Do you lock your PC monitor in work when stepping away?

Anytime I’m stepping away from my monitor, for example, if I’m going on my tea break or nipping to the loo, I always lock my monitor.

I’d like to think my colleagues would be more mature, but I wouldn’t like the idea of them going on my account whilst I’m away and looking through my files and emails, some are confidential.

I don’t ever really see my colleagues lock their monitors when they step away, they always seem to just leave them open and anyone could access their accounts.

Do people actually lock their monitors or is it just me?

Yep, even WFH alone/with DH I do it.

My colleague doesn't, so when I'm in the office and he's left his desk I always type a daft message on his screen.

There is no requirement to do it, as we don't work commercially sensitive information really, but I do it with everything.

Lock my phone with the side button when I put it down, lock my computer, have the house doors locked at all times etc. Etc

Tallulasdancingshoes · 11/09/2022 20:20

Yes, always. I’m a teacher so we’re required to.

shinynewapple22 · 11/09/2022 20:20

It would be disciplinary if we didn't do that - even working from home I do it.

Fifipop185 · 11/09/2022 20:21

Yes every time. Used to work in a bank so it's habit even when wfh alone in the house.

autienotnaughty · 11/09/2022 20:22

No there's only me and manager and we have exact same access and no confidential info

Noteverybodylives · 11/09/2022 20:23

I have to where I work but if I didn’t then I would trust my colleagues not to do anything.

In fact if I had to rush out they’d probably lock my screen for me.

AdriannaP · 11/09/2022 20:25

Always. It was a requirement in a job I had 10 years ago so I am surprised people leave their screens on.

Dazedandconfused10 · 11/09/2022 20:26

You don't even need to use a keyboard shortcut on a mac, set up a hot corner and it locks when the cursor goes there.

SkirridHill · 11/09/2022 20:32

Yeah I lock mine. It's a requirement but I've always done it wherever I work. At my current place, some of the staff would 100% read my emails.

Twizbe · 11/09/2022 20:36

Yes. Last company I worked for it was a requirement due to client confidentiality.

Quite often new grads would forget so we'd instant message their friends (never anyone 'serious') with something silly or flip their screen upside down to make the point.

neighboursmustliveon · 11/09/2022 20:42

I used to when I shared an office but I have my own office which I lock when I leave so i don't bother anymore.

FreezyFreezy · 11/09/2022 20:42

If it's a login that I know, then yes.

I'm a supply teacher and some schools don't have a dedicated supply teacher account so I often have to get another staff member's to log on for me in order to access the planning and resources. This means that if it times out, or I lock the computer, I have to disturb them to come and get me back on again!

justasoul · 11/09/2022 20:47

I didn’t think I would need it once I started my own business but my DD will rickroll any computer left unlocked… it has always been a requirement wherever I worked though.

Ponderingwindow · 11/09/2022 20:49

Ours Autolock after a very brief amount of time.

WeAllHaveWings · 11/09/2022 20:55

We are told we should lock everytime we leave our desk and most people do.

We have recently been given new laptops with windows facial recognition. They notice when someone comes back to your desk and then unlock if they recognise your face and dont need to unlock with password any more!

SatinHeart · 11/09/2022 20:57

Yes, it's a requirement where I work and everyone is told this as part of induction.

Work computers also auto lock after quite a short period of inactivity.

HideTheCroissants · 11/09/2022 20:59

Absolutely. Work in school office and it is what we are supposed to do. On our PCs it is two keys to lock and re entry of our password to unlock. Some of the info I’m privy too should not be seen by teaching or other support staff so it is essential that nothing can be seen when I am away from my desk.

Auntieobem · 11/09/2022 20:59

Yes always lock it, work for nhs

BobMortimersPocketMeat · 11/09/2022 21:03

I work from home except for a couple of days a month. I lock mine whenever I’m away from my desk in the office - we all were trained to do so in any situation where someone else could have access to our computers when unattended. Ours also lock automatically after a certain period of inactivity.

thecatsthecats · 11/09/2022 21:04

Yes, even though I work from home. The cat can't be trusted to enter any old shit.

And partly in a pass-agg fashion, because my employer keeps ignoring all the cyber security measures I try to bring in.

WhatWouldHopperDo · 11/09/2022 21:09

Yep, if Im
in the office or if anyone else is at home when I wfh.

Our organisation recently set all our laptops to auto lock after 2 minutes of inactivity because people kept leaving their desks and not locking them. It’s really annoying!

PatientlyWaiting21 · 11/09/2022 21:42

Always otherwise a rogue email is always sent to someone senior!!!

Libertyqueen · 11/09/2022 21:45

No. But my colleagues are nice.

LoobyDop · 11/09/2022 21:46

Yes, always. Years ago when I worked on a service desk we’d always play silly tricks if someone left their machine unlocked, like change absolutely everything- fonts, windows, desktop- white, so that the user couldn’t see anything or work out why not. Or send an offensive resignation mail. Very childish, but you learned pretty quickly.

Kualma · 11/09/2022 21:47

Yes. I always do. I lock my computer when going for lunch and popping to the loo.
