I work from home, and home is currently big and draughty and always cold. I have a heated throw but want to stock up on warm clothes like socks, leggings, hoodies etc. Will you share your warmest best buys with me please?! Thank

Mountain Warehouse are great for cheap, warm clothes.

Was about to say the same.

Uagp · 18/09/2022 19:33

Tesco thermals and mountain warehouse are always my 2 massive go tos for winter clothes.

Following. I've put on weight since last year and the winter before I was pregnant so in maternity clothes

Spanisheomellletttes · 18/09/2022 19:46

In winter, I have to wearing an old and now a bit ratty light-weight ski jacket. Just keeps me nice and toasty.

The 3rd link is wrong. It's meant to be this: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07KCG2H36?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Decathlon sell fleece tracksuit bottoms, possibly listed as leggings but fit more like joggers.

Kayjay2018 · 18/09/2022 19:57

Find some nice items that meet your criteria and then go look for them on Vinted and pick them up second hand! You can get good quality even cheaper that way

Wenwes · 18/09/2022 20:20

Thanks for all the further suggestions and links, I really appreciate them.

@Sarahcoggles this is the first time I’ve had a job working from home, plus I really feel in the last year I’ve aged a lot, and one of the symptoms of this seems to feeling the cold more (and the heat in the summer!). Up to now, I’ve always been pretty cavalier about dressing sensibly for cold weather so I don’t really have much suitable clothing.

The teddy bear fleeces/sherpa tops are warm.

Also the jackets that are designed for indoor use. As warm as a coat but meant to be worn indoors.

More importantly, it might make more sense to look into -

draught excluders
coat the windows with the see through sheets that keep heat in. They make a massive difference.
Look at where the draughts are coming from and try and seal it with caulk. I went around loads of window frames checking. You can feel with your hands where draughts come in. Check any places like balcony, French windows, patio windows, doors leading to outside. You want to try to plug the gaps. Insulate anywhere cold seems to be coming in. The best time for this might be early morning as you can feel it better.
Thicker curtains in dark colours to keep warmth in.

Tk maxx sell cheaper wool jumpers. My mum has always had her heating off during the day in winter. I lived with her a few years ago and had to buy long sleeve thermal tops from m&s, wool jumpers and a gilet. These weren’t really cheap, but have lasted well.

ByeByeMr · 18/09/2022 20:38

I went in a charity shop yesterday and there were some good quality jumpers/zip ups from places like Next, Mountain Warehouse, M&S that sort of thing.

onlythreenow · 18/09/2022 20:42

Merino layers and socks are what I wear in winter, and yes, sheepskin boots rather than slippers. I have some merino blend trackpants as well, and they are very toasty (although not particularly cheap).

Bluevelvetsofa · 18/09/2022 20:57

Nordic socks are really warm.

Kayjay2018 · 18/09/2022 20:58

@whatsup00 we have an Edwardian house with some original sash windows, we have bought the stuff to seal our windows, basement and study now done, 3 bedrooms and dining room to go!
Also block up any unused chimneys and shit doors to rooms not being used. We also have a massive airbrick in the study we have covered over. This is on top of buying lots of extra layers

Kite22 · 18/09/2022 21:09

Agree with others - it doesn't matter where you get them from, the key things are - to wear layers

  • to make sure one garment meets the next ....so no gaps between top and trousers....no gaps between bottom of trousers and socks .....
  • keep the pulse points warm .....wear a scarf, or a top with a hood so your neck is warm....long sleeves with cuffs over your wrists etc
  • wear layers .....put a vest top under your blouse or t-shirt....wear a thinner jumper or sweatshirt and put a hoodie or bigger jumper on top.
silentpool · 18/09/2022 21:17

To add to the other suggestions, put a wool insole into your slippers - really stops the cold seeping up from the floors.

Also Primark fleece lined leggings were a game changer. So warm!

Would also echo those that suggest blocking draughts. In addition, my double sided draught stoppers under my old interior doors, made a big difference.

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/09/2022 21:28

I used to swear by cashmere and a down gilet but find fleece easier to wear and warmer. As others have said, layers and covering pulse points. Long tall sally do floor length fleece dressing gowns with nice long arms for £39.99. Some have hoods, useful for loss of heat from the head.

earsup · 18/09/2022 21:45

Love my onesie....had it for few years....also i check Ebay in summer and buy wool jumpers etc then as always cheaper !

Pedallleur · 18/09/2022 21:57

Merino wool base layers. Has the advantage of not smelling so you don't have to constantly wash it. 35% of heat is lost via your head so some kind of hat.

Shodan · 18/09/2022 22:15

I'm currently wearing a man's fleece top which I bought from Morrisons a few years ago.

It's thicker than the equivalent women's tops, and has longer sleeves, so it keeps the wrists warm.

So that's my general suggestion- look at the men's versions of what you want.

AreYouAFeminist · 18/09/2022 22:16

There are eBay sellers that sell genuine fur gilets for v reasonable prices. Some may be appalled but you'll never be cold in fur.

Helenloveslee4eva · 18/09/2022 22:20

It’ll be thermal / ski week in Aldi or Lidl soon. Seriously worth a punt - have got some really nice merino base layers. Don’t discount buying the men’s versions too.
uniqlo is great and well priced.

primark for cheap fleece blankets / oodies etc
