Having a movie night this weekend, and looking for ideas for a film to watch with good scares? I’m a horror fan so have seen most of the mainstream stuff. Examples of films that I have really enjoyed are like:
⁃ The Others
⁃ The Conjuring (I’ve also seen the films in the conjuring universe and by James Wan)
⁃ The Skeleton Key
⁃ The Grudge
⁃ The Strangers
⁃ Silence of the Lambs
⁃ Get Out

I find it hard to describe the type of horror/thriller I’m into, but I’ll try. I need proper jumps to enjoy a film, I thought films like The Witch and Hereditary were boring. I’m also not into the ‘classic’ horror movies like Hitchcock. Basically I don’t need a film to be thought-provoking or a discussion on current affairs, I just like cheap thrills, but with a decent storyline.

Streaming films I’ve enjoyed over the recent years are
⁃ The Visit
⁃ The Ritual
⁃ He's Out There
⁃ Hellhouse LLC
⁃ Marianne (actually a series but REALLY good)
⁃ The House on Pine Street
⁃ The Taking
⁃ Alone

I’m not into gore, aliens, vampires or werewolves. More supernatural or scary person type of things.

Common themes I seem to enjoy are
⁃ stories set in the woods (but not Cabin in the Woods, really disliked that)
⁃ Stories set in remote houses that are either terrorised by ghosts/random strangers
⁃ Psychological thrillers

If you’re into these kinds of films too, please can you recommend one that you enjoyed? Thanks!

Have you seen Hush? I watched it randomly a few years ago when it was on telly and it’s about a writer who is deaf, who is assailed in her remote home in the woods. Sounds like it might fit your criteria!

Kanaloa · 27/08/2022 17:20

Oh I also thought Orphan was quite decent, despite having possibly the most irritating parents in any horror film ever.

Afterfire · 27/08/2022 17:25

We watched Men last night with Jessie Buckley in it. That was all kinds of creepy and weird. And psychological. I still don’t really know what to think about it! Enjoyed it though.

ConsuelaHammock · 27/08/2022 17:25

The descent movies are jumpy

YellowPlumbob · 27/08/2022 17:36

Blumhouse movies.

Sinister is on Netflix - Ethan Hawke is amazing in it, the second one is decent and has the actor who plays Eddie in IT 2 (forget his name!)

junglejane66 · 27/08/2022 17:49

The uninvited 1944, old but quite spooky

Miacarla · 27/08/2022 17:54

Hell House LLC has 2 brilliant sequels! I loved Willow Creek, The Lost Coast Tapes, Area 51 (about the kids that break in - terrifying), Z Wants to Play, The Conspiracy, The Endless & Resolution, The Banishing, Due Date and The Houses October Built. Shudder is brilliant!

bogoblin · 27/08/2022 17:55

Hereditary!

bogoblin · 27/08/2022 17:55

Sorry, I just saw that you thought it was boring!

Hotandbothereds · 27/08/2022 17:56

Not a film but there’s a horror series called Red Rose on iplayer that’s pretty good.

bogoblin · 27/08/2022 17:56

In that case, As Above, So Below. The Boy.

The Descent scared the shit out of me 😂

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 27/08/2022 18:13

I was going to say the descent. Both of them. The conjuring series films are so good.

Sodie · 27/08/2022 18:18

Ah yes I like Blumhouse films! Have you seen Black Phone? It's Dark.

I haven't seen Descent so will look it up! Thanks

AquaTorfanaa · 27/08/2022 20:57

Midsommar

It follows

Onlyahalfbottle · 27/08/2022 21:12

Yes to The Descent and As Above So Below, also The Borderlands which I think is on iPlayer, quite low key but very unsettling.

toetoiseshellclub · 27/08/2022 21:15

Amityville horror (spelt wrong) scared the absolute crap outta me as a teenager!
