Anyone else been disappointed with BBC's coverage of Queen's Death?

My major irritation was that Huw and Nicholas were still wittering about possible updates on the Queen's health whilst the screen showed the union jack at Buckingham Palace flying at half-mast! They had known for about 2 hours that she was dead so not like it should have come as a surprise.

I was on the phone to my parents who were listening to Sky News, I could hear the announcement and then the National Anthem was nearly finished before Huw even said "Buckingham Palace have just announced...." So they were at least a minute or so behind.

Other irritations:

  • the wearing of black ties prematurely
  • a lot of sound/picture interference
  • newsreaders losing their voice/stuttering and stammering.

But when was Huw supposed to change into the tie? He couldn't announce it in his pink tie and he didn't know exactly when the announcement would come. It was inevitable once the family landed at Aberdeen imho.

You don't want to announce anything before it's official, hence waiting for the flag.

BowiesJumper · 11/09/2022 21:39

No I think it’s been really good.

LizzieSiddal · 11/09/2022 21:40

The BBC are always a minute or two behind Breaking Stories. I think they must triple check everything before it goes on air. Ive actually stopped watching BBC news, I find Sky, ITV and channel 4 more informative and interesting.

readingatdawn · 11/09/2022 21:41

One WHOLE minute behind? Oh no. Best complain to Ofcom.

Oopsilot · 11/09/2022 21:41

BBC player is slightly ahead of BBC on my TV, several seconds even thought they are playing the same programme.
it was announced exactly at 6:30pm.
They had to wear black, they’d been preparing the public all afternoon and they could hardly do that in jazzy ties.
Of course they were tripping over their words, they didn’t have autocues, we’re speaking spontaneously and had to think what they were saying -could you do that word perfect for several hours?

Rapidtango · 11/09/2022 21:41
Hmm
Hugasauras · 11/09/2022 21:42

I did find it odd they were a bit behind on the death announcement. It flashed up on my phone and then there was quite a pause before Huw announced it.

SpoonyMcFace · 11/09/2022 21:44

I take it you have never lived in another country.

FrecklesMalone · 11/09/2022 21:44

I just wish they would allow more than 2 non royal news items. It's doing my head in. They should have a special royal news bit and leave the majority of us that don't care to hear some other news.

Justleaveitblankthen · 11/09/2022 21:51

Well they were showing the lowered flag above Buckingham Palace for quite a few moments, before heading back to Huw for his announcement.
Liz Truss was informed at 4.30pm and the official public announcement was 2 hours later.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/09/2022 21:52

unbelievable post!
Hmm

Snowiscold · 11/09/2022 21:54

How were you watching the TV? By aerial, cable, satellite, etc? It makes a difference to the delay. There’s always a delay, even in live tv - because it takes time to encode. It can be significant. Sometimes it’s deliberate- to stop any profanity, for example, going to air. I really notice the delay on the radio. I have an analogue and a digital radio and there’s about three seconds’ difference.,

Branster · 11/09/2022 21:54

The slight delay in announcement was odd.
DH was just commenting on flag at half mast and sudden gathering of public at the gates as if something was being announced (now we know it was the palace printed announcement being fixed to the gates) before the BBC commentator said the news. It was obvious to DH before they said it.

Branster · 11/09/2022 21:57

But I didn't find the overall coverage disappointing, no.

30not13 · 11/09/2022 22:01

I found the coverage today of the funeral cortege disappointing. Supposed to have followed it all but no coverage in several places.

Redglitter · 11/09/2022 22:03

It was announced on The RF Facebook page before the BBC. I couldn't believe it

EverydayMusing · 11/09/2022 22:03

The delay was so weird! I was on a video call with my brother in the US and he showed me their tv news breaking it about 3 minutes before the BBC did. So I found out via him via a country 6 hours behind ours. Crazy really!

WavePlant · 11/09/2022 22:05

Coverage has been too much.
we also said that the flag was lowered before they announced it.
Also the wearing black all day like it was coming was a bit off. But the face they had to waffle for 5 hours was done the best you can only keep saying the same things for hours

DoAllMyOwnStunts · 11/09/2022 22:07

Yeah, the "following the cortege" today had a lot of moments of lost feed.

They should have been wearing grey/dark blue ties during the afternoon and then changed into black ones during the playing of the Nat Anthem and montage of Queen's life ie straight after the announcement.

And the stuttering etc well frankly they've had years to practice. I'm not talking about Huw or anyone on the day. Just the crap since.

I'm staggered that there hasn't been more criticism of the wildly ridiculous scene of them talking as if she might still recover whilst we all stared at a flag at half-mast!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/09/2022 22:09

yes nicholas witchell followed protocol, blue tie, until the announcement

HeddaGarbled · 11/09/2022 22:09

And here is this 5 minutes’ completely made up complaint from a poster who wants to be aggrieved about something but all the good ones have already been taken. Don’t like this one? Don’t worry: there’ll be another one along in 5, 4, 3 …….

DoAllMyOwnStunts · 11/09/2022 22:10

@WavePlant interesting to hear the flag was lowered before the palace announced it. But Sky News had finished playing the National Anthem before Huw even started his announcement.

WaitingRoomBoredom · 11/09/2022 22:13

What I found annoying was that programmes billed as international news were still wittering on about the queen with a millisecond at the end for the huge news about Ukraine

Haudyourwheesht · 11/09/2022 22:18

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/09/2022 22:09

Nicholas Witchell's entire life has been leading up to this moment.

FourChimneys · 11/09/2022 22:19

I don't have a telly so can't really comment. But absolutely flabbergasted that anyone outside the RF actually care enough to notice these things.

I've heard a few minutes on R4 but we've largely switched channels for the time being to listen to things we are interested in.
