Squash and Mr Kiplings, "so 70s"

This has been said by my boss twice in the last week or so.

We provide tea, coffee and squash for staff refreshments and we get through quite a lot of squash, especially in summer. On signing off the purchase boss said "who even drinks squash these days, it's so 1970s".

Then a colleague had arranged a small spread for a meeting including some Mr Kiplings cakes. Boss said " 'Sally' still thinks it's the 70s."

Apart from been quite sneery, are those things so obsolete? They obviously still sell if you look at supermarket shelves. I think what's actually happened is my boss has become middle class since the 70s, so these are things she remembers from her childhood, but wouldn't buy now, whereas families from her original background (as most of our colleagues are) are still happily using them.

I might tell her that if she says it again 😆

They are super dated and wouldn't be in my house, but crack on!

I find this quite bizarre. Do you only eat "modern" foods, then? Why? 😂

Your boss is a knob.

@Johnnysgirl just not something we have ever had as a family that's all, even as a child and I'm 32 now.

Never had squash as a kid and I work in dentistry so know it's awful for your teeth. And Mr Kiplings just remind me of pensioners 😂

You have to be the OPs boss and can just mention at the next meeting what refreshments you would prefer!

I refuse to believe there's two of you out there with this view

We have squash &Mr Kiplings and sometimes a suitable substitute. We keep them for the grandchildren though they seem to disappear more often than the kids appear. The cakes are a nice snack.

We also do Vienneta and Black Forest Gateau, and birds custard, squirty cream, instant whip, packet trifle. OH is a really good cook but we do indulge in 'old fashioned' stuff. (We have a standby pack of mash in case we can't be bothered making it)

What do people who don’t drink squash drink then? We drink loads of squash in this house. I can’t decide whether that makes me old or common!

Water… sometimes fizzy if we’re feeling fancy.

Tea, lots and lots of tea (with my Mr Kiplings or a chocolate Digestive)

I have only seen squash offered at kids soft play type parties in the 80/90s. Didn’t have at home as a child, never been offered at anyones house either.

@backinthebox - tap water, sparkling water, regular tea, herbal tea. Fresh apple with sparkling water if I’m feeling fancy in summer ( we have a sodastream type thing at home so it always available).

I find mr Kipling just super sweet

FreezyFreezy · 15/09/2022 20:24

We have squash - dh (born in the 70s) drinks it all the time and our dc have a lot of it, along with their friends if they visit.

We get Tesco's own brand Mr. Kipling's cakes for picnics.

Bottomofthepileasusual · 15/09/2022 20:25

I drink loads of squash. I'm 49. Apple & blackcurrant or orange lemon & pineapple
I like Mr Ks cakes too.

Really? My dentist and hygienist weren't fussed, I do drink the sugar free one and pretty weak strength (my version of blackcurrant is pale pink) Grin
Have the odd can of full sugar coke but no fruit juice/squash with sugar etc

He sounds like a raging snob. What does he suggest?
