Squash and Mr Kiplings, "so 70s"

This has been said by my boss twice in the last week or so.

We provide tea, coffee and squash for staff refreshments and we get through quite a lot of squash, especially in summer. On signing off the purchase boss said "who even drinks squash these days, it's so 1970s".

Then a colleague had arranged a small spread for a meeting including some Mr Kiplings cakes. Boss said " 'Sally' still thinks it's the 70s."

Apart from been quite sneery, are those things so obsolete? They obviously still sell if you look at supermarket shelves. I think what's actually happened is my boss has become middle class since the 70s, so these are things she remembers from her childhood, but wouldn't buy now, whereas families from her original background (as most of our colleagues are) are still happily using them.

I might tell her that if she says it again 😆

Tbh they are a bit old fashioned, OP.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 15/09/2022 16:47

We go through loads of squash in this house and Mr kiplings is a family favourite.

Really don't care if they're dates. They're tasty!

OliveTheDog · 15/09/2022 16:54

We're definitely a squash and Mr Kipling household! I'm a 70s child. My DD is 14 - I've trained her well though!

PuppyMonkey · 15/09/2022 16:56

We love a bit of Robinson’s Barley Water in our house - your boss can stick with fancy elderflower jus or whatever the heck is in fashion these days but barley water is objectively the best.

Not so bothered about Mr K tbh - Aldi versions are just as nice.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 15/09/2022 16:59

I bought Mr Kiplings this week because they were on offer in the co op. My kids were thrilled! And I know I'm a terrible, awful parent but we drink squash here.

Phos · 15/09/2022 17:01

I wouldn’t say they were 70s. Lots of people drink squash (despite mumsnet members generally equating it to giving your kids crystal meth) and Mr Kipling cakes, well they’re just handy little portions of tasty aren’t they? I was born well after the 70s and don’t find them old fashioned.

Violashift · 15/09/2022 17:01

Squash is a bit children's party for me. Nothing wrong with a Mr Kiplings though.

Wouldn't say either were 70s.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 15/09/2022 17:08

Squash is definitely a children's drink, and Mr Kipling is a 70s throwback, but if you like it why not. I haven’t had either since visiting my granny as a child I don’t think!

ManagementPlan · 15/09/2022 17:10

I don't particularly like either, but neither do I sneer at those who do.

Squash was a thing in my childhood, but I prefer water these days and didn't give squash to my DC.

We never had Mr Kiplings at home because everything was homemade, but I was very jealous of those who got one in their lunch box rather than my homemade butterfly bun 😆

I drink squash 😳. I'm 45.

courgettigreensadwater · 15/09/2022 17:14

I drink loads of squash as the water tastes grim and as my two DS are water snobs and only drink spring water I figure I'll have squash to keep the costs down. Tbf. I love a cheap orange squash. And a vimto.

EspeciallyDivided · 15/09/2022 17:14

We don't have either at home but get through loads of squash at work (age range 25-65) so I don't think squash is going out of date. Kipling cakes seem to be as popular as ever from the amounts in the supermarkets. I want a cherry Bakewell now.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 15/09/2022 17:17

Eh? I drink sugar free squash because it tastes nicer than plain water. I didn’t realise I was being old fashioned. What am I supposed to drink?

RaininSummer · 15/09/2022 17:19

I don't like either but fail to see how they are old fashioned. Unsophisticated yes but also cheap and cheerful.

PileofLogs · 15/09/2022 17:19

Suspect he associates them with the 70s because that was when he was a kid and that’s the sort of thing people have to kids in the 70s.

FlounderingFruitcake · 15/09/2022 17:20

I do think it’s weird providing squash for adult refreshments, I know a lot of people have it at home but I’ve never seen it provided for adults like that. As a 90s child I’ve never had a Mr Kipling cake and would associate them with older people though from my student supermarket job since they were mostly who bought them!

notprincehamlet · 15/09/2022 17:24

Well I've just discovered orange, lemon and pineapple squash and I'm not going back. So there.

Johnnysgirl · 15/09/2022 17:24

They're still selling both of those items. Does that not tell her something? 🤷🏻‍♀️

LindseyHoyleSpeaks · 15/09/2022 17:26

Kia Ora - now there was a drink. My gran used to drink it neat as she didn’t realize you had to dilute it 🤮

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/09/2022 17:27

I love squash and drink it most days.

JohnsShirt · 15/09/2022 17:29

Everyone I know buys them, perfectly normal

sorrynotathome · 15/09/2022 17:29

It's not about class, so forget that. But you could call it cordial to bring it into the 21st century. Mr Kipling products are prime examples of UPF so very much 21st century...

SurpriseSurprise · 15/09/2022 17:32

I drink so much squash. I reintroduced it to my DH when we first moved in together and it got him off of drinking so much Pepsi max!

Sparklingbrook · 15/09/2022 17:32

We used to buy squash (Ribena) until Jamie Oliver ruined it.
I quite like a Viennese Whirl or a French Fancy.

Make a cheese and pineapple hedgehog next time OP and maybe some Angel Delight. 😂

ditalini · 15/09/2022 17:32

Non-alcoholic things that were around in the 1970s that we still drink:

  • water
  • tea
  • milk, both plain and flavoured
  • fizzy drinks of many flavours/colours
  • squash

If he was talking about Kwenchy Kups, Panda Cola and Cremola Foam he might have a point (although I think more 80s).
