And how many teachers / TAs?

OP posts:
Bzzz · 12/09/2022 08:57

14 children, 1 teacher, 1 TA

Choice4567 · 12/09/2022 08:59

20 children. 1 teacher 1 TA

TempsPerdu · 12/09/2022 09:00

DD starts Reception next week (London suburb). There will be 30 children in her class, with one class teacher and one TA, along with a nursery nurse who works across both classes (two form entry school).

Lots of other local schools will have smaller Reception classes this year, however, due to a combination of the low birth rate and significant numbers of families moving due to covid/Brexit/cost of living.

20 children, 1 teacher 1 ta
When eldest was in reception it was 27 with 1 teacher and 1 ta though.

plinkypots · 12/09/2022 09:02

16 1 teacher 1 ta

Figgygal · 12/09/2022 09:02

23
1 teacher
1 TA and another 1-2-1 for a SEN child

ohidoliketobe · 12/09/2022 09:07

30 kids 1 teacher - then split across that class and the other reception class are 4 TAs and an NQT. So 2 x 30 classes have 2 teachers, an NQT and 4 TAs between them.

30 children, one teacher, one TA.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/09/2022 09:09

child was in reception last year, 29kids 1 teacher and 2 assistants.
my god some of your childrens classes are tiny

tulipsunday · 12/09/2022 09:12

Are some of these private schools? From my teaching experience I would say 30 children 1 teacher and 1 TA/nursery nurse is average for a state school in a well-populated area.

Bimblybomeyelash · 12/09/2022 09:13

22 children with 1 teacher and 1 TA. My eldest was in a class of 30, with the same teacher and TA.

Beees · 12/09/2022 09:13

Some tiny classes being listed here. I'm presuming these schools are either private or remote? If not I'd worry they are not viable long term with such low numbers.

I've taught in more reception classes than I can count and at more schools than I can remember and only twice I've been in a class with under 25.

Most classes had 28 or more and were staffed by a teacher and a TA.

Cuddlywuddlies · 12/09/2022 09:14

We are in Ireland
For DD there were 9 in her class, they had 1 teacher.
For DS there were 14…and 1 teacher.

pinok · 12/09/2022 09:15

28- one teacher and two TAs.

and a couple of one-to-ones for SEN children but that doesn’t really count

Cattenberg · 12/09/2022 09:17

30 children, 1 teacher and 1 TA. There are two reception classes, each with the same set up.

Nope.

It's due to birth rates and people moving to get more space due to Covid.

I have a friend in Surrey. 1 child had 18 children in her reception class, 2 years later due to Covid and people moving out of London the other has 30 children. The birth rate actually went down in those 2 years.

My own child has less children in her nursery in London as it is in one of the boroughs were people have moved out off according to preliminary census results. Though to be fair her nursery is full of children whose parents work in central London but don't necessarily live there.

Cleothecat75 · 12/09/2022 09:18

Our local primary has two classes, one with 29 and one with 28 pupils. Each class has a teacher and a TA and there is a 1-2-1 TA to support a specific child (friend is the 121 and we were talking about this over the weekend).

ifoundthebread · 12/09/2022 09:20

22 kids, 1 teacher, 1 ta, 1 student and a ta that floats through different classes through the week.

MrsLJ2014 · 12/09/2022 09:24

Definitely the lower birth rate this year - our school has 2 reception classes usually with 30 children every year, we're always oversubscribed but this year there's about 20 in each class with a teacher and a TA in each class.

FarmerRefuted · 12/09/2022 09:26

24, one teacher and two TAs.

GelatoQueen · 12/09/2022 09:27

There was 25 and 1 TA.

GelatoQueen · 12/09/2022 09:27

and 1 teacher

Booklover3 · 12/09/2022 09:29

30 kids one teacher and one TA

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 12/09/2022 09:30

Schools legally have to to have 1 teacher for 30 children. There is no requirement to have a TA although any school would if they can. Schools with fewer children than 30 are not financially viable and as budgets haven't gone up but pay and utilities have, schools will have no choice other than to reduce staff numbers. Which also costs money - redundancies or restructure also has to be paid for out of school budgets.
