What’s the most expensive bit of furniture you have bought?

Those who know me in real life, know that I am a bargain hunter. I refuse to pay full price for anything . It lets me get nice things that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford. I can’t tell you the last time I bought something brand new…. Other than my knickers !

A few weeks ago, I was passing an auction. I went in and saw the most beautiful antique chest of drawers. Large & sturdy, good for every day use. I somehow went back and bid for it against another bidder. Including shipping it down to my house, it will cost about £1,000 in total 😨

I didn’t even spend £1,000 on a new washing machine, dishwasher, oven, microwave, tumble dryer, hob, fridge etc . So how the hell have I spent £1,000 on a chest of drawers.

It is beautiful, but it’s so out of character for me
to pay that much or to pay full price on anything.

I spent a lot more than that on a painting I saw at an art gallery, about 15 years ago. I still get a huge amount of pleasure on a daily basis from it, so it was well worth the money. Albeit that was in pre-DC days, when we actually had spare cash!

Cuddlywuddlies · 05/09/2022 09:49

I paid 13k for my sofa. 🙈

AchillesLastStand · 05/09/2022 10:13

The 1k drawers sound amazing. They will bring you joy every day and will be money well spent OP. I have some solid Mango wood drawers in my bedroom that I love. Cost me around £500.

Not furniture but I once spent £400 on a book. It’s now worth over £1k not that I’ll ever sell it.

LosttheremoteAGAIN · 05/09/2022 10:24

My parents are the same-my mother loves a bargain and my dad is an eco warrior

anyway,my mother started making noises about getting a Welsh dresser for a space in the lounge-and had seen one she liked in one of those furniture warehouse places

i walked in just after they’d had it delivered to hear my dad going mental

’you paid how much?’ ‘You where fucking conned!’ And ‘they saw you coming!’ (Dad hates parting with cash at the best of times)

my mother walked pasted me,winked, nudged me and whispered
’i knocked a 0 off the price’

they still have it and he still says she was conned-at the price he thinks she paid…

Fitted wardrobes were about £4k. Worth every penny tbh.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/09/2022 11:51

Well I am now doing up the old wardrobes after hearing the cost of new!

The most expensive thing we bought was the sofa bed.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/09/2022 11:52

We still have someone's old table ex borrowed twenty years or so ago. He can't remember who from.

mrsg2019 · 05/09/2022 11:54

Our bed - $6k and totally worth it

Frazzled2207 · 05/09/2022 11:58

We spent £5k on solid oak bedroom furniture. Many years ago.
no regrets other than when we moved there was no way we’d fit the bigger wardrobe upstairs so we now have a huge wardrobe in the hall!!!

Toiletroll · 05/09/2022 13:39

Sounds like one big coat cupboard then !! Lots of useful storage

We have a really nice sofa bed and it cost me all of a pot of mixed fruit compote. My neighbour had been in hospital and I'd just made this vat of compote and thought she might like some. Phoned her up and she was in tears because the charity who were coming to take away the sofa bed wouldn't take it because it was upstairs and she had a new bed being delivered the next day. She just wanted rid of it. Long story short - me and OH dismantled it and it replaced our uncomfortable, knackered sofa. After were done, she said 'What were you phoning for?' and I said it was to see if she wanted some compote.

Actually buying furniture, it was probably our bed base, which was specially made, but I can't remember how much it was now as we got it over 30 years ago.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/09/2022 13:52

@BlackeyedSusan , we were quoted around £3500 ten years ago for a wall of fitted wardrobes - and that was his, ‘Only if you sign now, it’s only for today’ price.

The existing wardrobes were actually Ok, except that they were horrible white melamine with nasty, cheap looking brass-effect handles.

I rubbed them down, gave them 2 coats of cream cupboard paint, and replaced all the handles with wooden ones.
Total transformation, total cost £65. 🙂
Admittedly it did take quite a while though.

SisterAgatha · 05/09/2022 13:56

I worked in a furniture shop and can tell you people regularly spend £500+ on one tiny armchair or coffee table. An Italian dining table would be £3k+

PegasusReturns · 05/09/2022 13:57

I spent £1000 on some hideous drawers knowing they’d be beautiful once of stripped the 37 coats of bottle green gloss paint off them.

At the time I didn’t have £1000 to spend on much, certainly not drawers but they have been a feature of my home for 25 years, travelling to 5 countries in 3 continents.

Hope you enjoy your drawers as much as I enjoy mine 😊

Jellycatspyjamas · 05/09/2022 14:32

I bought a sofa originally priced at £3200 for the princely sum of £400, a minor repair to one of the legs and it’s lasted us 10 years, as comfy as the day we bought it.

EspeciallyDivided · 05/09/2022 14:45

Probably our bedroom furniture which was £2000 and that was 20 years ago.

I walk past a high end furniture shop fairly regularly and sometimes go in for a browse, it is all gorgeous but ££££. At first glance you might think "oh you can get chairs like that in Ikea". But when you go in and look the quality is amazing. They had this tiny pouffe in the window once for £600, I went in and looked at it. It was impeccable. Perfectly round, no visible stitches or joins, no unevenness or puckering, it really was perfection.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/09/2022 14:48

A second hand, renovated expanding dining room table and chairs. £500, but I love using and seeing it daily.

Verbena87 · 05/09/2022 14:51

We’re the same, our most expensive items have been the wood burner and the sofa just because it’s an awkward size so we had to buy new.

I still regret not paying £1200 for a chest of drawers I saw in an antique shop every time I open my sock drawer. They were beautiful and I wish I had them. I think you’ve done right.

custardbear · 05/09/2022 14:54

I was quoted 14k for fitted wardrobes. I was very pissed off as I'd asked for a ballpark figure as they had no price guides etc and I only called them because I liked one of the panel doors. They just said oh we can't tell you as it's so bespoke and depends on what you want - fair enough, but the first thing the guy said when he came in was 'we're not like Sharps, we're much more bespoke and expensive ... I told him he'd wasted his journey but he still quoted me!

PeloDramatic · 05/09/2022 14:55

This mirror, 16 years ago. I can't remember exactly how much as my mum paid for it but it's the most expensive thing I have
The shop had doormen to greet you Blush and I just fell in love with it

What’s the most expensive bit of furniture you have bought?
goldfinchonthelawn · 05/09/2022 15:19

1k on a massive kitchen table, over 15 years ago. Given that it is central to our lives, from everyday homework and family dinners to massive get togethers for birthdays, Christmas and Easter, it has earned its keep and Ilove it. If we move, we need a space for it.

Adversity · 05/09/2022 16:36

1.5k on a bed 21 years ago.

Kinsters · 05/09/2022 17:00

About £1k on our American style fridge/freezer. It's huge and we remodeled our kitchen to fit it in (so I guess we can add in the cost of moving all the units around, redoing the walls and power sockets etc). Worth every penny. Pretty much all our furniture is inherited - anything we've bought ourselves is IKEA so nothing expensive.

Kualma · 05/09/2022 17:00

Mattress - £7k
