What’s the most beautiful classical music piece ever composed?

Pls help me put together a classical playlist for when I give birth in a few weeks and tell me your favourite ‘birth worthy’ piece.

I have many I love but think mine is Ralph Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, it’s gorgeously ethereal, so that’s going on there. I also love Camille Saint-Saëns's classical masterpiece, Danse Macabre but probably a little dark for this particular event even if it will be around Halloween!

Saint-Saëns The Swan. Simple but beautiful. I want it to be played at my funeral.

Hard to choose, but Nimrod from Elgar's Enigma Variations and Sibelius' 2nd Symphony.

I never tire of Handel's Messiah! So rousing and uplifting...

Bach - Was Mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd 9th movement

Beautiful and was on my own birth playlist. You could check out the classical playlists they have on Spotify for some inspiration, the Essentials one and Classical Focus are really good for the vibe I imagine you're looking to capture.

Good luck for your impending birth

Also a vote for Sibelius, but his violin concerto, and also the Mendelssohn mentioned above.

I love Ralph Vaughan Williams music. My father was a huge classical music fan and non of the rest of the family got it.
But a few years ago suddenly the scales fell from my eyes and now I love it.I feel so sad that I wasn't able to share it with him but he is gone now sadly. But I listen to lots of his old music .
He wasn't a strong R V W fan but he is my favourite composer by far. Lazarus and Dives is my absolute favourite piece ever.

Pachabel

ConnieSaks · 18/09/2022 09:53

So many - but today I’ll say:

St Mathews Passion (Bach)

Voices of Angels (Hildegard of Bingen)

&

Soave sia il vento (Mozart)

I do really like Vaughan Williams too!

Howyoualldoworkme · 18/09/2022 09:53

Bit of an obvious one but The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams

JanePrentiss · 18/09/2022 09:53

Vaughan's the lark ascending - sublime

Dc was introduced to classical music at school with Holst's The planets. It grabbed their attention, very mixed!

Oddly the BBC planet earth / frozen planet / blue planet by the composer whose name has gone out of my head is beautiful too.

There is a fantastic cover of liztomania on Spotify with strings that I love too.

Baldieheid · 18/09/2022 09:54

There's a playlist on Spotify called Cinematic Chillout, and I bloody love it. There's a theme called "The gift of mortality" from the movie Bicentennial Man that is heartachingly beautiful.

Shamelessly following

The Meditation from Thais - gorgeous.

RVW devotee here as well. His music from The 49th Parallel was played at the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral.

I had a cd when I was pregnant with DD1 - classic fm for babies and it has a lovely selection on I'm guessing no you can download from itunes or Apple Music 🎶

Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor. Ideally the recording of Jacqueline du Pré conducted by Sir John Barbirolli with the LSO. The Adagio movement is just beautiful.
