From £1971 to £3549. 80% rise. I have no words.

Daily standing charge: £0.46

Gas:
£0.15 per kWh
Daily standing charge: £0.28

If we burn Fabricant's merkin we could probably generate a good few days' heat ffrom that.

SleeplessInEngland · 26/08/2022 12:14

"Cap" is such a misnomer. It's just a massive price hike.

Thelnebriati · 26/08/2022 12:15

Don't forget to check the Petitions and Activism board; there's currently a petition to remove VAT from household fuel.

Martin Lewis is on Radio 2 now and he sounds like a man on the edge. Of course he's frustrated - he's been warning people about this for six months and has no tools left to help people manage their finances

JOFFCV · 26/08/2022 12:16

Nat6999 · 26/08/2022 12:09

I'm going to be in fuel poverty from October, I only have £94 a month spare after paying everything before this increase, I'm disabled, housebound, suffer from conditions that need me to be warm or symptoms & pain increase. The only thing I will be able to do is stay in bed for more of the day once winter comes so what little life I have will be severely curtailed.

I have no advice but I'm so sorry you are facing this.

So many people are going to suffer.

Yabado · 26/08/2022 12:17

According to Martin Lewis calculator
I spend roughly right now 1200 year
with the rise I will be paying 1940 if I stick to the same usage

So roughly £160 a month up from £100 a month so the 67 should roughly cover it
I’m on pre pay with EDF and my rates were high as I had E7 so the rise doesn’t seem that much to me as I was already on an expensive rate of 35kw

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 26/08/2022 11:18

@RudsyFarmer Jesus wept. Brilliant idea. NOT!!

let's drag the elderly out of their homes, mid winter, encounter fall risks, freezing weather, to sit them in a 'communal warm space' probably charge them fir fiid & drinks, then have them go home (in all weathers) to a freezing cold, dark house'

you really can't see why that's a SHIT idea??

So a local communal space where people have the option to congregate in the warm without judgement and potentially with the option of a warm drink/food is a SHIT idea? Wow.

JOFFCV · 26/08/2022 10:07

What happens if you know for a fact your usage will be quite a lot less than last year? Will you be able to lower your DD when they up it?

If you'd asked me a couple of years ago, I would definitely have said yes (negotiated exactly that on behalf of clients, many times).

I think they'd be mad not to, tbh. And if they don't agree, you can just cancel your DD, put the money aside in a separate account, and pay the bills as they come in.

Hugasauras · 26/08/2022 12:18

@NC4TPost If it's a combi boiler and you're only having a short shower a day or something then it won't be massively expensive in the summer months. If you aren't using the heating at all then something is using the gas currently, so it could well be the hot water. But yes post pics in a separate thread later and someone who knows more than me will get to the bottom of it I'm sure!

JOFFCV · 26/08/2022 12:19

We have been careless in the past and I'm trying to think of every way to reduce our usage as we are already paying more than other people.

DH head was stuck in the sand but he is finally realising.

This will be my plan, thank you.

herecomesthsun · 26/08/2022 12:21

I have a vision of heated library pods with a central heated area and pods around the outside, like flower petals, where people can go to be warm.

Oldcottoneye · 26/08/2022 12:21

I don't want to be a prophet of doom, but we've had an extraordinarily hot summer and when we have those, we typically have an extraordinarily cold winter!

RudsyFarmer · 26/08/2022 12:22

Also didn’t Martin Lewis sell off MSE for around one hundred million pounds? Im not sure he is quite the man of the people that everyone hails him to be.

Elderly people gathering together for hours on end in a communal space perhaps isn't the best idea ATM. Covid is still circulating at high rates and seasonal flu is predicted to be a real issue this Winter.

That's irrelevant. He could have quietly gone away and enjoyed his millions, a large portion of which he has donated to charity BTW - at least £20M so far, instead of campaigning tirelessly like he is now.

RudsyFarmer · 26/08/2022 12:25

I purposely didn’t say older people. I said people if you look at my post. Communal warm spaces should be available for those people who can’t afford to heat their him in the day and want to go somewhere and warm up. I’m not suggesting that should be the extent of the measures, I’m saying that warm spaces in the winter and cold spaces in the summer should be offered to people as summers are also going to be a huge problem in the future.

That’s called guilt. He looks a broken man now.

Yabado · 26/08/2022 12:26

@NC4TPost
4262.37KWH is well above the average use
put it this way I have a 2 bed /2 bath house 3 adults
expensive pre pay and use 2700 kw a year and my SC is 56p
35kw

do you have an emersion heater for hot water
as that is often the culprit for high electric bills
if you do that’s the reason for high usage
you can put it on a timer and set it so it switches on for only few hours a day

RudsyFarmer · 26/08/2022 12:26

Abd donating to charity is a well know tax dodge. All the rich do it.

Aishah231 · 26/08/2022 08:02

If the poor energy companies have to raise these rates due to the cost of fuel/war in Russia ( which I don't buy given how much profit they've been making) how do they justify raising the standing charge - that's not about usage. The fact the standing charge has gone up so much means even if we cut right back on usage we're still paying loads more per month.

The increase in the standing charge is to cover the cost of rescuing Bulb and moving customers from failed energy companies. Its the Tory way- privatise profits and socialise losses

Oldcottoneye · 26/08/2022 12:27

Thanks to the poster who mentioned Radio 2. I never listen to the radio. Just caught ML at the end of his discussion.

Yabado · 26/08/2022 12:28

@NC4TPost
also pop over to energy and support advice on Facebook
they are absolutely brilliant and will be able to give you ideas as to why your electric is so high

Hugasauras · 26/08/2022 12:29

Confused What has Martin Lewis got to be guilty about? His advice and website has saved hundreds of thousands of people a lot of money. He continually lobbies and puts pressure on the government, he helped to fund a free finance textbook for school pupils to learn money management, he's very active answering questions from people on social media.

I must have missed the bit where he is responsible for the war in Ukraine and the bad decisions made by our government for the last X years.

Hear hear!

He's far from the enemy in this game.
