If you're considering it, please go. Although very crowded today, it was a sombre but lovely atmosphere. I'm pleased I was able to see history in motion first hand.

I hopped on the tube the evening of her death and went to Buckingham Palace. I went alone as my daughters are both away/elsewhere and I just wanted to go without meeting anyone. It was impromptu and I am very, very glad I went do mark her passing. It as good to be amongst others reflecting upon this seismic event.

Mywatchis · 10/09/2022 22:20

let's not be twats, we are living an entire history PhD in the space of a week. If you don't recognise that, you probably need to have a wee look at yourself.

Brilliant comment, why do people have to pretend that they're oh so cool and feign misunderstanding? You just look like, yes, twats

tectonicplates · 11/09/2022 07:56

If Green Park is closed then fine, but it is not a "dreadful station". 🤔

tapdancingmum · 11/09/2022 08:09

We are going today. Where it says the roads are closed on the map is this just to cars and you can still walk up them?

We are coming in to Marylebone a d I was thinking of hopping on the tube to Victoria and walking up. Is this a better choice than green park?

elizaregina · 11/09/2022 08:12

People want to go because there is an atmosphere and feeling.
It's a sense of being part of something and something incredibly historical!

headstone · 11/09/2022 08:23

I can’t understand why anyone would want to be a pleb in the crowd, but each go their own.

alrightfella · 11/09/2022 08:25

@tapdancingmum yes Victoria is the best option, you can walk in front of the palace from that side.

sunglassesonthetable · 11/09/2022 08:28

I cannot fathom why you would bother.

I'm sure you can. God some people are painful.

LadyGAgain · 11/09/2022 08:35

I'm going today to lay flowers as it feels for me the right thing to do. Thanks for the tips on access. I think I'll walk from Waterloo.

They weren't letting anyone onto The Mall from Green Park. I came in via Embankment, and walked from there.

As you walk towards the Palace, it did get congested, but it kept moving. I was able to see the tributes and flowers left.
May not be everyone's cup of tea, but it felt important to me to be there.

It sounds very interesting and momentous. This is history in the making. Wish I could go.

You can stay at home and be a pleb then, @headstone, and let others get on with it in public.

headstone · 11/09/2022 09:13

Happy to be a pleb at home, can’t stand all the fawning. I understand though that others enjoy doing it.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 11/09/2022 09:13

I can't fathom why people go to watch F1 or Glastonbury or buy new pyjamas on Christmas Eve but I don't go on threads and bitch about their choices. Maybe give that a try.

I can’t understand why anyone would want to be a pleb in the crowd, but each go their own.

Same reason people attend concerts or sporting events with 10,000s on the crowd.l and can only see the people as tiny dots

Same reason people go to racing events and see a car pass by every 4 minutes....

To be part of it.

Im jealous you're in London, i love London

headstone · 11/09/2022 09:32

00100001, I’ve never done any those other things either as I don’t like big crowds. Don’t think it’s the same as participating in online chat though.

Bottomofthepileasusual · 11/09/2022 09:38

I'd love to take DD but travelling from S Wajes would be a ball ache

lollipoprainbow · 11/09/2022 09:43

Might go next Saturday, I really feel the urge to be in London at some point !

Festoonlights · 11/09/2022 09:45

We are going to the funeral procession for sure. I want to go and pay my respects to the most iconic woman in the world.

I am taking dc to the coronation, which is so exciting!

steppon · 11/09/2022 09:48

On Friday I was going to meet family for dinner so deviated to Green Park (was open then) & walked down to the palace & onto Big Ben & Waterloo. As others have said it through an historical perspective & thought it was lovely the fact there was no traffic.

The point, I suppose is, you wanted to be part of this conversation. And that's ok. Even though you're just "a pleb in the crowd"

People want to be part of the passing of the Queen... And that's okay...

RailwaySleeper · 11/09/2022 10:13

I always feel London has quite a strange and distinctive atmosphere at moments like this, a bit like a collective mood - I remember it being like this when Princess Diana died (a bit stunned and emotional, for a whole week until the funeral) and during the 2012 Olympics (a bit giddy and unusually friendly). All the history of the buildings suddenly seems to leap out at you; I kept thinking of all the people who'd stood where I was standing, over the centuries, and would stand in the future. I had a real urge to go and not do anything particular, just be there.

It's interesting, though, how things have changed in the last decade with the internet, and lockdown, and general anxiety - I think people are much more 'bubbled' than they were even ten years ago.

headstone · 11/09/2022 10:13

001000001, I can’t still see the connection. I’m having a conversation with you. I’m m not stuck in a crowd of thousands desperate to get a view of Queen Camila.
