What items are worth bulk buying to get before even higher prices

MoriaRoseForever · 02/09/2022 20:52

im wondering whether I should stick up on some items to save money . So much has gone up and likely to keep going up.

Are others buying lots of items because they know with inflation they will just keep increasing .

Of course the issue is finding the money up front to buy loads of tins, pulses, toiletries, cleaning stuff etc .

Is this worth trying to do ?

Onion set —- seed onions which you plant to grow more.

I don't think that's what the pp was referring to - they seem to be talking about investing. I'm intrigued too!

ZeroFuchsGiven · 03/09/2022 10:14

Im stockpiling weed, those lights are going to cost a fortune to run so stocking up before my dealer has to put his prices up Wink

'I'm only buying one extra thing. This isn't impacting anything. I'm able to avoid supermarkets this way'

But then others reading it start to panic. They buy more cause they worry nothing will be left. Then others see empty shelves and start buying extra.

If everyone bought more than they usually do, it creates a change in demand, which this country cannot handle. The butterfly effect of sorts.

So your 'extra bag of pasta' impacts more than you realise.

It's not panic buying. That's something you do after the event.

err the cost of living crisis is upon us & has filled the headlines for weeks! 😆

Panic buying is when you see a flake of snow and buy 20 loaves of bread and bottles of milk.

I think the OP is saying food is ever increasing in price. So your £4 litre of olive oil that used to be £1,8 could be £6 come winter. So if she buys two more now she's saved herself £4 in theory.

It think this is reasoning. We're not at peak food prices yet. I was amazed to see my 80p cooking bacon has gone up to £2. How much will go up again?

It's not because in real life no one actually does that. It's not supermarket sweep!

It's buying more than normal as a result of an event or anticipation of one.

yanxy · 03/09/2022 11:11

and it's people doing it as a collective as a result of everyone else buying a little extra.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 03/09/2022 11:12

Panic is manic, those women with the trolleys piled with loo rolls ( what is it about loo rolls anyway, you can’t eat them and they wouldn’t be much good on the fire)

Buying a few extra bottles of whiskey ( which you will drink anyway) when it is on special offer is smart.

yanxy · 03/09/2022 11:14

The studies from the Covid "panic buying" all say it was driven by people adding a few extra items to baskets and making more trips, rather than shoppers buying large amounts of the same item in one go.

Mustard
Anything tomato based eg tomato puree, ketchup, passata, crates of tinned tomatoes, tomato soup, sun dried tomatoes
Honey

Flour

The best way to create food shortages is to buy extra to store.

So if there are food shortages then those who are buying extra are part of the problem.

Kiln dried logs for the woodburner is the only thing I’ve consciously thought, that’s going to go up, I’m buying 30 bags, anything else I’ll work round.

The electricity used in the process of kiln-drying logs is going to send the price rocketing.

Not if you've always done it, I've shopped like I do since I started doing my own
If you change your habits snd start buying 6 olive oil instead of 1 then yes

Yep, i'm not talking about stockpiling. More buying two or three rather than one . Some people on here say they always bulk buy to save money when something is on offer. I know people who do that. So a 3 for 2 offer, or special price. Don't buy loads and loads, just a few more.
They do that pre COL crisis or brexit or covid. I am not always good at that and I can't afford to create huge stockpiles nor do I want to. I am just thinking about have a bit more of a store cupboard and getting a few extra in to try to save a little.
I was in Aldi today and was shocked to see how much their prices are increasing.

Prices aren't going up a few pennies, but by large amounts. I don't remember this before.

I am also looking at where I can buy cheaper. So aldi washing up liquid rather than Sainsburys.

I hadn't thought this could be creating panic buying and don't want us to get into the toilet roll nonsense of covid.
But there is a reality to this there wasn't with toilet rolls . Prices are rocketing and i'm just trying to think can I add a few extra to my shop to make a little difference. Or buying a larger size of something to save a little.

I really didn't mean stockpiling loads and loads. And I would hate to see panic buying again.

Not going to buy six bottles of olive oil for example. More buy the larger size or two or find an offer sort of thing.
It has always been more economical to buy a larger size. Cheaper per 100 ml, and that's for most products.
I don't have a large freezer and can't buy lots extra. So it was about what would be a good idea to buy one extra of.

OP posts:
MoriaRoseForever · 04/09/2022 11:37

And as I said , and others here , many have done this for many years as it saves money.

I do anyway buy things on offer .

I wouldn't buy six .

I have been more likely to buy more with cosmetics or skincare. So if its a cream I buy anyway and its 3 for 2 I will buy 3. What I avoid is buying 3 on something I wouldn't buy anyway . So not getting drawn into 'bargains' when would;t buy normally.

Its threads like this that start people off panic buying. I won't be stocking up on anything just like I didn't last time they all started going doolally in the shops frightening old people and stopping others from being able to buy any one item.
Pah

WillPowerLite · 04/09/2022 11:48

It's not panic buying. It's premeditated panic buying.

FayeGovan · 04/09/2022 11:57

Wouldn't work in this house. Dh opens a new packet of something before the old ones finished. I'd Have 5 emptyish bottles or packets of stuff lying around forever driving me nuts.

Buying extra treat stuff wouldn't work as I'd just eat more !

I've always stocked up ahead and have currently stocked up on the following:

Coal
Logs
Candles
Water
Wine
Gin
Whisky
Pasta, rice, flour, oats
Tinned meat, veg and fruit
Herbs, oils, seasonings
Toiletries, cleaning materials, bin liners
Meat and fish in the freezer
Pet food in bulk

Also bought us all sheepskin slippers, thermal clothing, fleece PJs, lots of blankets.

Already have solar panels, heavy curtains, led lighting and energy efficient appliances as my energy bills were crazy high a few years ago so I had to reduce our consumption back then.

The Food Warehouse is good if people want to buy larger packs, catering packs. It is part of Iceland if you don't know it and if you are over 60 they are doing 10% off on Tuesdays.
