On the back of the Past Times thread. What shops do you miss:

I miss

Coast (I know it’s online but it’s gone a bit shit)
Ravel
Morgan ( well my youthful self misses it)
Disney Store I know there is one in London but there used to be one in almost every town
Bay Trading (always good for a nice top to go with jeans)

Pier imports!
C&A my coats and shoes came from there oh and my Mum's and Aunt's wigs!!
Woolworths pic n mix but also they had a range of make up called TU (before Sainsbury's took the name). I got two gorgeous eyeshadows called Maroon chaos (Maroon obvs, would not wear it now!) and Smoke Stack ( a beautiful silvery mauve).
Not sure if Miss Selfridge is still around but last time I looked the make up was shit! Used to be really good, strong colours, a very decent black eyeshadow.
Ditto Mary Quant. The make up was well pigmented, gorgeous plums, reds and pinks but about 6-10 years ago I visited a shop and it was crap.
Missing Foyles from Westfield as it had chairs you could sit on and read. I guess Foyles still exists in Charing Cross Road?
Wish I had been to Biba when it was around!

I used to like BHS homeware section, they had lots of lighting

MissMarplesNiece · 28/08/2022 14:29

Lewis's, and like @ThreeKneeRepeater , shoe shops. There used to be half a dozen of them - Dolcis, FH&W etc along one end of New Street in Birmingham. Now I'm at a bit of a loss where to go to buy shoes where I can try them on.

User4668430 · 28/08/2022 14:30

I think the homeware shop I missed upthread is Cargo home store

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/08/2022 14:31

I miss having John Lewis nearish (Sheffield). In my ideal world, they'd take over the old Debenhams shop at Meadowhall.

But shops that have completely gone
Racing Green
BHS
Borders books with the coffee shop

Wilco have filled the Woolie's shaped hole well for me.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/08/2022 14:32

Also -Dolcis, Warehouse, Knickerbox

Surtsey · 28/08/2022 14:32

Freeman, Hardy & Willis
Woolworths
British Home Stores
Debenhams
Littlewoods
Timothy Whites
Liptons
Co-op department store
Fine Fare

quicklybeendrivenmad · 28/08/2022 14:39

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 28/08/2022 14:44

Definitely Athena, Woolies and the old-style Body Shop.

Cheshiresun · 28/08/2022 14:44

Barratts shoes. Too many good shops to remember

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 28/08/2022 14:46

Disney store
Woolworths
HMV

VioletCharlotte · 28/08/2022 14:47

So many... there's barely any clothes shops in my town centre now.

I miss Top Shop, as I used to love it so much when I was young. I was gutted when the big one on Oxford St went :(

Bay Trading used to be brilliant and does anyone remember Pilot?

I miss department stores too, I used to love a good browse round Allders years ago.

Shelley's shoes! And La Senza for underwear, they used to wrap it so nicely.

The shop I miss most is a massive sweet shop called Sweetie from when I was a kid. Not sure if it was part of a chain or an independent, but it was brilliant!

MumofSpud · 28/08/2022 14:51

Another vote for Woolworths
There are often times that I want to get something and I think I could have just got it in Woolworths

Chatterboxy · 28/08/2022 14:54

Woolworths
C&A
Chelsea Girl
Richards shop
Dolcis
Freeman Hardy & Willis
Kitchen Reject Shops (showing my age!)
Debenhams (online is crap)
BHS
Adams (childrens wear)
Oasis (online is crap

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/08/2022 14:54

There used to be a clothing company , coats , knitwear jumpers fleeeces . footwear etc.
I'm trying to remember the name , this would've been around 2000-ish
I sure there was one in Norwich .
Like an upmarket Trespass .

I miss the Trespass shop near us , they had a Closing Down sign up for ages ..then they did Sad

goldenbag · 28/08/2022 14:55

Can't understand why Woolworths went down but flying tiger is everywhere?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/08/2022 14:58

Thorntons before they started selling elsewhere (like Sainsbury)

And Tchiabo Grin
Anyone remember them? A coffee shop , but had Special Buys each week .
They had really good things like waterproofs for children, household items
P&P was scandelous so better instore

amylou8 · 28/08/2022 14:59

Woolies

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/08/2022 15:01

There used to be a huge HomeSense but it's moved into TKMaxx and it just isn't the same <stamps feet>

I used to love it and rarely came away without buying something ( that I needed) Wink

Sparklingbrook · 28/08/2022 15:01

I thought Woolworths was ok, but I don't think it stocked anything you can't get from places like Wilko now.

I miss the smell of a good independent record store.

devildeepbluesea · 28/08/2022 15:01

Woolies
Debenhams (also for bras)
David Morgan and Dan Evans department stores, Cardiff and Barry.

MoonBat · 28/08/2022 15:06

newtb · 28/08/2022 14:10

North west only, but Ethel Austin. Used to be the place to go for long t-shirts for the delivery room. Also children's clothes and 'big knickers'.

Ethel Austin was in the North East too! A bit like Peacocks I think...

I miss lots already mentioned. I think about Tchibo at least once a month, I used to have a boyfriend who lived in Islington and there was a Tchibo in the N1 shopping area, it was amazing!
Also Woolworths was great.
