Which way would you vote in a referendum on the monarchy?

Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

change but not abolish (which really can't be done since they will forever have their blood line)

waltzingparrot · 10/09/2022 01:47

Definitely keep

A constitutional monarchy has proved itself to be a very stabilising for our nation.

Booklover3 · 10/09/2022 01:49

Now the Queens gone…

Abolish.

Most certainly keep. The immediate Royal Family offer good service to the country and provide a unifying presence that characterises our national identity.

Featuredcreature · 10/09/2022 02:04

I'd vote keep tbh, despite not agreeing. Too much division and negative shit right now. We undoubtedly be left with a terrible "president"

SiobhanSharpe · 10/09/2022 02:11

OP, I think you should ask this question in a year or so, emotions are running high at the moment.

GuyMontag · 10/09/2022 02:18

I genuinely hope that this monarch going will be an opportunity for us to take a good look at ourselves as a country particularly in global terms and maybe wake us up from our collective delusion that things are ok. She was a great head of state and I think that's kind of buffered us a bit.

We have a barely functioning health system, we're paid fuck all, we're governed by an almost feudal elite who fuck off on holiday and squabble amongst themselves when there's any real work to be done, we're about to put ourselves in hock for our heat and light and pay it back ... with what, exactly? In a country with no industry to speak of, resources owned by the international upper class, where the average age is 40, the birth rate is below population replacement, where we've removed ourselves from the only trading bloc we had access to in a world with rising Southern powers who are profoundly disinterested in us other than in the entrenched wealthy players' personal investments, we are in no position to rise from the ashes as we did briefly after WWII. If our next millionaire PM's plans come through and we keep on with this king and the entire bent politicking we have we will just be debtors consoling ourselves by looking at the pomp of monarchy and giving our labour towards unpayable sums throughout our disenfranchised lives.

Getting rid of the monarchy wouldn't solve all the other problems of entrenched inequality but it might enable us to have a clearer idea of how we've been sold and give us a bit of fucking energy to do something, anything, about it.

President Blair?
President Johnson?

Abolish the monarchy and the Church of England, take the land, property and money into public ownership.

This 100%

I’d like to believe that people don’t really think that some are born above others.

Keep. I don’t think they’re above us.

GuyMontag · 10/09/2022 02:33

People always use that argument.

How about if we actively work to have a country where we don't get corrupt self interested crooks at the top?

We might not manage it. But at least we'd have done something for ourselves rather than sitting back and hoping that the next person who inherits is okay -ish.

Don't forget that king Charles III was good buddies with monstrous nonce Jimmy Savile and stated previously that he wanted to be a tampon. So we're not off to a good start with this one anyway.

I'm pretty sure between us we could come up with a better alternative.

Furries · 10/09/2022 02:37

Keep - but with caveats woven in to the process. It’s great that things have been updated so that females are included in the line of succession.

Adjustments need to be made to exclude those like TDOY, no matter how “high up” they are in the line.

I think Charles needs to continue with his “slimmed-down” version of the family.

If everything gets skimmed down, I think it would be amazing to release a few properties into the social housing realm. Turn a few of them into wonderful apartments for social housing. No, it’s not going to solve a housing crisis. But it would be a significant move to show that the RF is giving something back to a small part of society. Senior royals get one home each. The Monarch gets two, maybe three, homes. The rest are repurposed and redesigned to provide homes for a few more people.

But, again, my answer is still to keep.

Abolish should off been done along time ago.

GuyMontag · 10/09/2022 02:41

And us left footers? We'll never get a go at being king. You'd need to do a fuck tonne of adjusting to make any of it make sense. Just ditch it. Start again.
