Squash and Mr Kiplings, "so 70s"

This has been said by my boss twice in the last week or so.

We provide tea, coffee and squash for staff refreshments and we get through quite a lot of squash, especially in summer. On signing off the purchase boss said "who even drinks squash these days, it's so 1970s".

Then a colleague had arranged a small spread for a meeting including some Mr Kiplings cakes. Boss said " 'Sally' still thinks it's the 70s."

Apart from been quite sneery, are those things so obsolete? They obviously still sell if you look at supermarket shelves. I think what's actually happened is my boss has become middle class since the 70s, so these are things she remembers from her childhood, but wouldn't buy now, whereas families from her original background (as most of our colleagues are) are still happily using them.

I might tell her that if she says it again 😆

Lyon's Kunzel Showboats now they are a cake of the 70's.

ChalkHeartsMelting · 15/09/2022 18:27

A friend said that to me about chilli con carne and Vienetta.

I don't think we had chilli until about 1987 Grin

Stichintime · 15/09/2022 18:31

Always have some squash in the cupboard, you never know when you might fancy some. Mr.Kiplings definitely as a treat, usually on at Easter and Christmas though. 70s child, Mr.Ks featured quite heavily as my dad loved them. He particularly liked the fact they came in a box of six which equaled a perfect one each for us lot.

barbrahunter · 15/09/2022 18:34

aaww I like the sound of your dad, @Stichintime

Stichintime · 15/09/2022 18:36

Yes, he was a child during the war so loved to treat us kids with cakes!

Squirrelsnut · 15/09/2022 18:38

I'm a 70s kid and love a big glass of cold squash, but only without vile aspartame. I hate the stuff so much I even made my own elderflower and rose cordials this summer.
I don't like bought cakes anyway but there's nothing objectively wrong with Mr Kipling.
Your boss sounds like a sneery prat.

NanaNelly · 15/09/2022 18:38

@ditalini - Creamola Foam was something I drank in the 60’s.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 15/09/2022 18:48

Well fashion is very 1970s at the moment! So you can tell your boss that the 70s are extremely fashionable right now...

I like the suggestion upthread of ditching the squash and Kipling in favour of macaron and juice and seeing if your boss approves of the bill increase.

ethelredonagoodday · 15/09/2022 18:48

What would the boss rather you had?
Kale juice and artisan macarons?! 🤣
I don't buy Mr Kiplings regularly, but don't think there's anything wrong with them!

Vampirethriller · 15/09/2022 18:51

I love a Vimto and a cherry Bakewell! I used to love the apple and custard pies they did.
Going to buy Bakewell tarts tomorrow.

BaronessBomburst · 15/09/2022 19:02

DS just snarfed a Mr. Kipling mini Battenburg out the fridge. He's 12 so missed the 70's. He's partial to a cherry Bakewell too. And hot ribena.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 15/09/2022 19:05

Refrigerated battenburg? 😱 I'm not a judgemental woman, but…

Sooveritallnow · 15/09/2022 19:08

🤣🤣 totally bemused that squash is only for kids and not drunk by the middle class.
It may not be drank by snobs who have far to high an opinion of themselves, but it is certainly still consumed by middle class adults, as well as children, the working class, those who couldn't give a shit about the faux class system in the UK and just get on with their lives enjoying what they enjoy.

Your boss is a nob OP, that is all that is going on here

mumda · 15/09/2022 19:10

When they stop drinking and eating these things the stop buying them.
I won a load of Mr Kipling stuff. It was heaven.

TheHallouminati · 15/09/2022 19:10

Is the squash and Mr Kipling paid for by boss or out of petty cash?
Sounds like it's time for you to show just how modern you can be - on the company's buck of course.
How about some expensive kombucha or cold-brewed tea and coffee instead of cheap and cheerful squash?
Perhaps you can outsource your workplace catering to pret?
As you said, it sounds very much like your boss has forgotten that squash and mr Kipling's are pretty standard fare.

A chocolate bourbon eaten alongside a glass of orange squash is chefs kiss

TheHallouminati · 15/09/2022 19:13

@BaronessBomburst
Hot ribena is a favourite in this house but we don't have a lot 'cos ribena is fairly pricey compared to supermarket squash. Such a treat, especially when you make it extra strong!

latetothefisting · 15/09/2022 19:14

So squash is both old fashioned and only for children....

Why do so many posters make themselves look like twats by extrapolating from "I don't do/like xyz therefore I shall declare nobody does/likes xyz, ignoring all evidence to the contrary...."

BaronessBomburst · 15/09/2022 19:16

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 15/09/2022 19:05

Refrigerated battenburg? 😱 I'm not a judgemental woman, but…

I have no explanation for this either!

AlwaysMunching · 15/09/2022 19:18

The attitude of your boss and a few posters on here is really odd! 😄

By squash I'm assuming you all mean diluting juice which is what the Scots call it? Like Robinson's apple and blackcurrant or equivalent.

Mr Kipling isn't high end but it's affordable, reliably decent, and perfectly portioned. The battenburgs are the absolute best, I can't buy them or they disappear in the car on the way home 😋

Sux2buthen · 15/09/2022 19:18

I've just developed a strong hatred for the word 'squash'

Riapia · 15/09/2022 19:21

ditalini · 15/09/2022 17:32

Non-alcoholic things that were around in the 1970s that we still drink:

  • water
  • tea
  • milk, both plain and flavoured
  • fizzy drinks of many flavours/colours
  • squash

If he was talking about Kwenchy Kups, Panda Cola and Cremola Foam he might have a point (although I think more 80s).

“Panda it’s frothy man.”

Smartiepants79 · 15/09/2022 19:25

I’m wouldn’t say squash is dated? Not perhaps a particularly adult drink but all my friends and colleagues and children drink it.
Mr Kipling have never been something we’ve eaten in our house. My mum, grandmother and me all like to bake our own. I would possibly buy them in the scenario you describe though.
You boss sounds like a bit of an up himself idiot. His comments are judgy and mean. have you ever called him on it.

ContadoraExplorer · 15/09/2022 19:37

Balls to your boss - French Fancies are lucky if they last the shopping day round these parts!

ibelieveinangels · 15/09/2022 19:39

Im 50 and i drink squash. Recently found cherries and berries flavour and its lovely. Stops me drinking fizzy drinks. I love a mr kipling cake.

20viona · 15/09/2022 19:39

They are super dated and wouldn't be in my house, but crack on!
