My daughter would love to travel down to London for this, but time is somewhat limited due to working hours. What day / night would be best to travel bearing in mind queues. Obviously Day 1 might be the busiest? Night time?

Why on earth would you bother??

Not in the spirit

What a miserable, mean-spirited comment @ChagSameachDoreen

OP, I'm afraid I can't answer your question but Ireally wish I could go to pay my respects.

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 10/09/2022 22:16

I would imagine that the early evening might be best if you don't mind eating dinner (sandwiches) in a queue OP. It's what they advise at Legoland, but would seem to fit this situation too!

Sparklingbrook · 10/09/2022 22:17

Someone on here was speculating queues of 7 miles so with travelling too it doesn't seem feasible.

mynameiscalypso · 10/09/2022 22:19

Weren't people queuing for 24 hours to see the Queen Mother?

scissorsandsellotape · 10/09/2022 22:21

Someone on the telly was suggesting that the queue was going to start at tower bridge

LePigeon · 10/09/2022 22:24

Slightly morbid but I thought bodies had to be kept very cold. I don't understand how they can keep a body sitting there in a coffin for four whole days? And travelling in Procession throughout the country? Maybe I've misunderstood the proceedings but it makes me wonder if it'll be an empty coffin, no one would know either way.

Maybe she isn't really dead, didn't want to be seen to abdicate and so faked her own death. Though probably just embalmed.

😂😂😂

EducatingArti · 10/09/2022 22:34

Royals are buried in lead lined coffins which are completely sealed
They are also going to move the D of E coffin from the vault in Windsor Chapel so that they can both be in the same tomb!

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 10/09/2022 22:42

I think you'll find the first day may be the quietest. Over the hours and days more people hear about it (especially with social media) and decide they only have one chance etc so go. First day as it opens will be the quietest. Still busy but the best of it i'd recon.

Sparklingbrook · 10/09/2022 22:43

I mean TBF the coffin with a flag draped over it, that everyone queues for hours to file past could be completely empty and nobody would be any the wiser.

SouthOfFrance · 10/09/2022 22:45

Will it even be the real coffin do you think? Or just a replica? Wondering if the real coffin will be kept elsewhere, like they do with important museum pieces.

After posters were so nice and helpful, and worried about you, on another thread...well, I suppose we know not to bother again.

Sparklingbrook · 10/09/2022 22:49

Do you just literally walk quickly past it? I assume no phones or cameras would be allowed in or there would be selfies etc.😬

Snowiscold · 10/09/2022 22:50

The middle of the night? It’s 23 hours a day, anyway. But it’ll be a long wait of many hours.

I don’t think anyone would be walking quickly - that wouldn’t be respectful.

RoobarbandCustud · 10/09/2022 22:52

I've booked a train to London arriving late Saturday morning, a hotel and train home on Sunday teatime. Hope we'll get to file past, but accept may not work out. There is a suggestion they might use timed sessions (as they would have done had the Q died in Covid times). The weekend trains to and from London from my NW town sold out late afternoon. Reasonable priced hotels ditto. Good luck OP.

JanglyBeads · 10/09/2022 22:54

But it's not a comparable event to Legoland, in that it's not aimed at families. Early evening will surely be lots of adults going after work?

Snowiscold · 10/09/2022 22:56

To be fair, I wouldn’t be surprised if they do end up offering timed slots- it would be unmanageable otherwise.

Sparklingbrook · 10/09/2022 22:57

I don’t think anyone would be walking quickly - that wouldn’t be respectful.

But they won't want anyone dawdling or lingering because they need to keep the line moving to get the seven miles of people in and out presumably.

Yes, no dawdling either

The body will be completely sealed in a lead-lined coffin. Bodies will decompose and release horrible smells if there is oxygen and warmth available for these processes. Sealed lead coffin will mean minimal oxygen and whatever decomposition happens won't matter as nothing can escape anyway. Embalming is unnecessary.

happyinherts · 10/09/2022 23:05

Given it's an unprecedented situation, I think we might be seriously underestimating the queues and crowds on public transport. Don't think it's feasible. Interesting thoughts though, there just isn't a good time, I don't think.
