I saved a spiders life last night.

Well, it was 5am.

Woke up and went to the kitchen and the massive brown fucker was just THERE. Blocking my access to the fridge and just staring at me, astand off if you will.

While I debated whether calling my dad or setting the house on fire was the better option, my 5 month old cat wandered in. Having never seen a house spider before, she immediately went over and tried to play with it. With her claws.

The poor thing curled up in a ball and I swear it was visibly shaking, so me a —hero— lifelong arachnophobia, came over all Mother Teresa and decided that no matter what, massive fucker should live. I picked up the cat and told the spider (out loud) to run, which it did and it was last seen taking cover under my sofa.

I have spent all day feeling serene and telling everyone who will listen, preaching to my children that we must NEVER kill a spider and boring them with tales of eco systems.

Its now getting dark and I’m starting to feel less serene and much more anxious about whether massive fucker might think we’re friends now and pop out again to say hello.

I thought I still had a few more days before all this started 😩

There was a massive fucker in our bedroom a couple of nights ago. I tried to catch him but he was determined to stay in the warm so we now have a new room mate. I'm not a fan of spiders at all but I hate flies so I feel we have an unspoken agreement of sorts

WildFlowerBees · 29/08/2022 21:01

Give it a name tell it about your day and all will be good, just be prepared for him to drag his massive willy across your face tonight 😬

One of my cats is terrified of the beasts won't go near them the other is just too old and lazy.

I had a false widow on me in the early hours which woke me up, had ptsd for days afterwards. Bastard things.

Don’t they eat their mate?

I am growing more fond of spiders by the minute! They’ve got the right idea.

Spiders are cool.

Apart from the spicy lady who tried to jump into my bed the other night, I have very much of a 'hey, cool new useful housemate!' approach to them.

As long as they don't jump into my bed.

The odds are ever in the cats favour!

I would sincerely hope so!
I may have to rename the cat as Katniss.

cleowasmycat · 29/08/2022 21:04

Rather large one appeared on the stairs the other night. Called neighbours but they had selfishly gone away. Ended up throwing a weighted blanket on it and that stayed on the stairs for 2 days.

I've been known to ask strangers walking past to assist with this issue.

YoSofi · 29/08/2022 21:07

I feel like I need to find her now and lay down some ground rules.

She is welcome to stay, but must not go in my room, try to crawl on me or hide in my clothes. Ideally I’d like her to announce herself before appearing anywhere but that could be tricky. I wish they could talk, I’d really appreciate hearing “YoSofi, I’m just going to come out from under the sofa now to find a male to shag/eat, I’ll just nip across the carpet quickly to the other side of the room and be out of your way”.

I think I’ll call her Sally.

There was an absolute whopper on my bedroom wall last night. I put it outside - it's about as warm outside as in at the moment so it should be fine.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 29/08/2022 21:15

You reap what you sow!

I've just put one outside. It was up on the join of the wall & ceiling so it was a dicey manoeuvre, but I quite like spiders, so no worries. S/he wasn't obeying the house rules (tidy up your old house before making a new one every bloody night) so it was time to vacate the premises! Now I have a fly buzzing about. My own damn fault!

oh and house spiders DO NOT die outside well not simply because they're put outside!

Oh that’s good to know!

When my dad removes them for me he puts them outside and then I was told that kills them anyway, I’m glad it’s not true.

Fantasy casting time!

What/who does your arachnid housemate sound like?

PeloAddict · 29/08/2022 21:20

My cat just lets spiders run across his paws. I'm lucky if he opens an eye to notice them. I think he's faulty

Well I’m East Midlands, so she will have a local accent and be softly spoken.

She will make soothing ASMR videos in her spare time, or maybe record audio books for children.

I like her already!

Ways let your cat/dog eat spiders.
It's one of the few useful things they can do for you.

AvocadoHeaven · 29/08/2022 21:28

You will be in for a long & happy life OP, at least if my dear mum was to be believed. She always used to say:
"If you want to live & thrive, let a spider run alive".
I personally love spiders so I'm very glad this one lived to see another day. Congratulations on your bravery.

cleowasmycat · 29/08/2022 22:32

I also have fixed mesh on my windows so they can't get in!

StarDolphins · 29/08/2022 22:33

Haha🤣 I always save them. Put a glass over them & paper & put them in next doors garden….I’m sure they find their way back in.

I just can’t kill them.

buttons123456 · 29/08/2022 20:10

I save bugs all day every day . They scare me but I hate killing stuff and won't do it unless I absolutely have to!

Me too!

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 29/08/2022 22:40

I save spiders everyday, I simply don’t tell my family, who are spider murdering psychos. If I see one in the house I keep quiet... I’ve got a little friendly one in the garage who comes out of his hole to see me when I go to lock up 😂

SupDuck · 29/08/2022 22:41

You need a spider grabber!
It is very long so keeps them far from you as it gently picks them up and places them outside.

Aaaaw!

YoSofi · 29/08/2022 22:46

I’ve just been to the kitchen and there’s one right next to the cats food bowl, so either Sally has a death wish, or there’s ANOTHER massive fucker that hasn’t yet learned of my killer cat.

I just closed the door and came to bed, but my skin is crawling! Two in as many nights is a bit of a piss take!

Off to order a grabber from Amazon, any future massive fuckers will be relocated to the shed.

Your card has been marked, you're a spider safe house now!

Look on the bright side - you'll never see an annoying flying thing again. 😉

You can buy a peppermint pest spray which dp usually spray by the windows and doors. Seems to work, not seen as many in my room this year.
