's thicker than the equivalent women's tops, and has longer sleeves, so it keeps the wrists warm.

So that's my general suggestion- look at the men's versions of what you want.

Good point - I always buy men's hoodies for myself, and dd usually has boy's ones too.....

Fleece lined leggings. I think mine were £6.99 on eBay (new) a couple of years ago.

I have a couple of simple throws in my living room from Dunelm. They were about £5 each. When I’m chilly I wrap myself up in one and they’re the warmest things ever. If I fall asleep in one I’m sweating when I wake. I’d highly recommend.

I bought these a few sizes up so that I can wear my thermal long johns underneath them when it is really cold. Smile

Make Fame-style legwarmers out of cut-off sleeves of woollen jumpers. Really warming and comfortable.

OP if you haven't already then get your thyroid checked. Sensitivity to cold is a really common symptom.

Kite22 · 18/09/2022 23:14

I've never needed to wear them in the house (have worked at home for years without putting the heating on) but for when I go out and stand on the side of sports pitches on freezing mornings, I swear by thermal tights. Then put leggings on top, normal socks, tracksuit bottoms and hiking socks.

We wear Heat Holders slipper socks at home. I love them.

Primark fleece lined leggings are cosy.

Do they not make you really sweaty? My kiddo lives in her fleece pjs, but I’ve found them really sticky in the past. Mind you, I wasn’t trying to economise on heating, then.

I prefer natural fibres and when I had more money I used to knit with merino wool, so I have plenty of jumpers. I don’t have much for my bottom half though, and I’ve been frozen all day today. I do not have anything fine enough (nor the fortitude) to knit myself a pair of leggings though, and I’m not in a position to buy any. So I suppose fleece is my only option and I’ll have to stop being such a yarn snob.

I understand wanting to buy clothes. A cold snap mightn’t coincide with a good month and you know what you’re spending before you commit. Heating can mount up and take you by surprise.

I’ve got some cashmere socks I was given which I adore, and they really help (I’ve always got cold feet) and my kiddo’s rip-off oodie is warm, if cheap. I wear it over everything else when I’m wfh and it’s lovely and warm. It was about £20 off eBay.

I must have looked stupid last March! Heating at 17°C, which I find very cold
for sitting still. Jeans, vest, long sleeved top, thin merino jumper, thick wool cardi, scarf, fingerless gloves, cashmere socks, a fleece blanket wrapped around sarong-style and an ridiculous oversized hoodie on top. Crazy knit lady! I was still cold, too. Good job I don’t have to do video calls!

I bought my dad a knitted zip up cardigan in Tesco last winter. It was fleece lined but had coat like satin lining inside the sleeves to slip over jumpers etc easily. I've never seen anything similar for ladies and I really fancy one myself this winter. I'm keeping an eye out on eBay and Vinted.

TheFormidableMrsC · 18/09/2022 23:52

Primarni "Oodie" is my best rec. Didn't have the heating on at all last winter

starfishmummy · 19/09/2022 00:57

Layers. And a wool jumper rather than acrylic ones as it will be warmer.

Singleandproud · 19/09/2022 01:06

This Brakeburn jumper If they don't have it in your size check out TK Maxx because it's last season and my local store had loads of them.
