What items are worth bulk buying to get before even higher prices

MoriaRoseForever · 02/09/2022 20:52

im wondering whether I should stick up on some items to save money . So much has gone up and likely to keep going up.

Are others buying lots of items because they know with inflation they will just keep increasing .

Of course the issue is finding the money up front to buy loads of tins, pulses, toiletries, cleaning stuff etc .

Is this worth trying to do ?

Olive oil, apparently. Crop yield is supposed to be low due to the lack of rainfall.

rumred · 02/09/2022 20:54

I have lots of toothpaste, tins of pulses, tins of tomatoes and dishwasher tabs
And various other tinned goods.
Why pay more?

FlippertyGibberts · 02/09/2022 20:55

I'm not - I don't have the storage space, and it would probably just lead to waste anyway.

madroid · 02/09/2022 20:55

expensive stuff I suppose: coffee, oil, cocoa, any antipasti stuff like olives, meat then the same type of stuff as in the lockdowns, that will keep.

Orangesare · 02/09/2022 21:07

I got caught out at the beginning of covid as I usually stock up before winter as I traditionally have less money in winter and my supplies ran out just as the panic buying began!
So I’m stocking up on toothpaste, period stuff (I do also use reusables), toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, cotton buds, calpol, other useful medicines,
loo roll
kitchenroll
tin foil/cling film even though I don’t use much
tinned fruit
tissues
squash
beans/spaghetti and sausages
tinned tomatoes
sugar
flour but not too much
a little pasta and rice but we mainly eat potatoes

essentially anything I know we will use, I don’t buy anything for stocking up that we don’t eat in a normal week

bottled water. Half a dozen 5 lt bottles. Enough for drinking and cooking for almost a week if the worst happened with water supplies. But it’s actually really handy for when they randomly cut you off for a day to mend a leak!

Dannexe · 02/09/2022 21:15

Meat. I’m trying to fill the freezer.

Qik · 02/09/2022 21:26

Gold.
Microsoft shares.
Onion sets.

The more I have focused on these things, the higher my annual income has been since about 1996. I like wine gums, but only for personal consumption.

These three, study the markets.

BarrelOfOtters · 02/09/2022 21:30

Kiln dried logs for the woodburner is the only thing I’ve consciously thought, that’s going to go up, I’m buying 30 bags, anything else I’ll work round.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/09/2022 21:31

My husband came back from the supermarket with a sack of tea bags. Should keep us going for a while.

LeatherBasket · 02/09/2022 21:38

Meat, coffee, all fresh produce, toilet roll.

MoriaRoseForever · 02/09/2022 21:43

Sort of the things I was thinking of. I don’t have a large freezer, so would have to be dried or tinned food.

Its to know what might go up more than other items, although it seems all food is going up. Probably can’t go wrong with food/ cleaning etc .

Any recommendations for best places to stock up ?
that do large sizes, cheaper .

I have started collecting my husbands farts in empty lemonade bottles. If we get desperate enough we will feed them directly into the boiler to save money on natural gas.

CatLadyDrinksGin · 02/09/2022 21:45

Logs. Lamp oil and another oil lamp. Cast iron pots to cook with on the log burner.

Qik · 02/09/2022 21:55

I agree. Whale oil if you can get it. Should be easier now we have left the EU.

Candles as well. Long ones for early evening. Short thick stout ones for burning overnight. But for bedtime, medium sized, thick at the base, tapering to a nice rounded end. A bit of whale oil in a pot by the side.

RayneDance · 02/09/2022 22:14

onion set's

???.what's an onion set?

I could also fuel us through winter on husband emissions.

Not sure what to get really, usual staples, some batch cooking...

RayneDance · 02/09/2022 22:15

Batteries for battery's operated candle's?

PuppyMonkey · 02/09/2022 22:21

Wine. Wine

KupoNutCoffee · 02/09/2022 22:26

I have a costco membership, which is good for things in bulk. There's nothing I'm specifically buying for price rises, just more that I can store and it seems to work out cheaper.

Toilet roll - I get a huge 6 pack of 9 from costco ...I'm sure it lasts us a good 6 months - it seems to never end.

Rice and pasta - need storage jars to decant to if you're buying big bags though.

Chopped tomatoes

Giant tub of Italian herbs, and any other seasoning you use loads (and I mean loads - definitely needs to be a multi use one, not like turmeric....)

We get sparkling water. Squash.

Coffee. Tea

Cat food - or other animal food depending on your pets.

We stopped buying soft drink cans though...realised we'd drink more through it being there and a can a night, than just having the odd 2l bottle in occasionally. Word of warning I suppose, if you start buying stuff in bulk, that you inadvertently use more by virtue of feeling like you have loads in.

We also get meat from costco...but I'm trying to limit it a bit. Need food bags and self control to portion it out in advance. We have a chest freezer though

DeathMetalMum · 02/09/2022 22:32

I've been buying extra of things that are more than £1 that I can easily store. Recently I have bought extra toothpaste, coffee, heinz soup, face wash and toilet roll. Even though the last isn't easy to store. They've all been on offer and I've bought either three rather than one of each (toothpaste) or just bought it even though I don't need it yet.

Other tins we are fairly well stocked. Have also been stocking up on cup a soups and cheep noodles, adding various veg from the fridge and making some nice hot lunches in the microwave, good idea for the winter.

HikingBoots · 02/09/2022 22:40

We've been stocking up for 6 months or so.
I've been focusing on sunflower oil, flour, pasta as it contains flour, and rice. Its likely that there will be severe shortages of these items next year. We've also bought dried lentils, tinned tomatoes and beans. I'm now buying tinned potatoes (not something I've ever eaten before) as there is talk in pockets of the world of an impending potato shortage next year too.
At the moment we are all eating produce resulting from crops which were planted in 2021, before the conflict in Ukraine began and before the major flooding/droughts (in various locations) of 2022.These issues have prevented crops from being planted this year and we will only see the resulting shortages next year.

Eeksteek · 02/09/2022 22:54

I bake bread and make pizza every week, so I bought a couple of sacks of flour and have been adding an extra packet of pasta when possible to my weekly shop. I’m crazy broke though, so stocking up isn’t happening.

I wonder what will be expensive? Sunflower oil? Butter seems to have gone up a lot. I reckon meat will, and lots of veg. It’s been a rubbish growing year. God, I hope the world is more sensible next year. This year is a crock.

Branster · 02/09/2022 23:00

Oil seems a good choice as the price always goes up.
Dried beans.
Flour too

Why are people buying toothpaste? Is it because it's easy to store? I confess I have no idea if it's gone up in price.

Mossstitch · 02/09/2022 23:19

@PuppyMonkey me too but I keep drinking it😂🥂🥂

IncessantNameChanger · 02/09/2022 23:39

I try to keep the 20p 2l bottles of water stocked up. There was power cut years ago and the pumping station stopped working. You can refill with tap water. I'm a bit worried about power cuts. I have lots of pasta and tinned tomatoes and baked beans.

Also got sanitary products in for the next three months but I do have a moon cup.

I reckon three months of very basic staples maybe. I buy the cheap pasta every time I see it which isn't very often any more

strugglingmum82 · 02/09/2022 23:52

Cleaning supplies, washing powder etc..
