What is your employer doing about people who don't work Mondays?

I work in the public sector, Monday will be a day's paid leave.

So are people who don't work Mondays entitled to a different day? Would anyone have the nerve to ask?

Of course not. If you don't work Mondays surely that just means that you don't get several bank holidays.

Everyone is entitled to bank holidays so if Monday is not a working day, you can take the day elsewhere.

primeoflife · 12/09/2022 19:00

@KittyMcKitty that doesn't work in schools, you only get the bank holiday if it falls on a day you work

I know that’s what I said.

Skinnermarink · 12/09/2022 19:50

I don’t work part time, I work full time condensed and I don’t work on Mondays. I am definitely asking to take it another time. That’s what I do with the other bank holidays, I’m a full time worker I just don’t work on a Monday, so I don’t see why I should miss out.

Daytone · 12/09/2022 19:58

Legally your employer doesn’t have to give it to you even if it’s a bank holiday - mine isn’t. I didn’t know that until I checked on the UK government website.

It’s a Bank Holiday due to the funeral - it’s that day so there’s nothing to ask.

I work in a school and for those who work part time if a bank holiday falls on someone’s non working day they don’t get an additional day.

This is illegal. BHs must be given pro-rata to staff who don’t work Mondays.

FitAt50 · 12/09/2022 20:33

For the love of all thats good. Its a day off so that people can watch the queens funeral.

WyldeSwan · 12/09/2022 20:40

We have been given a day leave (pro rata) that must be taken on 19th.

So those that don't normally work Monday get paid as if they were in for those hours.

Those who work part-time, but were rota'd in to

WyldeSwan · 12/09/2022 20:42

Blooming thing!

Those that were rota'd in to work more hours than they would be entitled to as pro rata holiday can either make up the rest with their normal leave, or have the hours added in to work over the next few weeks to make up the difference

thanksamillion · 12/09/2022 20:43

My understanding is that it depends how your contract is worded. If it says (eg) 5.6 weeks or 28 days then your employer doesn't have to pay you for the extra day. If it says 20 days plus bank holidays then they do. If you work part time this is pro-rated.

primeoflife · 12/09/2022 20:46

@JaniceBattersby have you information like this as this hasn't been the case at any school I've worked in

CallMeLinda · 12/09/2022 21:10

I suspect it depends on your workplace and your contract.
Legally (according to .gov website):
*Bank or public holidays do not have to be given as paid leave.

An employer can choose to include bank holidays as part of a worker’s statutory annual leave.*

Cervinia · 12/09/2022 21:12

I don’t work Mondays, I do 24 hours of a 36 hour FTE. I expect to get 2/3 of a 7.12 hour day in hours added to my leave.

TheTeddyBears · 12/09/2022 21:19

I'll find out tomorrow! Also work in public sector. However in this type of situation usually they just say oh well it's bad luck. For instance if they give an unofficial day off at Christmas Eve (which they've done now for about 5yrs) if it's not one of your working days, too bad you get nothing! Drives me mad. I've changed days only a matter of a few weeks ago too from a Tuesday off to a Monday.

I can't see this working the same as a normal bank holiday as it's a day off because of the funeral and tough if it's your day off. Hope I'm wrong when I log on tomorrow!

Foxymoxy68 · 12/09/2022 21:28

I’m a teacher and don’t work Mondays. I was informed today that I can take another day off later in the term to make up for it. Didn’t expect that at all but am very pleased! I wouldn’t have asked but I’m not complaining!

That's what I'm hoping for too 🤞

brookstar · 12/09/2022 21:39

It's being treated like any other bank holiday so staff that don't usually work Mondays will get additional hours added on to their annual leave entitlement.
I work at a university.

megletthesecond · 12/09/2022 21:39

I don't work Mondays but will probably get the BH added to my annual leave.

bonkerstonkers · 12/09/2022 21:40

No BH for NHS and no alternative day given either ! Lose lose for them

NeedAHoliday2021 · 12/09/2022 21:41

My company is treating it as a normal bank holiday but my dh’s local government organisation is saying the time off is for the funeral so only relevant for those working on that day.

Bunnyfuller · 12/09/2022 21:41

Isn’t it Mon and Tues as the funeral is Monday and the coronation Tuesday?

NeedAHoliday2021 · 12/09/2022 21:43

@Bunnyfuller there was a year between king George’s death and Queen Elizabeth’s coronation!

Bunnyfuller · 12/09/2022 21:45

Yes I realise that but I thought they’d said this was the timetable?

Iliketeaagain · 12/09/2022 21:48

Maybe that depends on your trust. We are getting the extra hours - either taken on the day if you don't normally work bank holidays or are rostered to work in a service that runs on a bank holiday and can't work because schools are shut or added pro-rata hrs to leave entitlement if you are rostered to work in a service that runs.

Plus agenda for change payment for bank holiday working.

The coronation definitely isn't happening on Tuesday! It will be a normal working day.

Official royal mourning continues for 7 days after the funeral. They won't hold a coronation during that time. Plus it take a lot of planning!

GretaVanFleet · 12/09/2022 21:53

I now work M-F but the role I was in previously was W-F I had accrued about 12 bank holiday days in the 2 years doing that job and I still have 9 to take that I have carried over into my new job. My employer doesn’t put a time limit on using them and if I did leave before taking them, they would either be taken before the last day or paid.
