First period - where to get period pants?

wheredidIleavemystyle · 27/08/2022 01:45

DD had her first period while she was visiting her gran.

She waited to get home to tell me, she was really proud about it!

I've agreed to take her shopping tomorrow so we can put together a bag so she can be prepared next time. I was hoping to get her period knickers from Primark but they seem to have stopped doing them, can anyone confirm?

And I looked on the M&S site but I could only find adult ones.

Will we have to get them online or are there any places that do them in-store? She's only 9 but wears size 11-12 clothes.

We're going for cake after shopping, I want to spoil her a bit.

I think a lot of supermarkets sell them now. Might be best to try a couple of makes to see which she prefers.

PicketRingFenced · 27/08/2022 02:08

I bought some from Amazon which were absolutely fine but DD has gone back to using tampons and pads. She uses the period pants occasionally at night to prevent leakage

wheredidIleavemystyle · 27/08/2022 02:12

Supermarkets, of course, thanks. I'll see if I can find out if our local one has them before I go.

I doubt she'll want tampons so young. I started at 10 but used pads for a couple of years at least.

Victoria secrets pink had them on sale for £5 each

wheredidIleavemystyle · 27/08/2022 06:37

I'll get her some pads too.

She's got Milli Hill's "My Period" book, which I highly recommend - it's what has made her so proud to have started her period, I'm sure of it.

That's great that she's embracing it.

Can I ask: is that book biologically based or full of gender woo? I'm looking for a period book that makes it clear that females and only females bleed in this way. It's a rite of passage for girls.

AperolWhore · 27/08/2022 06:44

The M&S ones are fab and come in multipacks with bright pattens on x

wingingit33 · 27/08/2022 06:44

The supermarket ones aren't nearly as good as the modibodi ones. Yes they're expensive but they lazy and they're brilliant. Bless your dd at 9. My daughter started at 10y8m but she too took it in her stride and the modibodi have made it really manageable. They last all day and night and no pads needed alongside.

wingingit33 · 27/08/2022 06:45

*lazy!? Amazing

wheredidIleavemystyle · 27/08/2022 06:50

Just looking at the supermarkets and they don't seem to do period pants in kids sizes.

I think I need to give up on the idea of finding them on the high street.

So, two questions I guess...

Can anyone recommend somewhere to get them online?

But also, DD and I have agreed to go shopping today to make a period bag, she's looking forward to it. I want to do it to mark her starting her period and to roll with the positivity she feels about it right now. What else would you put in a period bag?

We can buy a small bag, pads - what else would you put in it?

I doubt she'll get period pains yet, it looks like she's following my pattern - starting very young and very light (the horrendous pain came a few years later 😥)

Modibodi they have a teen section called Red. Around £20 a pair but they do bundle packs and you save 10% anyway as a newcomer.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/08/2022 06:59

DD(10) had her first period last week.
On the day, we went and got done "Love Luna" ones that I'd seen locally. They were OK.

Went to a shopping centre the following day - Primark had none, M&S only had adult sizes. We ended up ordering a Modi Bodi bundle online - really good quality, nice fit, very confidence boosting.

wheredidIleavemystyle · 27/08/2022 07:00

£20 a pair, wow that's more than I expected! (I bought a three pack for myself from M&S recently and I'm sure it was about £20 for three!)

Happy to spend a bit extra on DD if it's worth it, though. Are they worth the extra money for some reason?

OP posts:
wheredidIleavemystyle · 27/08/2022 07:09

Wow, the bundles are over £100!! Shock

I see the modibodi ones come in red, black or a range of coloured designs (mostly blue). Black and bright red aren't really DD's style and the other ones are pretty much all sold out in her size.

I bought these from amazon as an emergency purchase when dd with sensory issues couldn't tolerate pads (although will now tollerate on really heavy days). She's also very underweight but fit has been great (I ended up buying an extra pack).

Dd has a make up bag in her school bag which contains some baby wipes, spare pads and pants, nappy sacks.
Also found having a basic period tracker on her phone helps her be independent and plan when best to pop the period knickers on/ mentally prepare.

Ok, Victoria's secret has a nice range of colours but trying to make sense of their sizing...

What women's clothes size is age 11 girls' clothes? Is it a 6 maybe? Or a 4?

We have this book ready for when DD starts and it’s great. Definitely biology based and no gender woo. I follow the author on twitter and she has had a lot of abuse for this and stating biological facts.

wheredidIleavemystyle · 27/08/2022 07:22

Victoria's secret sizing guide. It'd be handy if they put relevant kids age sizes on it not just adult women sizes!

Trying to work out which one is age 10-11 or 11-12...

The Period Lady has some cute blue and pink pairs on sale that come in 11-12.

statetrooperstacey · 27/08/2022 07:24

I got these for my dd, she was also 9 but in about age 13 size.
still have to wear pads with them ( we get the ones with wings) but they have a waterproof layer to prevent leaks and the gusset bit is much wider than normal pants so keeps them in place and comfortable . They also look exactly like normal pants . She was really pleased with the them as she struggled with normal pantsI as too small for pads really, bought 3 sets of 3 and they are still going strong 2 years later, wash really well, can’t recommend them enough.

Absolutely zero gender woo!

It's a brilliant book. Milli Hill is a feminist. The actual real feminist kind! Her book isn't just about periods it's about your whole cycle. Genuinely empowering.

The language and tone is pitched just right for pre-teens, and it really has helped DD feel positive about starting her period. I highly recommend it.

Uniqlo has some period pants not sure about the sizes.

Wow. I am a 40 year old woman and I never knew these things existed.....🤯

wheredidIleavemystyle · 27/08/2022 07:35

First three pages of "My Period".

The tone was just right for my DD. We first read it together a few months ago as I knew she was likely to start young as I did, and her body was starting to change shape.

And when she told me she'd started her period at her gran's, she went and found the book herself and she's started re-reading it.

Milli Hill is biologically based and fab. She was really targeted by TRAs who tried to cancel her for not following the gender woo crap.
