Do you lock your PC monitor in work when stepping away?

Anytime I’m stepping away from my monitor, for example, if I’m going on my tea break or nipping to the loo, I always lock my monitor.

I’d like to think my colleagues would be more mature, but I wouldn’t like the idea of them going on my account whilst I’m away and looking through my files and emails, some are confidential.

I don’t ever really see my colleagues lock their monitors when they step away, they always seem to just leave them open and anyone could access their accounts.

Do people actually lock their monitors or is it just me?

If the company has bothered to train their staff at all, then everyone should lock them. It’s like leaving your front door open

PinkBuffalo · 11/09/2022 19:56

Yes but it is a requirement where I work so it is automatic I have done it for so many years now I lock it even when working by my own!

PeterPomegranate · 11/09/2022 19:56

I do. There might be confidential information on the screen (I work in HR).

CaramelTwirl · 11/09/2022 19:57

No I can't say as I do.

sponsabillaries · 11/09/2022 19:58

Always. It is literally four key strokes.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 11/09/2022 19:58

Always here too.

Tanfastic · 11/09/2022 19:58

A requirement where I work too.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 11/09/2022 19:58

I used to when I worked in an office - it was policy and if you didn’t could lead to a warning. I wfh now so I don’t both anymore.

mrsmacmc · 11/09/2022 19:59

Yup! Even do it when working from home 😂 ingrained habit 🤷‍♀️

Whataretheodds · 11/09/2022 19:59

Yes i work in a regulated industry, it's drummed into us.

Only 2 keystrokes if you use windows key + L
!

bumpytrumpy · 11/09/2022 19:59

At 16yo I got a summer job in a bank. They trained me to lock my computer when leaving it, it's stuck with me forever and is habit now

OddBoots · 11/09/2022 19:59

'Windows' 'L' every time, it's just muscle memory now, even when WFH alone in the house.

PickySlackTastic · 11/09/2022 19:59

windows L

yes, always

Same. I WFH alone in the house, still lock it!

Always. It is literally four key strokes.

Always here too. Mandatory requirement..

But it's even quicker with keyboard shortcuts - windows key and L

loudbatperson · 11/09/2022 20:00

Yes we do, we also have auto locking based on proximity/attentiveness which employees can use if wanted, but they are not obligated to.

Leaving it unlocked is against our security policy and result in disciplinary measures.

sponsabillaries · 11/09/2022 19:58

Always. It is literally four key strokes.

It's only 2 - Windows key + L (but lower case)!

I always lock mine after working in compliance! And clear my desk at the end of the working day.

rnsaslkih · 11/09/2022 20:00

Some people are morons - I’ve worked in an office where someone went to the toilet and someone else then used the toilet person’s computer to write a stupid email to everyone in the company. So yes, lock it. You never know who is a stupid prat. DH worked in an office where the wallets were nicked from coat pockets (coat rack by a bunch of their desks).

JetBlackSteed · 11/09/2022 20:01

Yes, absolutely, and work settings will auto lock it after 10 mins of inactivity in case I don't.

megletthesecond · 11/09/2022 20:01

Yes, always. Even when it's still in view and I go to the printer.
Even when WFH and alone in the house.

nachoavocado · 11/09/2022 20:02

It should be drilled into everyone. It's common sense.

Discovereads · 11/09/2022 20:03

God yes, for us it was simply by pulling our chipped ID card out of the reader and the computer is locked down instantly. In fact it was a disciplinary if you forgot to do this and we were all remotely monitored by legit spy ware so they knew if you didn’t do it. This same spy ware also ensured we didn’t access any prohibited sites or spend our work day surfing the web, etc.

Always. It is literally four key strokes.

Use the Windows key and ‘L’ and it’s only 2 keys (doesn’t have to be a cap, I just wanted to distinguish from ‘I’).

also Windows key and ‘m’ closes all the windows if you just don’t want someone who comes over to talk to see what you have open. .

carefullycourageous · 11/09/2022 20:04

Yes every time, in the office and WFH.

SunnySusie · 11/09/2022 20:04

Always! Work in schools and it's negligent not to, with all the stuff you have access to.
