If they did abolish the monarchy, how would they divide up the land/assets?

I have no clue how they'd do this.

All the land - how would they split it? All those charters going back 100's of years....

I would assume Crown Estate would transfer to the Government.

Yes, although I think some of their property came down from branches of the family that are not royal so that stuff would remain in their ownership.

'They' would give it all to me.

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 13/09/2022 21:26

I'll take Sandringham!

They should set aside a lot of money for when the north of Ireland is incorporated back in to rep of Ireland, cos that is going to be so expensive. The mind boggles.

Pedallleur · 13/09/2022 21:38

I suspect it would all be grey. Balmoral, Sandrigham aren't Crown Estate. They are the property of the RF. As are the Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster. Charles is the biggest private landowner in the UK. That's staying with them. They are already ahead by having Queens/Kings Consent so unless there is a dramatic change in Govt it won't happen

The angry mob would take it over and turn it into collective farms, then within about 5 years the farms would inevitably fail and the assets would be sold in fire sales by some dictator, who would then be found 15 years later living in a flash pad in Crete or Sardinia or somewhere (or in a hole, Hussein style).

That's what.

If ifs and ands were pots and pans then what a lot of maybes.

Think it would make Brexit look like a walk in the park. Decoupling all that would take years and cost millions and millions.

HairyToity · 14/09/2022 06:49

I think the Crown would become government. It would continue to be let to it's existing tenants, but all of the income would be for government. Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace et al could be tourist attractions or apartments.

The rest would be royal family. They currently have an exemption for inheritance tax and hopefully this would be removed. There would be no deals on the tax.

Presumably they would have police protection for a secret number of years thereafter, and then they'd just be citizens.

I'd love to see tthe monarchy abolished in my lifetime.

They'd sell it to foreign businessmen and oligarchs
