Period Dignity Officer is suing the group that appointed him

BBC story

He's claiming sex discrimination. So many people have said that this appointment should have been exempt from the Equalities Act, I wonder if he'll succeed?

He's also claiming he was sacked, whereas the statements so far have been that the post was being removed, which isn't the same thing.

It sounds like his departure will be just as much of a dog's breakfast as his arrival. I hope he doesn't win.

What in God’s name is a period dignity officer and why was it a man??

AnyFucker · 07/09/2022 18:42

What is wrong with him ? Is he on his fucking period or summat ?

ahem

titchy · 07/09/2022 18:46

He's got a point to be honest.

If only someone had thought through the role and the optics of appointing a man - it was hardly difficult to foresee.

Thought it was his bestie that appointed him?

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 07/09/2022 18:47

Lets face it, a man who applied for the job of period dignity officer is hardly going to be the most self aware and reasonable of people is he?

WetWednesday · 07/09/2022 18:48

He has got a point and it does sound like he wasn't supported when all the negative publicity came out.

BUT people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, wasn't there a mention that the post was only advertised a couple of days and the person involved with recruiting him had been involved with recruiting him for other posts?

RausageSoul · 07/09/2022 18:48

I'm pretty sure the job would have been a policy role office based. Not visiting young girls and handing out Sanpro?

Only advertised for a few days and in the wrong section so more qualified candidates wouldn't have seen it and applied. Potentially an oversight, but seeing as he was appointed to his previous role by the same person, feels like it could be more.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 07/09/2022 18:53

Yes it appears the person who appointed him had also appointed him for 3 roles previously AND the job advert was published in the wrong section of their vacancies so would t have been visible to people looking for that kind of role.

They also stated that he was the 'most qualified applicant'. Its a new role, not one that he could have direct experience of performing before, it requires someone to speak to menopausal women and identify suitable actions to support them, and work with schools etc to identify the best ways to provide period support/distribute period products to those in need.

It's hard to believe he was more qualified than any of the women who applied let alone all of them.

ADialgaAteMyDog · 07/09/2022 18:54

None of this make any sense!
They appointed him, apparently not realising there would be a reaction. Odd.

Then, instead of having the courage of their convictions they delete the role. What on earth can be the nature of these "threats and abuse" that he couldn't do the role? If it's a personal safety and security issue, plenty of people all over the word do their job under severe threats (thinking of the women in Kenya walking to villages to educate re FGM and often being harmed because of it). Security could be provided, surely, if it was that bad?

It just seems like the organisation that recruited him have realised they've made a big mistake, thrown all the toys out of the pram but it's not made anything better.
I'd have more respect for them if they'd kept at it and managed to provide the data to show he'd made the changes he was recruited to make. Perhaps they didn't think he could?

What I meant to say was thank you to @FlibbertyGiblets for finding that photo. I was looking for it to answer RausageSoul's post too.

I suspect that they expected lots of praise for being so incredibly gender neutral or whatever and did not expect the massive backlash.

I was trying to work out why you thought shrubs and bushes would help in that photo...unless it was to hide two men 😶

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 07/09/2022 19:02

sorry that should have been in response to @ADialgaAteMyDog

balalake · 07/09/2022 19:04

If due process is not followed, then regardless of what we think about his appointment, he can claim unfair dismissal and probably will succeed to some degree.

I remember the Haringey Head of Children's Services being paid compensation because due process was not followed.

Notplayingball · 07/09/2022 19:05

Not really surprising. He will take them to the cleaners as well...

And yet one of the publicity photos appeared to show him explaining periods to a woman and teenage girl.

I can't even believe that there was such a thing as a 'period dignity officer', LET ALONE that this was a man!

This with knobs on

How on earth a man could be the 'most qualified applicant' to make policy regarding a subject which he has zero practical experience of is beyond me. Literally any female candidate would have known more about the dignity issues relating to periods than him.
