Anyone else been disappointed with BBC's coverage of Queen's Death?

My major irritation was that Huw and Nicholas were still wittering about possible updates on the Queen's health whilst the screen showed the union jack at Buckingham Palace flying at half-mast! They had known for about 2 hours that she was dead so not like it should have come as a surprise.

I was on the phone to my parents who were listening to Sky News, I could hear the announcement and then the National Anthem was nearly finished before Huw even said "Buckingham Palace have just announced...." So they were at least a minute or so behind.

Other irritations:

  • the wearing of black ties prematurely
  • a lot of sound/picture interference
  • newsreaders losing their voice/stuttering and stammering.

unbelievable post!
Hmm

Did you mean my post? 🤔
It's now common knowledge that the PM knew in advance of the official announcement and I think even Andrew Marrs mentioned so today.

Not sure why that's so unbelievable for you?
It's pretty much standard for matters as grave as this.

This is the utter peak batshittery we have reached
fuck I thought I'd seen some madness
but this really is the ultimate

WhackingPhoenix · 11/09/2022 22:27

Huw said he’d been rehearsing it for months in the mirror and got visibly choked up when he actually had to announce it Sad

And you’re complaining he didn’t do a good enough job? Have a word with yourself

Hobnobswantshernameback · 11/09/2022 22:27

OP you do realise you come across as somewhat .....unhinged?

Surtsey · 11/09/2022 22:34

I lost faith in the BBC live reporting of major events some time ago so I just have a quick look at the website now. Having said that, I don't know what the other news channels are like either these days, as I've been avoiding the news on television since I found out I was far less stressed out about life if I stayed away from it.

I found the coverage today of the funeral cortege disappointing. Supposed to have followed it all but no coverage in several places.

I was particularly annoyed they missed out the cortège going through Aberdeen completely when they cut to the proclamation. It had just reached Cults when they cut away and when they went back the cortège was about to cross the Dee and out of the city.

I was looking forward to her going past Queen's Cross and the statue of her Great, Great Granny.

Mochudubh · 11/09/2022 22:40

For anyone who was there, was Queen Vickie sans traffic cone?

LIZS · 11/09/2022 22:40

I think much of the footage today came from a single source in the helicopter whichever channel you followed with separate cameras on the ground.

lollipoprainbow · 11/09/2022 22:42

I tonight Huw did just fine.

MMAMPWGHAP · 11/09/2022 22:42

Yes, about 72 hours too much of it so far.

He didn’t though. He was talking about something else, looked confused like he’d be caught on the hop, read out the announcement quickly without any gravitas, sort of mumbled and then read it again quickly.
I said on here at the time they’d fucked up.
Meanwhile on ITV they had clearly done the announcement and had a full screen picture 1926 - 2022 no presenters and the national anthem. Much better, really conveyed the solemnity and let you absorb the information.

TempsPerdu · 11/09/2022 22:44

Coverage has been too much.
This, and…

What I found annoying was that programmes billed as international news were still wittering on about the queen with a millisecond at the end for the huge news about Ukraine

this are my only complaints. Could only take about ten minutes of the sycophancy fest on the BBC, and couldn’t care less what colour tie the broadcasters were wearing. The whole thing is massive overkill.

Otherwise… thank God for that Netflix subscription!

Womencanlift · 11/09/2022 22:45

Huw did absolutely marvellous compared to Mary Nightingale on ITV. That was so bad it was actually disrespectful.

She was faffing about, losing her way, looking for paper. Considering they have had a long time to rehearse this plus likely knew for a good while before 6:30 that it was coming it could have been more professional

Sky’s coverage has been really good. But as soon as Kay Burley inevitably appears I will be back with the BBC

JamMakingWannaBe · 11/09/2022 22:45

Agreed. For personal reasons I wanted to see her journey through Aberdeen. There is no reason why they could not have had a split screen, which they did during other parts of the day.

The commentary team today missed a whole field of tractors lined up in a Guard of Honour. It's like they were not watching the same images we were!

They should have had someone more knowledgeable about the geography and history of NE Scotland to explain to viewers what/where was being shown.

They passed Crathes Castle and Deeside Railway without comment.

I was impressed one presenter suggested a break in the commentary as the cortège drove through Ballater. That was appreciated.

margotsdevil · 11/09/2022 22:51

Agree with @JamMakingWannaBe regarding the coverage of the cortège - lack of basic prep by the presenters who seemed unsure as to which town/village was which along with poor pronunciation at tunes. Surely it's not too difficult to follow on a map!

FetlocksBlowingInTheWind · 11/09/2022 22:54

Really and truly, does it matter?

I was checking The Guardián and watching BBC at the same time and it flashed up on The Guardian a few seconds before Huw made the announcement.

But honestly, who cares? We pretty much all knew it was coming by then. The news itself was bigger than petty grievances and recriminations.

Alistair Bruce was very good on Sky particularly when they were driving between Balmoral and Aberdeen (potentially after that but I had to go out then). But he did grow up in Sutherland which explains why his knowledge would be good

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/09/2022 23:00

no, @Justleaveitblankthen
the op's post is unbelievable, to me

Mochudubh · 11/09/2022 23:04

The debate over the standard was embarrassing as well. It was obvious from the second the hearse exited Balmoral it was the Scottish standard.

CurrentHun · 11/09/2022 23:12

Not at all. The BBC’s coverage has been really good, appropriate and well informed throughout, informative and sensitive. They do national events like nobody else can or does. I don’t think we could have asked for more than that from the BBC. Their planning to make this all come about has paid off in how smoothly they swung into action as soon as the news of the Queen’s death broke. Your ‘complaints’ are about really tiny and petty things. The bigger picture of the BBC’s performance over the past few days is incredibly impressive. Their staff must have been dropping everything and replanning including childcare, planned medical stuff, holiday leave etc etc to get all hands on deck, I think it’s been public service broadcasting at it’s absolute best.

Cattenberg · 11/09/2022 23:13

I didn’t think Huw Edwards messed up the announcement at all. He repeated it more than once, but that seemed to be part of the plan.

However, I hated the inane waffle beforehand. Couldn’t the BBC have switched to other news until they were allowed to make the official announcement? I think that would have been much more dignified than speculating on the nature of the Queen’s illness or analysing paparazzi photos of the relatives travelling to Balmoral.

Topseyt123 · 11/09/2022 23:17

Don't see why this is even an issue.

I thought it was handled reasonably well. Most of the TV channels have now gone back to normal programs, which is good, as it can get too repetitive.

There will be events that will require covering and undivided attention I guess, and then the funeral itself.

Amortentia · 11/09/2022 23:20

Some of the commentary about Scotland or lack of knowledge caused me to raise my eyebrows so many times I’ve strained my eyes. Also, I thought the jumping between the cortège and then outside Buckingham Palace was really jarring. It’s seemed almost like a day out/party atmosphere in comparison.

WeAreTheHeroes · 11/09/2022 23:24

Redglitter · 11/09/2022 22:03

It was announced on The RF Facebook page before the BBC. I couldn't believe it

Are you being sarcastic?

It was patently obvious the Queen had died some time before it was officially announced, but I can't criticise the BBC's coverage. I've learned a lot from their reporting over the past three days. Very informative.

charabang · 11/09/2022 23:32

I've been very happy with BBC coverage and have had the TV on in the background since the announcement. When it gets to the highlights I'll break off and watch. I didn't mind the flicking back to London coverage today as it showed how whilst one monarch was being carried to their rest there was an excitement and anticipation of the new monarch. I thought that came over very well in the coverage.
