What’s the most expensive bit of furniture you have bought?

Those who know me in real life, know that I am a bargain hunter. I refuse to pay full price for anything . It lets me get nice things that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford. I can’t tell you the last time I bought something brand new…. Other than my knickers !

A few weeks ago, I was passing an auction. I went in and saw the most beautiful antique chest of drawers. Large & sturdy, good for every day use. I somehow went back and bid for it against another bidder. Including shipping it down to my house, it will cost about £1,000 in total 😨

I didn’t even spend £1,000 on a new washing machine, dishwasher, oven, microwave, tumble dryer, hob, fridge etc . So how the hell have I spent £1,000 on a chest of drawers.

It is beautiful, but it’s so out of character for me
to pay that much or to pay full price on anything.

£1.5k on a beautiful dining table and chairs 25 years ago. Just sold it good as new for £80.

My mattress, if it counts for furniture.

I still rent so it's a bit pointless to spend much on anything else.

£1200 on an octogonal extending dining table and 6 chairs - in 1987!! Saw it in Proffits in Bolton and then managed to track it down to a shop in Cheetham Hill.

About 4000€ on a digital piano 7 years ago that would now cost 7000€.

14000€ on an Aga in France - due to there being no licence agreement, meaning it cost more.

New kitchen and sofa. X

I’ve spent (quite a bit) more on practical furniture because I believe in buying the best you can afford and keeping it forever but I spent £400 on pure frivolity of an up cycled corner GPlan sideboard. It’s beautiful and cheers me up every day.and it holds the gin 😁

£12k on electric automated blinds for apex and other out of reach windows. Very painful and ended up costing more than the windows themselves.

3.5k on a Parker Knoll reclining sofa, otherwise 6 Ercol dining chairs that’s 3k, the table was fortunately free as was MIL and too big when she downsized. It’s a 1960’s Danish table and really lovely. We also had 2 wardrobes, 2 chests of drawers, a TV cabinet and a big blanket box made for us, that was ages ago so can’t remember the exact figures. It was really lovely having things made just for us.

£1.6k on a sofa. My first sofa cost me £30 so it sort of balances out (cough). I've always had second hand furniture or freebies from friends/family but decided I was going to treat myself this time.

Kitsmummy · 09/05/2023 08:10

A £7k cooker (Esse, looks similar to Aga) and £1000 on wallpaper for the hall Blush.

Apart from that everything is cheap as chips and second hand

LunaNorth · 09/05/2023 08:12

A leather Eames chair and footstool. It’s beautiful. About £7k, I think.

A lifelong dream, bought with part of my inheritance.

Our bed and our sofas were expensive, but worth it.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/05/2023 11:28

£1200 on a mattress a few months ago.

It's amazing. Worth the cost in no longer needing to see the physio!

£4100 on an Arts & Crafts Movement oak sideboard (with original retailers label for Liberty), purchased on eBay in 2004.

I'm called the eBay queen amongst friends and family although that was my most expensive - and first! - purchase from the online auction.

We've bought most of our furniture and decorative objects there over the years - but not everything was that many £££, for example we have a stunning French Art Nouveau plant stand with 4 x Mucha inspired brass plaques that was just £400. This is probably worth a few thousand £££. Also, an original, huge and very unique Art Nouveau copper fireplace hood that I snapped up for £52 from people rippingthe guts out of renovating a Wimbledon mansion.

Also - whilst not the most expensive item - we have a tiny Arts and Crafts Movement table with copper top inset with lapiz cabochons purchased from a prestigious London specialist dealer when we were on a day out in 2005. We spent £800 (that was I'd just withdrawn in cash to make a stage payment to our roofers 🙄) on it. DH - who loves it as much as me - jokes that without the top it's the kind of thing you'd pick up at a carboot sale for a tenner!
