What items are worth bulk buying to get before even higher prices

MoriaRoseForever · 02/09/2022 20:52

im wondering whether I should stick up on some items to save money . So much has gone up and likely to keep going up.

Are others buying lots of items because they know with inflation they will just keep increasing .

Of course the issue is finding the money up front to buy loads of tins, pulses, toiletries, cleaning stuff etc .

Is this worth trying to do ?

I agree. Whale oil if you can get it. Should be easier now we have left the EU.

Candles as well. Long ones for early evening. Short thick stout ones for burning overnight. But for bedtime, medium sized, thick at the base, tapering to a nice rounded end. A bit of whale oil in a pot by the side.

I hope to God this is satire. Can't quite tell!!!!!!

We're all doomed, no point stockpiling anything except hankies

Eslteacher06 · 03/09/2022 00:02

Sorry but this post is so irresponsible. The panic buying in 2020 started from stuff like this. Vulnerable people literally suffered from this kind of selfish behaviour

Then the heatwave where HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS WILL DIE and our faces will MELTa and WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN.

Probably gonna get piled on cause I'm not a sheep....but just give your head a wobble....or stockpile on anti anxiety drugs or something

Eslteacher06 · 03/09/2022 00:03

This thread not post lol. What a way to open myself up to abuse lol

blebbleb · 03/09/2022 00:04

Nothing. I don't have the storage space for panic buying

blebbleb · 03/09/2022 00:06

I don't understand why you would need to bulk buy oil unless you drink it, a bottle lasts me ages!

HikingBoots · 02/09/2022 22:40

We've been stocking up for 6 months or so.
I've been focusing on sunflower oil, flour, pasta as it contains flour, and rice. Its likely that there will be severe shortages of these items next year. We've also bought dried lentils, tinned tomatoes and beans. I'm now buying tinned potatoes (not something I've ever eaten before) as there is talk in pockets of the world of an impending potato shortage next year too.
At the moment we are all eating produce resulting from crops which were planted in 2021, before the conflict in Ukraine began and before the major flooding/droughts (in various locations) of 2022.These issues have prevented crops from being planted this year and we will only see the resulting shortages next year.

I hadn’t thought of potential shortages . That’s something to consider .

I've always bought stuff in bulk, well not necessarily bulk..
the way I shop is I always buy stuff I use at the lowest price. So if I'm in the supermarket and the coffee I like is at a low price, I buy it whether or not I need it right then. Might end up with 1 tin in the cupboard or 6 depending how often the lowest price is
Do that with everything from shampoo to baked beans to face wash. Not sure how much money it actually saves but it makes sense to me

Isn't this just panic buying???

BarbaraofSeville · 03/09/2022 03:31

@Eslteacher06 can't you see the difference between planning ahead and panic buying?

We were able to almost completely avoid the supermarkets during the early covid madness because we always have a certain stock level of non perishables and just used those things up instead of adding to demand when everyone was losing their minds over the lack of toilet paper.

The big pack we bought from Costco late in 2019 before anyone had heard of covid had no bearing whatsoever on availability in March 2020.

Keeping certain stock levels and buying ahead doesn't take up much space and works out much cheaper if you buy when on offer rather than small amounts week to week.

No, buying an extra bottle of sunflower oil, a bag of pasta and a bag of flour with each weekly food shop, over the course of 6 months, is not panic buying. If it were, it would be the most slowly-acted out form of 'panic' ever!

ArtyChoc · 03/09/2022 08:05

According to the farmer I spoke to yesterday, wheat prices are going back down… unless you’re a horse owner then you can afford more 🤣

ivykaty44 · 03/09/2022 08:07

Coffee
toothpaste
pasta
rice

but don’t buy then stop purchasing those items, buy in bulk and then do stick rotation

BooksAndChooks · 03/09/2022 08:38

I think it's worth looking at yoir plans for keeping warm this winter; logs, coal, oil etc. If you're planning on using them.

IncessantNameChanger · 03/09/2022 09:06

It's not panic buying. That's something you do after the event.

Plus what do suggest you do in Costco? Ask then to sell you 1/8 of a pack?

One 10kg bag of rice is 1 unit in Costco. If I buy that to last me the next six months I'm I depriving someone else of food?

I have 4 kids. One is quite severely disabled. People bought out of his favourite noodles in the first lockdown. Dispite putting out pleas on SM and with my friends I couldn't get any for weeks. I'm not putting myself in that position again.

This always comes up.

SeeSeaC · 03/09/2022 09:31

onion set's

???.what's an onion set?

I could also fuel us through winter on husband emissions.

Not sure what to get really, usual staples, some batch cooking...

Onion set —- seed onions which you plant to grow more.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/09/2022 09:38

Onions cost very little, unless you're a seasoned gardener with lots of space and a successful track record, I'm not sure it's worth the average person trying to grow them themselves, same for carrots.

Concentrate on herbs, salad, maybe tomatoes.

No stockpiling and panic buying are now the same thing. However too much of either can lead to shortages.

carefullycourageous · 03/09/2022 09:43

*not the same thing

ilovebagpuss · 03/09/2022 09:45

This thread has made me laugh this morning 😂"whale oil"but also yes some things will definitely go higher in price.
I don't think it's irresponsible to have a bit of wiggle room in your stocks of certain things but only if you use them. No point buying up flour and yeast if you just leave in baking drawer for 2 years like me.
I am buying a little extra pasta and rice and tinned goods that we cook with a lot.
I will also put by a few more toiletries as I usually buy to need.
I have a power bank and a good torch and fortunate to have a log burner. The Preppers board is good if you like a chat about general winter prep and sensible ideas to consider on food purchases etc.
But no don't bulk buy loo roll and things just keep an eye on the shops and buy responsibly.

I remember the brexit threads about supposed food shortages, and people were going mad dehydrating stuff 😂😂

I keep hearing this but no one ever explains the difference. What do some think panic buying is?

err the cost of living crisis is upon us & has filled the headlines for weeks! 😆
