What cheap items have you bought for the home that have helped get rid of mild daily annoyances?

I’m slowly making a list of things that annoy me in the house, and thinking about what to do/buy to fix the issue. I’m talking cheap things, like a pack of new drawer knobs as some of ours are broken.

What thing solved an issue that had been annoying you for ages?

We bought a stainless steel coffee press thing after breaking the 3rd glass one. I didn’t even know they existed before looking for alternatives!

I’m in the middle of a ‘not-quite-spring’-cleaning so finding lots of little things that need fixing!

Following but can't think of any at the moment.

maslinpan · 27/08/2022 14:31

Wooden tongs for the toaster.

Kanaloa · 27/08/2022 14:34

We have a little ledge/hook by the front door and hang all our keys up as we come in the door. Now I don’t need to scramble round for keys in the morning as it’s helped set the habit of putting the keys where they belong.

TeacupDrama · 27/08/2022 14:34

new metal drying rack for dishes the plastic drainer was such a pain to clean

Waitingforever123 · 27/08/2022 14:35

A metal mop bucket, the kids kept breaking the plastic ones. It cost more to buy but I've probably saved a fortune as haven't had to buy a new one.

Brilliant

A little tea bag plate so they weren’t just left on the side.

Times10 · 27/08/2022 14:36

Kanaloa that’s one of the first things I bought when we moved here, as we were always losing our keys. DH still forgets to hang his up, but at least I know where mine are!

Hooks and roller clips to hang things like dustpan and brush, mops, brooms etc. yet keeps them easily to hand and tidy. A large wicker basket for umbrellas, walking sticks, bits of hoover etc. (dunelem £10)

mathanxiety · 27/08/2022 14:37

Plastic baskets with straight up and down sides to corral spices and dried herbs and oodles of other items I use for baking and cooking. I keep them on the shelves of my kitchen cupboards. When I need the jar of nutmeg I pull out the baking spice basket. When I need the Colman's mustard I pull out another basket. No more finding the step stool and rummaging and knocking stuff onto the counter.

LastPass for passwords.
It links up your phones and computers with all your passwords and you can share passwords with spouse. I never have to remember passwords!

Lindam by Munchkin Baby Proofing Xtra Guard Latch with Dual Function. Cupboard locks for children, suitable for cabinets, draws, appliances and more. No tools needed. 1 Pack amzn.eu/d/cqdMC3v

This. Keeps the bloody dog out of the bin. Best money ever spent.

purplewolfie · 27/08/2022 14:39

reusable food covers, bag clips and organisers for the cutlery/utensil drawers.

MoistBandana · 27/08/2022 14:40

I bought from Amazon a pack of 2 big silicone disk thingies.
They go in the bath over the plug hole.

The reason I got them is because the bath plug is a modern plug made of metal with a small rubber ring around it and every time I put it in the bath, had my bath and pulled it... The connecter piece bent and came off meaning I had to spend longer fiddling with a wedged in plug than I spent washing my arse.

The silicone disk thingies have been revolutionary. Soon as I'm done in the bath, slide it to the side, water drains. I leave the plug on the side and make it watch as I choose to not use it.. little bastard. 😜

Decent sticky metal hooks which stick into inside of doors. Use for kitchen tea towels on inside of cupboard, wardrobe inner door for dressing gown etc and utility room

Times10 · 27/08/2022 14:41

pastypirate we bought magnetic child locks for the kitchen cupboards, best thing ever. The kids figured out the traditional type really quickly when they were toddlers, but the magnetic ones have been great.

Another one saying hooks.

I am a hook fanatic- I have them in every room in the house. I find them way more useful than shelves. Okay, not for books!

Link? I'm moving so not sure what else I will need to dog proof 😂

A teabag bin from teabagbin.co.uk - this is the best one I have had.

Tiny little castors which stick underneath the breadbin and other items on the worktop, so I can move them around the worktop and not scratch it - they were so cheap and called Set of 16 Pcs Small Castor Wheels on Amazon

Foldable laundry baskets

CorvusPurpureus · 27/08/2022 14:45

8 slide in plastic trays which go on 2 shelves in the fridge.

Now I can quickly see what veg needs using up (fridge soup/frozen veg purees to stealth into pasta etc time!) & if there's been a run of eggs (teenage hangover breakfast).

Took us years to get one 😂 and it makes such a huge difference! Little things to make your day easier to get through for me.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/08/2022 14:47

A pretty little bowl to put my watch and rings in.
A pretty little pot to keep a (nice) pen in and a tiny notebook.
Both of the above live on a little side table next to my chair, alongside a glasses holder that my reading glasses live on (yes, I'm officially old).

Agree with the PP re a pot to put teabags in.

Shopping bags that fold up very small, so I can always stick one in even the smallest handbag.

Can you link to these, please?
