What Stephen king story am I thinking of

I think it was a novella or a short story. A man goes back to to home town for a funeral (I think). Whilst driving away he finds himself transported back twenty something years to the night his girlfriend was murdered (I think in a fair ground)

It's driving me mad trying to find it

'Joyride' I think it's called.

thinking123 · 28/08/2022 23:01

No it's not joyride. I don't think anyway. The guy actually goes back in time (time slip) I think.

I was thinking Joyland but only because of the fair ground , there’s no time travel I don’t think

It's driving me mad. I want to read it again. I remember the guy is listening to Bruce Springsteen and decides to take a different road

Might not even be a fairground!

The only SK book I can think of that involves a fair ground ( clowns etc ) type theme it 'IT' but I am guessing that's not it aa there is no time travel Involved

WillowintheUK · 28/08/2022 23:14

I’m reading Nightmares and Dreamscapes again at the moment - I’ll let you know if it turns up! 😉

CassTheFox · 28/08/2022 23:17

11/22/63 is a SK novel about a time traveller

3beesinmybonnet · 28/08/2022 23:21

Is it Bag of Bones?

Isaidnoalready · 28/08/2022 23:21

Are you sure its Stephen King? Sounds more like Dean koontz

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 28/08/2022 23:22

It sounds like Strange Highways by Dean Koontz. It's the 1st story in the book of the same name.

Father's funeral, town with burning cold underneath and bad big brother.

IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention · 28/08/2022 23:22

Did he end up moving overseas? I might be thinking of something else entirely 🤔

I'm remembering a group of friends and a fairground, there was a carousel, and something killed them.

VeridicalVagabond · 28/08/2022 23:22

I'm watching with interest because I love Stephen King but this doesn't ring a bell at all. Warped time and a fairground could be Dead Zone but no actual time travel, just lost time. Joyland has a fairground but nothing else. 11/22/63 has time travel but no other similarities. Very curious, hope someone can find it!

VanillaImpulse · 28/08/2022 23:22

Bruce Springsteen features in a lot of Stephen King books (think they are friends)

Sidneys · 28/08/2022 23:24

Which Stephen king or DK has someone kill their friend on a rollercoaster whilst going through a tunnel??

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/08/2022 23:24

The Langoliers?

FitAt50 · 28/08/2022 23:27

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/08/2022 23:24

The Langoliers?

Was about a plane being chased by time eating monsters.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/08/2022 23:44

That is a good summary @FitAt50 ! But I think someone was going home to an ex's funeral.
I only read that one once, it was a bit rubbish.

OldEnoughToHaveReadBunty · 28/08/2022 23:47

Thinner?

There's a fairground in that I think?

Handsoffmyrights · 29/08/2022 00:11

Riding the Bullet?

Codswallop20 · 29/08/2022 00:41

Dead zone was a guy and his girlfriend in a fairground, then he had an accident or was attacked and was in a coma for ages. When he woke everything was weird. The birds are flying again

FitAt50 · 28/08/2022 23:27

Was about a plane being chased by time eating monsters.

Something like that, yes. Everyone vanished.

Codswallop20 · 29/08/2022 01:00

The langoliers was about a pilot on a red eye flight, nothing at all about a fairground. All the people who were asleep lived and anyone awake vanished when the plane flew through a wormhole or something. They landed at an airport in yesterday and the langoliers came to eat everything as it was used up. Other things also happened but no fairgrounds at all

Swizzel · 29/08/2022 02:01

I'm with @Dinosauratemydaffodils on this - it sounds very much like the first story in Dean Koontz's 'Strange Highways' (I have the book). Joey took the wrong road 20 years ago, and ends up an alcoholic with nothing going for him. He travels back to his hometown to attend his father's funeral, and gets the chance to take to other road , which takes him back 20 years into the past, where he has to stop a serial killer. I won't write any more about the plot in case I spoil it for you if you can't remember the ending!
