And how many teachers / TAs?

OP posts:
Whendovescry03 · 12/09/2022 09:31

15 kids, one teacher, one TA.

But it's a village school and those 15 kids are the whole year group.

Clevs · 12/09/2022 09:31

19 children, 1 teacher, 2 TAs (but I'm not sure if both TAs are there at the same time).

Should say 10 children, not 19.

25 children, 2 teachers, 2 TAs. They have specialist teachers for some lessons like Art, French, PE and Mandarin but I guess they just tag team with the regular teachers.

Thee low birth rate is definitely a thing around here. It's been declining for a few years.

In the past the local school was always massively over subscribed. You had to live within 10 minutes walk of the school. The last 4 years they have taken kids as far away as ten miles. And even then I believe there are spaces in infants and Yr 3.

A fair few have moved or have taken kids out to go to private school.

One of the other schools locally you had to live within 2 mins walk just a few years ago. Now even they are also taking kids from other parts of the area.

Its really noticable.

Our school is a village school with single form year groups from nursery (age 3-4) up to year four (age 8-9), the biggest class has 28 children.

VoyageInTheDark · 12/09/2022 09:39

29 kids 1 teacher, don't know how many TAs

Phos · 12/09/2022 09:42

On the low birth rate, I noticed it when DD was a baby (she's actually in Y1 now but the above was true for her year and the current reception) So she was the born in 2016-17 cohort. I changed my mind on the nursery I'd chosen in January as she was due to start in March and found lots of them still had plenty room.

Her school is a one form entry and kids are usually signed up from birth or even before (independent). The year group that started school the year she was born had 25 kids and 48 on the waiting list. But her year group some only signed up when they were maybe 1 or 2 which would have been unheard of usually.

Fixesplease · 12/09/2022 09:51

6 reception this year, 1 teacher. 8 in Y1 also 1 teacher.

Very small village state school, its a lower intake this year, next year has 12.

Thenightwemet16 · 12/09/2022 09:51

24, 1 teacher and 1 TA (and I think a 1:1 TA).

It's pretty average for our school. We're in a large-ish village and the school only increased to two-form about 7 or 8 years ago. My elder DC now in year 2, only had 21 in her class in reception but now has 26. Tbh, I think the school will probably increase in size fairly soon due to nearby imminent housing developments...

TempsPerdu · 12/09/2022 09:57

Yes low birth rate very pronounced here in Outer London (friends in other cities like Oxford and Brighton report the same).

DD’s school is CofE and normally quite oversubscribed - from where we live you’d have to attend church for 2 years before applying to be in with a chance. This year everyone who listed it as first choice got in, regardless of church attendance. Same for other church schools locally.

Our nearest community school (2 form entry) has only taken 32 pupils this year. Two other schools expanded fairly recently to take 90 children, but have only filled about 45 of the places so are going back down to 2. Some talk of mergers/closures in the future. Lots of school nurseries closing due to low numbers too (although that’s a combination of birth rate and them no longer fulfilling the needs of working parents).

Connie2468 · 12/09/2022 10:02

About 26 children I think, 1 teacher, 1 class TA and 1 1:1 SEN TA.

UnbalancingAct · 12/09/2022 10:03

23, 1 teacher. It was a mixed class, hers and the year above. 10 in her year group.
Parallel mixed class had 11 in her year group and 25 total. With 1 teacher and 6 hours TA

littlelionroars · 12/09/2022 10:19

29 children, 1 teacher, 1 permanent TA and
a couple of other TA's who seem to be available when extra assistance is required.

The teacher told me that she felt the class was a good size and that this was better socially, as in smaller classes sometimes kids don't have as much choice in who they play / make friends with.

I must admit 29 kids feels like a lot to me as I went to private schools where the class size was always around 18.

Blanketpolicy · 12/09/2022 10:23

18 with 1 teacher and a TA shared between classes. It was a bulge year so they expanded to 3 classes for the first 3 years then mixed them up into 2 classes.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/09/2022 10:32

I’ve just realised that I don’t know. It’s a popular school - I guess 30 kids? And there’s a TA assigned to the class.

Narcheska · 12/09/2022 10:36

My sons reception has 3 classes of 30 children 1x teacher and 1 xTA per class.

wouldn’t know low birth rate was a thing round here!

Cyclingforcake · 12/09/2022 10:37
  1. 1.8 teachers and a couple of TAs. They normally have 2 from entry but due to low birth rate this year have a weird set up. But I know the school and trust the teachers and it’ll all be fine.
Cyclingforcake · 12/09/2022 10:38

Don’t know why it’s laid out like that. 34 children and 1.8 teachers.

swimmingincustard · 12/09/2022 10:40

20 children, 1 teacher, 1 TA. In an 'L' shaped classroom shared with another 20 children, teacher and TA.

There used to be a shared nursery nurse between the 2 classes too when my daughter was in there but I'm actually not sure there still is.

SatinHeart · 12/09/2022 10:42

20 children. 1 teacher 1 TA

Agadoodoododont · 12/09/2022 10:42

As an NQT I taught reception, no TA. I started the year with 16 but found it worked better when I had 20-24 in the class. The dynamics just seemed to work better with a slightly larger number.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 12/09/2022 10:42

In all schools I’ve taught in and my own kids’ schools, it was usually one teacher and one TA for 30 children.

Harridan1981 · 12/09/2022 10:43

2 teachers (job share) and 2 TAs.

Mama05070704 · 12/09/2022 10:43

My youngest’s class had 21 children, 1 teacher and 2 TA’s. It’s a single form school with approx. 20 children in each year - my eldest has 19 in his class. They can accommodate 30 children but it’s church school in a village, with 80% of children from service families, so numbers are generally low.
