'I don’t know-British people just lie down and take it- The French don’t.'

Tbf we had protest after protest in 2020/21 when people weren't supposed to be out in large groups but now we're opened up the protest mentality has strangely gone quiet, except for the odd extinction rebellion glueing themselves to things events.

I'm amazed people aren't marching in London to push government to announce a plan.

@NC4TPost How is your water heated? Is it an immersion switch next to a hot water tank?

@NC4TPost We use about 2500kwh of electricity in a year in a dampish sprawling bungalow with two adults and two kids, with one adult often at home during winter. That was using the tumble drier too (won’t be doing that this year!). So yours seems very very high.

This guy is a professional in the industry and explains where energy prices come from really well, why the system is causing this.

@LittleLlama

Jesus. How unaware can one person be?

some people here are living on not much more than £6000, you getting that as an increase in April and having savings you can use in the meantime, might be frustrating, but it's not fucking scary!!

Firstly, it isn’t a race to the bottom.

Secondly, yes we are lucky that my husband is 60 in April and is able to get his £6k pension and that we have savings - but I am still finding the price increase on power quite scary. You can’t tell me how I should feel.

Thirdly, I am very aware that this price increase will have a devastating impact on many families. My heart goes out to them.

Finally, Arguing with each other is not helpful. We should be angry with those responsible.

Hugasauras · 26/08/2022 12:01

My guess would be that the hot water is being heated by immersion which is always on instead of being timed for an hour or so per day.

FatOaf · 26/08/2022 12:01

I think I might just die.

Rees-Mogg, Baker, Javid, Kwarteng and all the other ultra-right maniacs - as well as their puppet, Truss - will be very grateful if you and several million others do, as long as you do it at home and don't put any strain on the NHS.

Yes but I can't get access to the switch to turn it on or off (it's always on). It's also very old fashioned if that makes a difference.

Hugasauras · 26/08/2022 12:03

That'll probably be why then Sad is there no timer anywhere to set it to come on and off? It'll be using heaps of electricity if it's always on.

MenopauseSucks · 26/08/2022 12:04

My fix with EDF ended 31/05/22.
At that point for gas, I was paying 3p/KwH.

I can't remember what the electricity prices were so talking about just my gas bill!

The SVR took it up to 7p/KwH.

EDF offered me a fix of 10p/KwH for 2yrs with £300 exit fee.
I'm kicking myself that I didn't take it...

Could we not all just club together and pay an assassin to take Putin out?

I’m up for that! I’m sure we could find ex SAS to do the job.

I know. It's almost as if they want us to die! Well somebody is being sadistic somewhere. Whether that's Putin or Biden or some secret sect or Boris or Truss or Bill Gates or the devil himself I don't know, but people WILL DIE WITHOUT A DOUBT. People will not be able to pay rent so they'll be evicted in which case energy bills won't worry them. I don't fuckin know how we're going to withstand this?

Is there anyone TENACIOUS with excellent motivational skills and organisational skills who can actually organise an ALL OUT DISRUPTION? Marching and protesting isn't going to fuckin work. Can absolutely everyone in the UK take a DAY of work, absolutely everyone?

Hugasauras · 26/08/2022 12:07

@NC4TPost When you say you can't get access, so you mean you just can't reach? Do you have a gas boiler? It sounds like your heating is gas - could it also control your hot water?

If you or someone else can get access to the immersion switch somehow to turn it off then you can see if your boiler is also heating the hot water and thus the immersion isn't needed. Our boiler heats the hot water but we have a backup immersion switch in case the boiler fails so we still have hot water.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 26/08/2022 12:08

I just did my calculation and even with the grants for low income and disabled people along with the £400 I’m screwed. I’m going to have to chose between heating and feeding my children. What happens if I can’t pay?

There is a timer but I have been through the manual, and had two (separate) people come and look at it (they came for different reasons but I asked them to look as the issue they were called out for was related) and they both said it's so old they couldn't make heads or tails of the timer and didn't know how to set it or do anything with it, and neither do I.

Would it be against the law/my tenancy if I broke into where the switch is covered and switched it on and off when I need to? I don't really need hot water apart from a shower and if I need to wash up I could just boil the kettle. I would be happy to replace the cost of the covering afterwards but I'm scared I will be thrown out onto the streets and be homeless again if my landlord found out.

This was proposed a few weeks ago but there wasn't much appetite for WW3. If we're all going to freeze to death anyway, WW3 doesn't seem like a bad option.

Nat6999 · 26/08/2022 12:09

I'm going to be in fuel poverty from October, I only have £94 a month spare after paying everything before this increase, I'm disabled, housebound, suffer from conditions that need me to be warm or symptoms & pain increase. The only thing I will be able to do is stay in bed for more of the day once winter comes so what little life I have will be severely curtailed.

Oldcottoneye · 26/08/2022 12:11

I expect people who were formerly vehemently opposed to dropping in unannounced to their neighbours/inlaws, will suddenly decide that it's the best idea in the world 😂

I'm not really sure. Sorry, but this is my first property I've lived in by myself.

Basically the switch is covered by some kind of plastic coating thing and also has tape around it. I can access it, but it's designed (or modified) in a way that I'm not supposed to IYSWIM?

There's two tanks one on top of the other next to the covered switch, the bottom one is hot, the top one is cold. If I have a shower or run hot water the boilers make noise, so I'm guessing yes? Tbh I feel sick from this bill and just have a mind to break into it and switch it off.

Imnotswallowingthat · 26/08/2022 12:12

Just had an email off Scottish Power saying they will advise the new DD amount by end of September.

Also confirms that the £400 rebate will be paid in 2 x £66 in October & November and 4 x £67 from Dec to March.

However, rather than coming off the bill it seems the process is that they will still take the full DD amount and once that is cleared they will refund you the £66/£67 back into your bank account a few days later. Which is fine but it means people will still need to budget for the full DD going out initially.

RincewindsHat · 26/08/2022 12:12

I've worked out my estimated monthly energy costs based on the new price cap and my typical monthly usage (averaged out over the last 3 years of data that I downloaded & manually entered into a spreadsheet) and my average monthly bill will more than triple based on those new cap rates.

I currently pay £60pcm on a fixed rate which is ending end of Sept, and those new rates will mean if I use at the same rate as the previous 3 years, my average monthly bill will now be £192.52 and my highest energy usage month in Jan will cost me £306.27.

Not entirely sure where that money will come from, but I predict I will have the heating on less, have a lot fewer baths this year and will be wearing a lot more layers...

The only thing that's confusing me is if the water was heated up by gas wouldn't the gas bill be really, really high? My gas works out around at just over £20 per month (£67 quarterly). Sorry, I'll stop asking questions as you said it's probably easier to take a photo when I'm home!
