What’s the most expensive bit of furniture you have bought?

Those who know me in real life, know that I am a bargain hunter. I refuse to pay full price for anything . It lets me get nice things that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford. I can’t tell you the last time I bought something brand new…. Other than my knickers !

A few weeks ago, I was passing an auction. I went in and saw the most beautiful antique chest of drawers. Large & sturdy, good for every day use. I somehow went back and bid for it against another bidder. Including shipping it down to my house, it will cost about £1,000 in total 😨

I didn’t even spend £1,000 on a new washing machine, dishwasher, oven, microwave, tumble dryer, hob, fridge etc . So how the hell have I spent £1,000 on a chest of drawers.

It is beautiful, but it’s so out of character for me
to pay that much or to pay full price on anything.

About 450 - the dining table was just under and the dresser in the kitchen just over, including delivery. They're both secondhand, good brands (Ercol/Waring and Gillow) and I love them very much. New furniture always seems to cost an absolute bomb even for something not terribly well made.

I would totally spend a grand on a lovely antique chest of drawers if I had it, though!

chilliesandspices · 05/09/2022 17:33

1.6k for my outdoor sofa... the indoor one was £650. Then I spent £140 on the cover. This summer it's been worth it and with the cover it survived last winter outdoors and came out looking the same as before I covered it. I regret nothing.

Our current bed cost £2.5 several years ago. That’s by far the most we have ever spent on a piece of furniture. I’m a firm believer that there are a few things in life which you should never, ever skimp on ; car tyres, office chairs and beds being high on the list. You can’t put a price on a good night’s sleep, a back which doesn’t ache and a car which stops safely in the wet.

VenusClapTrap · 05/09/2022 17:49

Antique furniture is totally worth it because you’ll have it a lifetime and it will bring joy every time you look at it.

I think our most expensive purchases were the sofas and the marble kitchen worktops - both about £10K

My dad was a solicitor, but a very benevolent and/or dodgy one, he used to do work for people for payment in kind. Drove DM up the wall.

Anyway, I grew up in London, with a beast of a kitchen table DDad took as payment in kind from a young designer...... Terrance Conran.

Nearly 20 years ago I wanted a corner wall unit.
Gets to a showroom and the only one I liked wouldn't
go with our furniture.
DH told me that I should buy the matching items as they
were in the sale.
Ended up with table, 6 chairs, corner unit, large wall unit,
China cabinet, cupboard for our stereo and TV unit all in
beautiful cherry wood. Cost in the sale £9000.
Still love it now.

faffadoodledo · 05/09/2022 18:41

Around 5k for a handmade giant kitchen/dining table with matching chairs and a long bench for lots of little bottoms to squish up on. 20 years late and it has seen hundreds of multi generation dinners, parties and gatherings. Worth every penny, and v durable!

greektreacle · 05/09/2022 18:43

6.5k on a bed. It felt a bit crazy but it's a lovely bed and massages you.

Eyesopenwideawake · 05/09/2022 18:49

My bed - cost €5000 exactly 20 years ago and still soooo comfortable. It will probably outlast me!!

FloppyFlippy · 05/09/2022 18:57

Bed
Garden table and chairs
2 snuggle chairs and a 2 seater sofa.
Strangely all £3,300

Twospaniels · 05/09/2022 18:59

£9k on garden furniture

£6k on two sofas and an armchair for the sitting room

I don’t mind paying for quality and it will all last for many, many years. Unlikely to change it again before we downsize when we are older.

£200 for a gaming chair... or around £1500 for the (electric) piano if a piano counts.

That's because we "inherited" most of our furniture when we bought our house off our landlady. Almost all other furniture was second hand-we have a very good second hand furniture shop up the road, which means we get much better quality for cheaper than we can buy new.

LeoDragonLady · 05/09/2022 19:15

My husband uses the saying "If you buy cheap then you buy twice" so we do have quite a few things that in my opinion were a bit too expensive.
Our dining table and chairs were £3000 around 15 years ago but they don't look out of date or old and none of the legs are loose. I've lost count of the times he's said "See I told you this table would last for years". I think the last time he said that was last week 🙄🤣

I paid 13k for my sofa. 🙈

I'd want it to feel like sitting on a cloud for that money! 😳

Beetr00t · 05/09/2022 19:20

We spent 1.5 on a sofa and everything else is Ikea!

FunsizedandFabulous · 05/09/2022 19:48

Bed was £1100.
I bought an expanding table from the Cotswold company for about £350. The chairs that went with it were £150 each. I said, nope, and bought four chairs from IKEA at £70 each (plus two folding chairs at £30 each for Christmas).
Got a bespoke ottoman from John Lewis for £400 to put all our random crap in which is teal velvet but I cover it up with a throw because the cat has scratched it in the past.
We try and get bargains really. Sale items.

Always4Brenner · 05/09/2022 19:51

Not furniture as such but my 65 inch tv got I the sale for £1200 instead of £2000 saved for years for it it’s going with me to my new home it’s my pride and joy.

Our bed, it's was 4k 15 years ago, got it in the sale for £2k. Money well spent.

Augend23 · 05/09/2022 22:16

Almost all my furniture is second hand. I think the most expensive thing I own is my bed, which was £450.

But the the sofas are now 33 and still going strong so suspect they were pretty expensive, the dining table is mahogany and was £nil.

I think in total I have paid £350 for my second hand furniture - 2 sofas, a coffee table, a side table, a stereo set Inc speakers, a 50 inch tv, wardrobe, 3x chests of drawers, a dressing table, 2x bedside tables, a dining table, 4 chairs, a rocking chair and a sideboard...

The sum total of new furniture I own is 2 beds, a desk, a TV stand and an outdoor furniture set. They cost me £1300 in total, £900 for the beds, £150 for the desk, the TV stand was £200 but is solid oak and was bespoke - someone did the labour as a birthday present and I bought the materials. The entire outdoor furniture set was £50 six years ago and is still doing fine.

So that means I think overall the entire house is furnished for what, £1,650. I really hadn't realised I had got away with spending that little TBH.

Wow - what's it like??

torthecatlady · 05/09/2022 22:48

Those look SO comfy!

Skinterior · 05/09/2022 22:48

6k on hand made fitted wardrobes a decade ago. Felt horrific at the time.

They're still perfect. Absolutely worth the money.
