Shock at Pub Lunch Prices!

Before I rant, I know prices have gone up everywhere & it’s to be expected but this was crazy. We went to one of our locals for lunch today ( it’s always been slightly more expensive than other similar places but always top quality food & plenty of it so we didn’t mind). However, I nearly fell over at the cost of the jacket spuds. The prawn one was £14!! £14 for a jacket spud! And a cheese one was £12! Think how many spuds & how much cheese you could buy for that!

I go out to eat food that is difficult or that i cant book at home.

I would never order jacket potatoes, sandwiches, basic pastas etc.

I’m no food snob but agree, although it doesn’t need to be difficult.. When I go out I want something that’s a treat, not a sandwich or a baked potato, which is what I knock up at home when I can’t be arsed. A tuna sandwich 0r a baked potato is not something I’d order. I want something a trained chef has cooked and it tastes like a trained chef did it.

I was shocked by the cost of a ploughmans yesterday. £9.95 but an extra £3 if you wanted any cheese with it! Otherwise it was just a boiled egg, bread and salad.

I understand why they need to charge so much to cover the rising prices and the overheads but I went into Tesco for a sandwich instead.

It's going to be a vicious circle for the pub trade - they are now being perceived as too expensive which will reduce their trade even further. I really can't see many surviving for long.

@GCAcademic maybe it depends on where you live - but the more upmarket pubs that we go to offer restaurant style meals rather than 'pub grub'. If I'm going out with my husband we go to this kind of place as we are looking for some quality food - as another PP has said, we could do a sandwich or microwave lasagne at home .

If I'm meeting a friend though - I would go somewhere a lot cheaper and have something more basic to eat as I am there to see my friend more so than enjoying the food.

Also with pubs and restaurants, included in the price is 20% VAT.
