There will be a bank holiday on day of Queens funeral. The article still doesn’t say the day.

Imagine the chaos if hospitality and retail close like they do at xmas

JanuaryParty · 10/09/2022 17:36

If it's a bank holiday surely schools will be shut?

oreobiscitz · 10/09/2022 17:37

@JanuaryParty

I guess so

They should have made it Sunday

carefullycourageous · 10/09/2022 17:39

Yes I think schools will be shut as it has now been declared a BH.

If it doesn't warrant a BH the state is saying 'it is not a big deal'. Clearly the state's view is it is a big deal therefore it has to be a BH.

Please dont close schools: dd just starting next week

It's been a looooooong summer

Dd hasn’t started yet either, 19th her first full day. But I believe they will be closed

Bad timing but I expected it I suppose

The DfE has already stated that schools will close, like in all other Bank Holidays. As will many other businesses, not just schools.

Of course schools will be closed if it’s a bank holiday.

TisnotI · 10/09/2022 17:45

For clarity, Scottish Public holidays are not all on the same days across the Country, different authorities can have different local holidays. For example, the autumn holiday in Aberdeenshire was 5 September but Aberdeen City's isn't till the 26th.

People from outwith Scotland can find this confusing but I prefer it to the English tradition as the whole country isn't heading for the coast on the same day and when it's a PH in your area, you can pop over to the next LA area and everything is open.

Flowerytoe · 10/09/2022 17:48

So annoying. I work self employed, my son's nursery will likely be closed, I won't be able to work but I'll still have to pay the usual fees!!

This will be the first state funeral held in this country since 1965 (Winston Churchill), do you honestly think it should be on what is a working day for a lot of people? Anyone in retail or hospitality will regularly work on a Sunday

gratefulheart · 10/09/2022 17:50

Will it be a yearly bank holiday?

No.

Better to have a bit of negative PR than lose all the money they would otherwise get. Nobody is going to boycott Legoland next year because they dared to open on the day of the Queen's funeral (as an example).

I absolutely think people will boycott attractions that stay open.

itsgettingweird · 10/09/2022 18:07

Last year we broke up a day early as schools were "owed" a BH due to jubilee being in half term.

This was an extra BH? I know they moved a BH day but I'm sure we gained 1 extra?

So does this mean schools won't have to add a day? I can imagine it'll trigger 100's of holiday request forms if we tack one onto the end of term!

oreobiscitz · 10/09/2022 18:24

@Iamanunsafebuilding

Yes. I (honestly) do think that

Abraxan · 10/09/2022 18:24

It'sgettingweird.

They moved the late May bank holiday to the Friday (normally Monday) and added one extra BH on the Thursday, creating the 4 day Jubilee weekend.

The additional BH was in the school holidays (the other one always is anyway) so schools were told to take an extra day at a point in the school year which suited them. We tacked ours into that jubilee weekend. Friend's school added theirs to the Christmas holiday. Another friend's school added it to the summer holiday.

Fair enough. Irrelevant but fair

oreobiscitz · 10/09/2022 18:28

I really don't need a day off to watch a funeral on telly with a small child jumping around.

I imagine there's loads of people who would like to visit legoland on the 19th. I may check it out

carefullycourageous · 10/09/2022 18:31

gratefulheart · 10/09/2022 17:50

Will it be a yearly bank holiday?

No, people only die once!

swedex · 10/09/2022 18:41

If legoland shut the day after she died there's no way it'll be open on her funeral!

tigger1001 · 10/09/2022 19:04

Didn't matter what day it was on, it will be on a working day for lots of people. Declaring a bank holiday doesn't change that.

I'm guessing due to its location, it would be shut, irrespective of whether it wanted to out of respect.

It seems as if there’s pressure that they do. In which case, since most of the staff are on zero hours contracts they’ll lose out financially at short notice, as
they almost certainly won’t be paid for it. I don’t see why it can’t just be personal choice to remember / commemorate by taking the day off.

MinnieMountain · 10/09/2022 21:31

Well that’s annoying. I’m a republican and I don’t work on Mondays anyway. Still, DS will enjoy his day off school.

Bagzzz · 10/09/2022 21:56

I think it’s appropriate but might mean I don’t get my Covid jab booked for that day.
