Anyone else been disappointed with BBC's coverage of Queen's Death?

My major irritation was that Huw and Nicholas were still wittering about possible updates on the Queen's health whilst the screen showed the union jack at Buckingham Palace flying at half-mast! They had known for about 2 hours that she was dead so not like it should have come as a surprise.

I was on the phone to my parents who were listening to Sky News, I could hear the announcement and then the National Anthem was nearly finished before Huw even said "Buckingham Palace have just announced...." So they were at least a minute or so behind.

Other irritations:

  • the wearing of black ties prematurely
  • a lot of sound/picture interference
  • newsreaders losing their voice/stuttering and stammering.

Personally could have done with a LOT less of it. Wall to wall coverage just turns into wittering on inanely and adds nothing. Could not care less that Sky beat BBC to the punch - does it matter?

I was shocked by the reporter in Windsor yesterday afternoon - I think it was Rianna Croxford. She was inarticulate and seemed totally out of her depth. Otherwise I think it has been really interesting and parts of it have been very moving.

I think the quality of coverage has been utterly brilliant with the strengths by far outweighing any minor criticisms such as those mentioned. With regard to the amount of coverage, we’re all different; some people are less interested and feel it’s been complete overkill, while others like me have watched as much as possible and been very appreciative and moved by it all. There’s no right or wrong, just individuals approaching all this from different angles.

Aww did your friend get to share the news on Facebook before you did?

Newnameoldme2022 · 12/09/2022 00:13

How would ‘knowing’ a few seconds / minute earlier make a difference to your life?

It doesn’t make her less dead.

CandyLeBonBon · 12/09/2022 00:18

Wtf?

Frith2013 · 12/09/2022 00:21

Yes.

It's so boring and repetitive. An hour a day would seem fine and normal people could just avoid that hour.

I found the coverage today of the funeral cortege disappointing. Supposed to have followed it all but no coverage in several places.

Six hours of watching a car drive down a road? That's a bit much!

It was a well known part of the plan that they'd be behind Sky. It happened like that in all the rehearsals too. If you wanted to be "first to know", you should have been watching Sky.

Not at all. The BBC’s coverage has been really good, appropriate and well informed throughout, informative and sensitive. They do national events like nobody else can or does. I don’t think we could have asked for more than that from the BBC. Their planning to make this all come about has paid off in how smoothly they swung into action as soon as the news of the Queen’s death broke. Your ‘complaints’ are about really tiny and petty things. The bigger picture of the BBC’s performance over the past few days is incredibly impressive. Their staff must have been dropping everything and replanning including childcare, planned medical stuff, holiday leave etc etc to get all hands on deck, I think it’s been public service broadcasting at it’s absolute best.

I disagree.
The Duke of Edinburghs death was done well. I can’t remember who did the announcement but it was clear, heartfelt, slightly teary and quite moving. I know everyone complained but I liked the blackout.
Although it was relatively unexpected that’s kind of the point if news? The BBC team are getting paid good money to deal with breaking and ongoing news stories. Re hashing her life story ad infinitum to fill time and inexperienced camera operators are poor in 2022. Commentators were interviewing each other at some points when they hadn’t found enough guests.

We had the misfortune of watching BBC news with subtitles on Saturday. They were hilariously bad... fortunately the bit we saw was the Walkabout by William et al. Queen was clean, and Princess Anne was Prince Hussan for example.

A newsreader choking over a major sad announcement? That I can't be upset by.

We have 2 TVs in this house. One on sky and one on freeview. Our sky box is always a few minutes behind the freeview box. In fact, we get different local news broadcasts and the TVs are back to back with each other in different rooms.

I was looking at the Royal announcement on twitter watching the news saying to my DH oh its been announced and it seemed ages watching them before they announced. Perhaps they were waiting for certain things to Q up ready to play? Or just being careful.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/09/2022 17:31

Who was that women just a few minutes ago talking to Huw? Saying how magical this all is, and that the Queen has made it magical. I wanted to throw something at the TV. She sounded stupid.

JamMakingWannaBe · 12/09/2022 20:49

I thought the Sky news coverage of the procession of the walk up the Royal Mile was better than BBC today (I switched half way).
