Would you/could you cook after 8pm

Sorry, saw it on the DM website! (I admit I go there but see it as a trashy mag!) Apparently one of the measures for avoiding blackouts over winter is asking people to either cook their evening meal after 8pm or to eat cold food. For me personally this wouldn’t work. I eat early, around 6. I’m usually in bed by 9. So there’s no way I’m going to be cooking my evening meal at 8. I’m quite happy to take any other measures, they mention also not using dishwashers/washing machines between 2pm and 8pm. But I don’t see how I could shift my dinner time to fit in with this. Just wondering what other people think?

Hell no. I can't eat that late.

Nadal · 02/09/2022 19:27

We eat at 8ish normally.

QuebecBagnet · 02/09/2022 19:28

No, I’d rather have a cheese sandwich earlier if I couldn’t cook.

I suppose if I had to I could, as in if you don’t get a hot meal otherwise?

sunlovingcriminal · 02/09/2022 19:28

I use my slow cooker most days! So low energy usage anyway. We tend to eat at 7.30pm-8pm so I wouldn't fancy starting cooking at 8pm!

boysmuminherts · 02/09/2022 19:28

we regularly eat that late....

Anon50000 · 02/09/2022 19:29

Far too late for me. I'm too knackered to cook after 8.

Chakraleaf · 02/09/2022 19:29

Yep we eat between 7-9

ramonaquimby · 02/09/2022 19:30

Yeah we normally eat at 8/830. Kids have finished their clubs and commuting Dh home

QueenOfWeeds · 02/09/2022 19:30

Could you eat and then cook for the next day? Eat normal time by reheating the meal you made yesterday, and then later in the evening cook for the following day?

MintJulia · 02/09/2022 19:30

Yes, I do regularly.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 02/09/2022 19:31

No. I’d rather eat at lunchtime. I cannot go to bed on a full stomach I like to have at least three/ four hours without eating anything before sleeping and I go to bed early.

xxcatcatcatxx · 02/09/2022 19:32

50% of the time we don’t cook/ eat until that late anyway, maybe 9 half 9ish occasionally, so happy to take a bullet here and make it a regular thing if needed xxx

BuildersTeaMaker · 02/09/2022 19:35

its written by someone who told the staff to serve dinner at 8pm , or “her indoors” to hav pe dinner ready at 8, , or they eat at the members dining room.

families are supposed to try to eat together. Kids would be climbing the wall by that time . Guess my ex would have as well. I’d just be passed out asleep.

ignore. Twattish comment that would make not a dent in energy bills. Like stupid kettle gate suggestion from pm yesterday.

Cynderella · 02/09/2022 19:40

I do cook/eat that late in school hols, but when I'm working, it's too late. I do batch cook and reheat though, so I'm using more fuel to cook at weekends.

RunningFromInsanity · 02/09/2022 19:41

I always eat 8-9pm

NuffSaidSam · 02/09/2022 19:41

It would be fine for me.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/09/2022 19:48

I think it's clickbait, but even if not, you'd just work round it, with slow cookers, or batch cooking at the weekend and reheating in the microwave.

DutchessOfMuck · 02/09/2022 19:48

Fine for us as we usually eat anywhere from 7pm to 10pm.

DelurkingAJ · 02/09/2022 19:50

We always eat that late…never start cooking before 8 during the week.

Augend23 · 02/09/2022 19:52

I usually eat by 7-7:30. It makes me feel a bit ill if I have to eat later. I would either cook for the following day or eat hot food at lunch.

LeftTheWashingOut · 02/09/2022 19:54

I struggle to cook before 8pm, by the time home from work, kids in bed it's regularly 8pm before we start thinking about cooking. Then straight to bed!

TigerRag · 02/09/2022 19:54

As I'm in bed by 9pm, I wouldn't. I used to do running club of an evening and get in at 8pm. But I'd only have a sandwich or toast. Don't fancy cooking that late.

GinnyJelly · 02/09/2022 19:56

No, this isn’t going to work for anyone with younger children. My youngest is in bed at 8 and tbh I’m not that far behind.

RaininSummer · 02/09/2022 19:56

Nope I wouldn't ever get a hot meal if I had to start cooking at 8 as I go to bed at 10 for work. Eat about 6 as any later I am too hungry as lunch is 12.30 ish. The only way it would work would be to cook food to zap in microwave the next day. I also cook a lot Sunday morning or afternoon for the weeks meals or freezer.
