Do you lock your PC monitor in work when stepping away?

Anytime I’m stepping away from my monitor, for example, if I’m going on my tea break or nipping to the loo, I always lock my monitor.

I’d like to think my colleagues would be more mature, but I wouldn’t like the idea of them going on my account whilst I’m away and looking through my files and emails, some are confidential.

I don’t ever really see my colleagues lock their monitors when they step away, they always seem to just leave them open and anyone could access their accounts.

Do people actually lock their monitors or is it just me?

Windows+L every time. And log out of the printer as well

Mandatory, we deal with some pretty sensitive stuff. And a disciplinary potentially. Along with letting anyone tailgate you onto a site.

Yes, even though I work alone in a room with a key coded door - it’s just drummed in from years of doing it.

Mochudubh · 11/09/2022 20:07

Yes, in case anyone comes past and clocks I'm on Mumsnet.

Cuddlywuddlies · 11/09/2022 20:07

yes! I work in a highly regulated industry we have to!!

Tangled123 · 11/09/2022 20:08

Yes, it’s a habit I picked up during the days I worked in call centres. No office I’ve worked in has ever told me to do it though, and I do payroll.

LadyLolaRuben · 11/09/2022 20:09

You are responsible for your login and therefore cannot guarantee what will happen when not you're not at it. I worked somewhere where an employee used another colleague's login to tell a director what they thought of him. Guess who got sacked? The person who hadn't locked their PC - for breach of data protection and confidentiality

Frogium · 11/09/2022 20:09

At the office, not really. At home, yes, my cat recently finished and sent an email I was in the middle of when I was getting a cup of coffee. He has also deleted meetings.

ProfYaffle · 11/09/2022 20:10

Yes, I lock it every time. I work in HR so have to be careful.

girlmom21 · 11/09/2022 20:11

Yep. It's a requirement of the ISO accreditation and if you're spot checked you can easily lose that. If we did we'd lose our biggest client and we'd all lose our jobs so really not worth the risk.

Ragged · 11/09/2022 20:12

rarely. You'd have to dig for a long time in my files to find anything sensitive.

This is hilarious. I’m just picturing your cat replacing the meetings with “nap time” blocks on your schedule 😊

Crabwoman · 11/09/2022 20:12

Yes absolutely. I work on items of commercial sensitivity and HR are allocated the next bank of desks so we have to.

Even when I WFH I do it, as it is ingrained into me.

sponsabillaries · 11/09/2022 20:13

I am obviously old skool. Ctrl+alt+del then enter!

CoffeeWithCheese · 11/09/2022 20:14

I'd have to have my work IT access set up first! (But yes when they ever get onto it)

Woolandwonder · 11/09/2022 20:15

Not at home (no-one else around) but always in work automatically, but nhs so obviously mandatory.

imnotapensioneryet · 11/09/2022 20:16

Yes, always.

DontKeepTheFaith · 11/09/2022 20:16

Yes. I work in my own office but always try to lock the computer and shut the office when I leave.

I am NHS so patient information could be accessible.

Its just a shame it takes me average 3 attempts to enter my password correctly to get back in😬 Takes me even longer if someone is Skyping me and I know I’m against the clock🤣

Twospaniels · 11/09/2022 20:16

Yes absolutely I do! I work for the NHS.

Octomore · 11/09/2022 20:16

Everywhere I've worked, this has been a requirement - usually covered by the relevant data protection / acceptable use policy.

MumofSpud · 11/09/2022 20:17

The last (open plan) office I worked in, it was a disciplinary offence if you didn't !
Now I work in a school,it is common sense!

Chattycathydoll · 11/09/2022 20:18

Yes, and I lock my office door when I go to the bathroom (not when I go to the kitchen, it’s opposite so I’d see if anyone went in.)

I have to keep hard copies of some very sensitive records, and there are non-staff members who walk up and down the hallway where my office is, so I’m very careful about keeping it secure

JacquelineCarlyle · 11/09/2022 20:19

PinkBuffalo · 11/09/2022 19:56

Yes but it is a requirement where I work so it is automatic I have done it for so many years now I lock it even when working by my own!

This is exactly the same for me too!

Throughabushbackwards · 11/09/2022 20:19

Yes because of safeguarding.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 11/09/2022 20:19

Yes we have to

Octomore · 11/09/2022 20:19

It's pretty slack for it not to be required by company policy!
