Tell me your favourite comfort TV shows

Basically anything that is the TV equivalent of a hug. Particularly shows that are perfect for autumn/winter nights, the kind of thing it's nice to watch when it's dark outside and you're curled up under a blanket.

I've rewatched my favourites recently and want to start something new. Gilmore Girls is top of my recommendations and is great for autumn. Friends, How I Met Your Mother and Death in Paradise are all on my list too. I liked Parks and Rec but that seems to have disappeared from Netflix and Prime.

Nothing too sad or soppy please as I'm lonely and struggling after a breakup 😂

Bonus points if it's on Netflix, Prime, Disney+ or any of the free sites/apps

Just started a place to call home, recommended on here. It is perfect comfort tv. On Amazon prime. Total escapism.

Agadoodoododont · 10/09/2022 21:50

Friends. Still laugh every time. It kept me sane when we lived in the ME (before streaming) . There was one episode shown a day at 5.30.

OhHeySis · 10/09/2022 21:50

Also Frasier. It’s aged better than Friends.

And schitts creek and virgin river

My comfort shows are polar opposites.

I either constantly rewatch The Office Us or Supernatural. Supernatural is amazing for this time of year too! It's on amazon prime.

Pushing Daisies. Just a lovely show.

Also, and don’t judge me, I find Sarah and Duck very comforting.

Haha.. Sarah and Duck is lovely!

This is such a good thread OP.

I know pp said crime shows, I don't watch many but have to add the Mentalist, re watching it just now and it's easy watching.

Also on the Sarah and Duck link, The Thick of It. I love Roger Allam's voice in S&D but he's always Peter Mannion to me!

Downton Abbey, Modern Family, Friends, Spaced, New Girl, Gilmore Girls, Check it out with Dr Steve Brule, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, Poirot, Columbo, Murder she wrote, Will & Grace, Seinfeld...

Jane the virgin

OP, just in case this slid by you :) let me up vote this suggestion BIG TIME...

Since giving birth to DS I cannot stomach anything murdery, rapey, or otherwise pointlessly dark and horrible. BUT I also don't want anything too dumb, nor do I want reality TV, nor do I want to watch smug men smirking smugly at each other so all those comedy panel shows are out.

JANE THE VIRGIN saved my life during crappy 2nd pregnancy! So funny! So sharp! Clever-cute not schmaltzy-cute! Romantic! Feminist! And there's LOADS of them so even at binge-watch pace it lasts a while.

Promise you if you give it a go you will not regret it. It's on Netflix. You are most welcome <3

Beezknees · 10/09/2022 22:41

Benidorm. Love it.

Beezknees · 10/09/2022 22:42

Oh and Derry Girls.

Lipsandlashes · 10/09/2022 22:44

Ted Lasso is the epitome of a TV hug. My others are Only Fools and Horses, Gavin and Stacey and Benidorm.

Jane the virgin

I've recently started watching this! It's great! Love it and definitely comfort TV.

I'd also add 'Never have I ever', Ted Lasso, Trying, Virgin River & This is Us.

Icecreamandapplepie · 10/09/2022 22:59

Ooh, dead to me. Not too cosy but something so comforting (yet thrilling) about it

New series coming soon

kerstina · 11/09/2022 09:49

Motherland, Dawson’s Creek, The Thorn Birds, the Royce Family ,Towie ,Made in Chelsea , Louis Theroux , Simon Reeves and Ben Fogle programmes.

JustDanceAddict · 11/09/2022 09:52

I concur w Shtisel - excellent viewing. Such pathos!

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/09/2022 10:22

Lots of comedy for me -

Gavin and Stacey
Friday night Dinner
dinnerladies (big VW fan)
Only fools and horses

TroublesomeTomato · 11/09/2022 11:07

Frasier
Buffy
X files
Friends
Total trash like MIC or Hoarders

Decidualcast · 11/09/2022 11:09

Mrs Maisel in Amazon - utterly delightful.

WarmSausageTea · 11/09/2022 11:18

Schitt’s Creek, the Good Place, Heartstopper and Special on Netflix. All lovely, though Special is a bit racy in places.

Love, Simon and Live, Victor on Disney + are both sweet natured and feel good, though very little happens in the latter. Only Murders In The Building looks fabulous, and has a great cast… I couldn’t get fully into it, but definitely worth a look.

DeadbeatYoda · 11/09/2022 12:43

Haven't rtft but The Waltons! Also the old series of all creatures great and small.

isometro · 11/09/2022 14:01

So many fantastic recommendations, thank you! Finishing off a rewatch of IT Crowd at the moment and then I will delve into the suggestions

A place to call home, Australian series wonderful.

Yes I must get back into that it will keep me going through autumn winter.

IDinnaKen · 11/09/2022 14:45

Definitely period dramas here, Jane Austen adaptations in particular.
downton abbey is escapism but has too many sad moments to be comforting I think.

purpleme12 · 11/09/2022 14:53

I have just rediscovered the original Sabrina the teenage witch with my child. It's making me laugh out loud. Absolutely loving it.
Way better than I remember!!

Stomacharmeleon · 11/09/2022 14:57

@kikisparks I know the episode you mean. I was in Belgium with my dp and had never watched it. He was half asleep and I was open mouthed... he commented 'what are you watching?'
It bothered me for ages afterwards. It was so graphic. And DP still remembers it.....
