My daughter would love to travel down to London for this, but time is somewhat limited due to working hours. What day / night would be best to travel bearing in mind queues. Obviously Day 1 might be the busiest? Night time?

OP posts:

Sparklingbrook WTF indeed. People are taking leave of their senses.

Listening to LBC, and apparently people have already started queuing. Utter madness.

How's that going to work? Confused

I'm not hanging out of my front door tonight. i'll probably be at the pub.

So it's just been confirmed, lying in state opening for the public on 14th september from 5pm. It's going to be absolutely chaotic. I've taken steps to delete my twitter account because I really could do with not getting fired or arrested.

Bet twitter will be in meltdown at that news. Crying emojis everywhere.

Southwest12 · 12/09/2022 14:38

They've also said today that people can only take one small bag in, theough the normal airport security style checks. So anyone that takes a chair, or anything to keep warm won't be able to take it in.

AuntieMarys · 12/09/2022 14:41

I reckon they're trying to put people off.

FourChimneys · 12/09/2022 14:45

Just read that we are encouraged to do a minute's silence at 8pm on Sunday, and considering standing on the doorstep to do it.

Performative mawkishnes at its finest.

No thanks.

It'll be like Glastonbury when everyone leaves their tent and rubbish behind.

A 24-hour plus queue, moving slowly, slowly, slowly towards an underwhelming sight is so extremely British, though. Very on brand.

britneyisfree · 12/09/2022 15:13

I wouldn't go to something like this anyway tbh but having read it... sounds dreadful. I assume they want to put as many people off as possible

I'd want at least a sticker as a souvenir, or maybe a t shirt.

oh god, I just googled and you're right:

"A spokesperson for Prime Minister Liz Truss said: ‘At 8pm on Sunday 18 September, the night before the state funeral, there will be a one-minute silence where the public are invited to come together and observe a national moment of reflection to mourn and reflect on the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II.
‘The silence can be marked privately at home on your own or with friends and neighbours, out on your doorstep or street with neighbours, or at any locally arranged community events and vigils.’"

I’d bet my hat you won’t need to go too far from Westminster Abbey before you see an opportunist selling something like that!

FourChimneys · 12/09/2022 15:46

NoSquirrels and Sparklingbrook "I shuffled past the queen's coffin".
Like the "I've had my Covid jab" ones (of which I thoroughly approve btw).

SouperNoodle · 12/09/2022 16:53

I've just seen this on twitter.
Considering people are already camping, do you think security may ask them to remove their tents?

They said the queues would be up to 20hours. This whole thing is really bewildering to me. I really just cannot understand it.

Your numerous comments on mn following the death of the Queen make your disdain for her quite clear - that’s fine, obviously you are entitled to your views.

However, regarding the lying-in-state, maybe if someone died whose views align with yours - say Jedward, or Billy Bragg or Jeremy Corbyn - then surely you would wish to attend their lying-in-state, even though the queues may be 20+ hours?

Sparklingbrook · 12/09/2022 17:13

I have been terribly upset when some of my heroes have died, people that have made great music or tv or whatever, that I felt a connection with. But I could not have queued up for 20-30 hours to file past their coffin.

It's possible or they'll have a huge tent village on their hands if they don't.

britneyisfree · 12/09/2022 17:28

@Andante57 I love Beyoncé. Like honestly adore her.

I would not queue 20 hours to see her lying in state no. I can't think of anything that I'd queue that long for tbh.

My aunt tried out for X factor and I went with her one year. The queue honestly stressed me out so much I couldn't ever watch the show again without remembering how horrid it was!

VladmirsPoutine · 12/09/2022 17:51

@Andante57 No. I cannot think of a single person for whom I'd gladly stand around for 20 hours with flask in hand wrapped up in scarves only to spend a few seconds walking past their coffin. Not a single person. Perhaps my parents or siblings but then again I doubt the wait would be 20 hours. That said, yes I am bewildered by the whole thing and yes I do have disdain, this is mainly rooted in being from the commonwealth and seeing how the lives of my grandparents were torn apart. So I find it all rather distasteful, I have relatives who were chained, assaulted and put in concentration camps in the name her maj, so forgive me if a picture of a marmalade sandwich doesn't move me to tears.

Andante57 · 12/09/2022 17:57

Vladmirs judging by your thousands of posts over the years, you enjoy complaining about the royal family. Who would you complain about if they were sacked?

rockbottombird · 12/09/2022 17:59

I went to see the queen mother and I'd say I waited about 3/4 hours in total which I thought was Ok. I'm going again on Friday evening, I'll join the queue with my flask of tea and some sandwiches and my trusty camping chair and wait my turn. Good luck OP, it will be worth the wait.

Are you prepared to do the full 30 hours whatever? That's such a long time, all through the night too.

What will you do with your camping chair when you get to the door?

workiskillingme · 12/09/2022 18:11

Why on Earth would someone consider taking a 4 month old to be out in the cold for hours on end? FML people are mental at times- please tell me how it will be of any benefit to a baby?
