New job - famous (ish) husband - want to work anonymously - name change question

WantToWorkAnonymously · 10/09/2022 13:28

So my husband is well known locally (politics), I want to apply for a new job (in the state sector) but don’t want everyone asking about him/moaning about him to me/thinking about me in a certain way because of links to him.

I want to revert to my maiden name before I apply, can I do this? Can I just give them my maiden name but my bank account has my married name will that matter?
And my NI, forms of ID (passport, driving licence) are in my married name, assume this may cause a problem?

I don’t want to abandon my married name totally, just for work purposes to remain as anonymous as I can for as long as I can - won’t lie if someone asks me directly!

Just want to be just me to start with.

You can use your maiden name and then your birth certificate and passport (as proof of maiden name).

They would need your married name for checks as others say and also references.
If applying for a public sector job then make sure you read the competencies.

Completely understand your desire to apply as you as people are more then just the partner/wife of X person.
Good luck 👍

I don’t blame you Carrie. I wouldn’t want to be associated with him either.

Literally spat my tea out ....!
😂😂

😆😆😆😆

CallMeLinda · 10/09/2022 17:02

My MP has an unusual surname and people would definitely have opinions on them😂
If you get the job you would have to show all your documents etc, but at that point you can say you go by your maiden name for work purposes.

theremustonlybeone · 10/09/2022 17:02

well he must be well known if your worried about using your married name...hmm if its not Johnson it is likely Starmer....change your name

My professional name is my maiden name. My legal name is different.

payroll obviously know. The fleet manager for car insurance knows. HR knows for background checks.

No one else knows.

But if he is involved in politics, even if people don’t know who you are, you may come across someone moaning about him anyway.

RosesandMoonshine · 10/09/2022 17:10

Honestly outside of the weird, tabloidy little universe that is MN no one really cares Grin

Trainham · 10/09/2022 17:11

I use my maiden name at work but all payslips etc in other name. On CV just say known as. Nobody at works questions it .

ThreeRingCircus · 10/09/2022 17:19

Apply using maiden name. When it comes to contract and HR forms, explain to HR that these are in your married surname but you use your maiden name professionally. No one else will need to know. I’ve used my maiden name professionally for 20 years, only HR people have any clue I have a married name!

Do this OP. Apply using your maiden name and just tell HR at the point of showing any ID/signing contracts. I work in HR and quite a few women at my workplace are known as their maiden names professionally, nobody other than HR (for background checks/payroll purposes) would have any idea.

He looked so sexy on the beach recently🥴

Glitteratitar · 10/09/2022 17:34

I use my maiden name professionally for the exact same reason.

Its only an issue when HR can’t figure out how to ensure my records have my legal name but my emails, etc show my maiden name.

WantToWorkAnonymously · 10/11/2022 16:25

To update, I applied in my maiden name, sent HR my marriage certificate and all seemed fine.
had the interview, and offered the job, yey!

but, their system cannot cope with the ID checks as I have no ID in my maiden name - should’ve kept at least one thing.

So, now having to change my application to my married name.
This sorts the ID issues out.

If I want to change it to my maiden name I can, as long as I have changed one form of ID.

I thought driving licence might be easy so got the D1 form, but I need to show a deed poll or decree nisi to change back.

So not sure what to do now. What’s the easiest form of ID to change without actually getting divorced?
Tempted.
Kidding.
Maybe.

I have recently started with the ccouncil and there wwasa question, name you like to be known as. Just put it in there.

WantToWorkAnonymously · 10/11/2022 16:34

Thanks for that, hopefully I’ll get that option at some point, I haven’t seen it yet.

I have an ID appointment in person next week, maybe they can reassure me about a ‘known as’ name.

Do you actually have to go through all the faff though?

Could you have all the HR stuff done in your married name, Jane Smith for example so that it's easily trackable for them, ties in with the bank, ID, whatever.

Then on your first day, just introduce yourself as Jane Jones and ask for your email address to be set up in that name?

I've worked with loads of people in the past that we've all known as Jane Smith and then one day I've caught sight of something official and their name has been completely different, I don't think it's that unusual.

slowquickstep · 10/11/2022 17:00

Yes you should be able to do that, just be honest of you get the job.

ImNotOnTwitterButMySupportGoldfinchTweets · 10/11/2022 17:16

Are they not accepting either marriage certificate or birth certificate as proof? That seems strange. Your birth name is a legal name.

WantToWorkAnonymously · 10/11/2022 17:39

I’m hopeful that when it comes to the actual job I can introduce myself as Name Maiden-name.

I can take my birth cert next week too, I think it’s a case of using an automated online system that doesn’t allow for various choices to be made.

I’ll keep asking and see where I end up.

I worked in child protection social work for years using my maiden name but I kept my driving license in that name too.

WantToWorkAnonymously · 10/11/2022 18:15

I wish I’d left something like my driving licence in my maiden name but DH wasn’t an MP then and I had no clue about keeping my identity separate.

@Avocadocream 😂😂😂😂👍

Kitfish · 10/11/2022 18:59

I applied for my current job in my maiden name and am known by my maiden name at work. ID checks, passport, bank account all in my married name - it was a non issue. Employers understand that it is common for married women to keep their maiden name when they work.

SeaCreatureCool · 10/11/2022 19:27

You need to be careful of conflict of interest - your DH will have to publicly declare it if you are doing the nurse / Health Secretary type of example so regardless you will be rumbled via that.

Also, DBS checks allow for two names - it asks other names you have been known by (and specifically mentions maiden names)

ThatPirateLady · 10/11/2022 22:07

Passport. You can have a listed alias on it.

Ellmau · 11/11/2022 07:53

Congratulations on getting the job!
