Driving test tomorrow but I can’t drive

Do I cancel? There are still times (not often but at least once or twice a lesson) when my instructor has to brake for me or tell me to steer away from a parked car. My test is tomorrow. I’m not ready am I? I still can’t reliably reverse park either. I feel like crying. I have 1 hour before test tomorrow to somehow magically learn how to drive. Instructor says she thinks I’m ready. I just don’t see how.

If it's booked you won't get the money back. Are you actually dangerous on the road? If not I'd be tempted to have a go and treat it as a mock to see how you would have done. If you pass, bonus!

LovelyBitOfSquirrrel · 14/09/2022 18:22

I don’t see how you’re making those mistakes and your instructor is saying you’re ready. They’re mistakes you would make early on not when you’re test ready but maybe you’re making it sound worse than it is as you’re nervous.

honestly, if you wouldn’t feel comfortable driving alone if you were to pass tomorrow then I would defer your test. You could fluke a pass tomorrow and not be ready and that’s more dangerous.

I failed my first test and I am glad I did as there was no way I was ready to be driving alone.

hope you figure it out.

coldfeetmama · 14/09/2022 18:22

Your instructor would not tell you you were ready if you are not

Breathe

Can you take some Calms ? This is nerves and completely normal
Go tomorrow - breath deeply , get in car , relax your shoulders and forget everything else
Engage brain with all you have learned and do your best

Very best of luck to you !

No. You’re not ready if you’re driving towards parked cars.

AnotherCountryMummy · 14/09/2022 18:22

If it's booked and your instructor thinks you're ready then you may as well give it a shot. I wouldn't think you'd get your money back cancelling this late.

If you do pass, just have a couple more lessons with your instructor to boost your confidence. You don't have to go out driving alone until you feel comfortable.

Blanketpolicy · 14/09/2022 18:23

If you have paid for it, cant get a refund and it isnt too inconvienent you might as well do it, at least you'll get to see some of the process and know what to expect next time.

OneForTheRoadThen · 14/09/2022 18:24

Go for it, even if you don't pass you'll have gained really valuable experience of the test situation and you'll be much more prepared and less nervous next time. And you might pass! Good luck 🤞

Boxowine · 14/09/2022 18:25

Yes you are.

Frazzled2207 · 14/09/2022 18:26

Surely the instructor wouldn’t have applied if you weren’t ready

if it helps I had a total panic the day before my test. Literally in tears. I could drive but I could not manoeuvre. On the day I passed.

Insideallday · 14/09/2022 18:27

Still go for it but with the view of it being for experience than passing it. Don’t stress, that’s the worst thing you can do.

Use It as a practice run for your next test

BruisedSkies · 14/09/2022 18:29

Why is the instructor having to brake for you? You’re not ready if they’re having to do that.

Toottootbang · 14/09/2022 18:30

But surely if the examiner has to tell you to alter your position on the day that’s a fail? I had a 5hour lesson today - I have had a semi - intensive driving course - and it happened 3/4 times. My manoeuvres are also hit and miss. Sometimes perfect sometimes I make an absolute hash of it. I know I might as well take the test but it’s a really deflated feeling

My instructor braked today because at a roundabout it looked clear to me, the car was signalling to come off and looked like he was positioned that way but actually decided to come round instead.

GG1986 · 14/09/2022 18:57

You don't sound ready to be taking your test and your instructor shouldn't have let you book your test if he is still having to brake for you and take control of the steering wheel. But if it's paid for and booked then you may as well go for it anyway and see how you get on.

MintyGreenDreams · 14/09/2022 19:01

Do it for the experience if nothing else.If you fail then at least you'll what to expect next time

MintyGreenDreams · 14/09/2022 19:01

know

WonderingWanda · 14/09/2022 19:02

Op, Tey not to panic. I passed my test mire than 20 years ago. I drive a lot and have driven a huge range if cars but every. Having lived in an area with on street parking for 10 years I am especially skilled at parallel parking, for the last 10 years I've had to reverse round a corner off my drive. Every now and then I fuck up a manoeuvre and every know and then I misjudge a junction or roundabout and have a an 'oh crap I almost hit that car' moment. Even experienced drivers make mistakes. Your instructor clearly thinks you are able so go for it. If you don't pass because you aren't good enough then just have another go.

Toottootbang · 14/09/2022 19:10

To be test ready do you need to be driving with no advice from your instructor at all? I assume so.

Sally090807 · 14/09/2022 19:16

H9w many hours of lessons have you had in total and how did you get on with your mock test.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 14/09/2022 19:21

The roundabout doesn't sound like you were at fault and if you've done 5 hrs of driving, no wonder your at your wits end.

I've been driving 25 years and still mess up manoeuvres sometimes.

Have a bath, do some meditation to relax and go into it tomorrow with a positive outlook. If you don't pass, don't worry. You'll know what the test is like and you can work on some more specific areas.

And remember to breath and think during the test. Better to take a couple of seconds then rush something and get it wrong.

Good luck.

Toottootbang · 14/09/2022 19:21

30 hours in an automatic car. I passed my mock but to be fair a lot of it was sat in traffic

OP posts:
JasmineIndigo · 14/09/2022 19:22

Just treat it as a practice test and if you fail at least you'll know what to expect next time. Good luck!

Nameandgamechange123 · 14/09/2022 19:25

I love the way you described your driving today as 'hit and miss' 😂

I think you should do everything you can to postpone.

Toottootbang · 14/09/2022 19:27

The thing with postponing is I already have to pay for my instructors time and have already paid for the test. It feels like chucking money away to not give it a go

OP posts:
pensionconfusion · 14/09/2022 19:28

Go for it. If you fail then you will be better prepared for next time.

When I sat mine my instructor told me I was ready but was still occasionally reminding me to do this or don't do that. I passed but at times thought I had failed.

You will surprise yourself when you sit the test at how well you do when your instructor is not there to remind you. Instructors can also be a distraction if they talk to you about other things. An examiner sits in silence so you have plenty of time to think about your manoeuvres.

Good luck 🤞🏻
